From reading this article, I learned many of the benefits of having consistent exercise habits. For example, the article states that exercise is an excellent way to improve your mental health. Exercise removes the anxiety and stress felt throughout our daily lives. Furthermore, the article states that exercise can even have a great impact on depression than some anti-depressant medications. From reading the article, I also learned the impact exercise can have on your emotional wellbeing. The article best states this statement by saying, “If you’re emotionally balanced, it helps keep you that way. If you’re not, it helps you get that way.” I agree with this statement because of the fact that I can relate to exercise relieving my stress after I finished exercising. Therefore, with physical and mental benefits, it can benefit me greatly to continue exercising for the remainder of my life.
After reading this article, I found it concerning about the statistics of overweight children in the US. According to Lynne Hall, a school nurse, almost 40% of students at her school can be categorized as overweight. These overweight children are developing diseases such as diabetes that are most typically developed during adulthood as a result. However, Mrs. Hall has come up with an innovative plan to tackle obesity, calling it the 5-2-1 plan. The plan includes at least 5 portions of vegetables, 2 hours or less of screen time (computer, video games, TV, etc.) and at least 1 hour of play each day. I think more plans like this should be implemented at school because growing up, students do spend the majority of there lives at school. Therefore, I think schools should implement or come up with healthy living plans for their students and provide nutritious, and well-portioned meals at lunchtime.
After reading this article, I came to better understand why people find it difficult to eat healthier. It is a fact that unhealthy foods such as fast food meals and grab-and-go snacks are much more cheaper and convenient than healthy foods that you would have to buy at a grocery store. For people who work for minimum or low wages, they simply cannot afford to eat healthier more frequently than someone who earns a higher salary. According to the article, it would cost a family of four an average of close to $1,000 a month if they chose to buy healthier foods. However, the article also states that for a person earning low or minimum wage, almost 40% of his or her income would have to be spent towards healthy foods if he or she chose to eat more healthier. Therefore, there are many criterias that go into healthy living other than lifestyle choices and will power.
