Students learn about warmth, sunlight, water and soil - the things that are needed in order for plants to grow.

Basics of agriculture including where most foods come from, how plants are grown, and the process farm products undergo prior to being sold in shops are all explained.

Karen Willis's curator insight, May 25, 2014 7:57 PM

Suitable for the early years ABC Splash offers a great clip to enable early years students to consider where our food comes from and how it reaches our table! Students can consider how we farm for a purpose and explore the life cycle of farming animals to make food for our dinner tables.

Through the site From Paddock to Plate a series of topics are available which explore growing crops,  farming animals, harvesting and processing and food production. There is an abundance of information, resources, clips and lesson ideas which can be utilised to teach students about farming practices and the processes involved to produce familiar products.

Karen says that this site is suitable for early years, however it could also be utilised for students with special needs in upper age levels.

The steps followed in order for food to arrive at our table are considered and students learn the process and purpose by exploring the life cycle of farming animals.

Topics such as growing crops, farming animals, harvesting and processing, and food production are all covered. Karen explains that there is an abundance of information available from the site.

Using quality and concise videos from the "For the Juniors" series, this series links well into the Australian Curriculum areas of Stage 2 Design and Technology (ACTDEK012) - Food and fibre production; Suitability of materials and systems (ACTDEK013); and NSW HSIE Syllabus Stage 2 unit "Who will buy?"
