Medicine in a Bowl: 52 Clove Garlic Defeats Colds and Flus ("time for grandma's garlic soup")

Medicine in a Bowl: 52 Clove Garlic Defeats Colds and Flus ("time for grandma's garlic soup") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Preserve your health, fortify your internal defenses, and eradicate seasonal illness with warming spices and foods like a 52 clove garlic soup.

The Greeks, Egyptians and Romans effectively used garlic to treat a host of ailments including infections, digestive problems, and high blood pressure. Many Italians even used to send their children to school with garlands of garlic around their necks to prevent colds.

Many of the health benefits of garlic are due to an active compound known as allicin. Allicin is the compound in garlic that gives it its pungent odor as well as its powerful health benefits.  A mere one milligram of allicin is nearly 15x as potent as penicillin. The compound offers a broad spectrum of protection against pathogenic bacteria, viruses, parasites, antibiotic resistant MRSA, yeast infections, and is even one of many amazing cancer-fighting foods.

Savvy health experts increasingly promote eating whole foods as a foundational healing method as opposed to taking supplements, especially when it comes to garlic. Eating garlic is by far the best way to ensure garlic’s numerous health benefits.

Most consider the proper way to eat garlic for health purposes is to first smash a whole fresh clove with a garlic press, or chop it, or smash it with the back of a knife. Then wait about 5 minutes before consuming.

Magnesium is a Powerful Natural Anti-Inflammatory Mineral (inflammation leads to a host of illnesses")

Magnesium is a Powerful Natural Anti-Inflammatory Mineral (inflammation leads to a host of illnesses") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
A study involving more than 3,700 postmenopausal women found that magnesium can have a dramatic impact on inflammation throughout the body.

While the study provides good news in the fight against inflammation, we cannot reap the benefits of magnesium without consuming the mineral. And the modern diet is replete of it.

When you consume a steady diet of processed foods, you aren’t getting much of anything in the way of nutritional value; and this includes magnesium. But, rather than running out to get a magnesium supplement to take with your value meal tonight, try including some magnesium–rich foods in your diet. These foods include:

Dried herbs including coriander, mint, dill, chives, sage, and basilDark chocolatePumpkin seedsFlax seedsBrazil nutsSunflower seedsAlmondsCashewsMolasses

These magnesium-rich foods would make a great homemade trail mix and can help you fight chronic disease while you nosh.

Bert Guevara's insight:

The management of inflammation in the body is a key component in natural healthy living. The first thing we can remove is the consumption of processed foods and replace this with real foods.

"Inflammation in the walls of the arteries can lead to cardiovascular disease. Inflammation throughout the body can lead to a host of additional diseases including the obvious inflammatory ones like arthritis, but could also be the cause of things like Alzheimer’s. Many natural health experts subscribe to the belief that inflammation is actually at the heart of all disease."

It's Your Turn: Join A Global Alliance to Save the Non-GMO Seed ("why not start your guerilla garden")

It's Your Turn: Join A Global Alliance to Save the Non-GMO Seed ("why not start your guerilla garden") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Do you grow your own food? It is time to Join millions who want to save seeds, support sustainable agriculture, and fuel the natural beauty that is nature.

Never has planting an organic garden been such an act of defiance against corruption. This September 20th and October 20th, you can join millions of other political ‘rebels’ and support a caravan for heirloom, non-GMO seed sovereignty. The event is hosted by Seed Freedom, and it aims to join millions who want to save seeds, support sustainable agriculture and planting practices, and support the ‘millions of years of biological and cultural evolution’ that unfolds in the potential of a single seed.

Dr. Vandana Shiva’s Declaration on Seed Freedom points out the right of farmers to live without debt, to save, exchange, evolve, breed, or sell seed as an inherent right and part of seed freedom.

Since seeds are the very first link in the food chain, it is absolutely imperative that people everywhere stand up to corporate interests who would control the entire cycle of life. Patented, biotech seeds have no place in our modern agricultural landscape. By creating community heirloom seed saving resources and seed libraries, Seed Freedom is hoping to refute the illegitimacy of actions which make seeds the private property of corporations.

What actions can you take?

You can sign the declaration and commit to saving heirloom seed, and share it with your friends. You can download a PDF of the Seed Declaration to share it at community farmer’s markets, seed swaps, gardener’s meet-ups, and other places that you know people care about supporting food sovereignty. You can start your own seed bank. You can guerrilla garden or start a ‘seed-bombing’ event in your community.
Bert Guevara's insight:

Key word for today: SEED FREEDOM. Read and find out why this freedom is threatened.

WHO fact sheet on healthy diet with key facts and information on essential dietary elements, practical advice, salt, sodium and potassium, sugars, health diet promotion, WHO response.

The "WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health" was adopted in 2004 by the World Health Assembly (WHA). It calls on governments, WHO, international partners, the private sector and civil society to take action at global, regional and local levels to support healthy diets and physical activity.

In 2010, the WHA endorsed a set of recommendations on the marketing of foods and non-alcoholic beverages to children. These guide countries in designing new policies and improving existing ones to reduce the impact on children of the marketing of unhealthy food. WHO is also helping to develop a nutrient profile model that countries can use as a tool to implement the marketing recommendations.

In 2012, the WHA adopted a Comprehensive implementation plan on maternal, infant and young child nutrition and 6 global nutrition targets, including the reduction of stunting, wasting and overweight in children, the improvement of breastfeeding and the reduction of anaemia and low birth weight.

In 2013, the WHA agreed to 9 global voluntary targets for the prevention and control of NCDs, which include a halt to the rise in diabetes and obesity and a 30% relative reduction in the intake of salt by 2025. The "Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases 2013-2020" provides guidance and policy options for Member States, WHO and other UN agencies to achieve the targets.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Check out these useful health guidelines from the WHO. They can confirm or correct your current health tips.

"Consuming a healthy diet throughout the life-course helps prevent malnutrition in all its forms as well as a range of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and conditions. But increasing production of processed food, rapid urbanization and changing lifestyles have led to a shift in dietary patterns. People are consuming more foods high in energy, saturated fats, trans fats, free sugars or salt/sodium, and many do not eat enough fruit, vegetables and dietary fibre such as whole grains."

Preventing Macular Degeneration, Vision Loss with Spinach ("popeye's 1 eye must be 20-20 with spinach")

Preventing Macular Degeneration, Vision Loss with Spinach ("popeye's 1 eye must be 20-20 with spinach") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Scientists are suggesting that eating spinach could protect your eyes from the changes that cause macular degeneration, thereby preventing the disease.

As the population ages, the prevalence of this disorder is going to grow and with that, treatment and prevention methods need to keep pace. In an effort to stay ahead of the curve, scientists are suggesting that including spinach in your diet could protect your eyes from the changes that cause macular degeneration.

The disorder is caused by a “progressive deterioration of a region that nourishes the retina, known as the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE).” This deterioration causes the retina itself to deteriorate and leads to difficulty focuses and, in the worst cases, blindness. Keeping the RPE healthy, therefore, can reduce the risk of macular degeneration. This is where spinach comes in.

Spinach contains lutein – a compound that combines with zeaxanthin within the body to create a  macular pigment—an oily, yellow substance that coats the retina. This pigment nourishes the retina and prevents deterioration common in macular degeneration.

Lutein also protects the eyes from free radical damage by helping filter out damaging blue light and ultraviolet light.

Spinach contains plentiful antioxidants and the ingredients needed to create macular pigment. Research is underway to draw causation between foods rich in these pigments and reduced risk. While connections have been made, actual causation has yet to be verified.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Take a cue from Popeye on how to get healthy eyes.

Ginger Root Kills Ovarian & Prostate Cancer Cells ("cancer cell suicide or cells attack one another")

Ginger Root Kills Ovarian & Prostate Cancer Cells ("cancer cell suicide or cells attack one another") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
We can now utilize ginger root to not only kill ovarian and prostate cancer, but also keep cells from building a resistance to conventional treatments.

Truly among the great medicines of the world, ginger has long been used to treat inflammation and nausea, but the results presented in a session at the American Association for Cancer Research show that in every single instance where ginger powder was used to treat cancer cells, they all died as a result of being exposed to the compound. In medical lingo this is called apoptosis (cancer cell suicide.) When ginger is present, the cells even attack one another, called autophagy.

“Ginger inhibits growth and modulates secretion of angiogenic factors in ovarian cancer cells. The use of dietary agents such as ginger may have potential in the treatment and prevention of ovarian cancer.”

Ginger has also been proven to treat prostate cancer. The British Journal of Nutrition published the results of an American study recently in which ginger extract (zingiber officinale) killed human prostate cancer cells while healthy prostate cells were left alone. Whole ginger extract was revealed to shrink prostate tumor size by a whopping 56%.

Further adding to the benefits of ginger, the spice has no toxicity when consumed even in high doses, and does not cause people to endure the very uncomfortable side effects of chemo and radiation treatments. The American Cancer Society admits  that more than 15% of men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 20,000 American women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year. Many of these cases can be helped with ginger root.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Are you worried about prostate and ovarian cancer? Here is the natural remedy.

How to Avoid Genetically Modified Food ("be an informed consumer; know downside of buying commercial")

How to Avoid Genetically Modified Food ("be an informed consumer; know downside of buying commercial") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
The average supermarket is full of genetically modified foods. Here’s how you can avoid those products.

The only way to avoid GM food is to know which ingredients are likely to be genetically modified and read labels carefully, or to always choose organic foods, which are certified GM-free.

Below are estimates of the percentages of GM foods found on store shelves. To learn more about this issue, see The Threats From Genetically Modified Foods.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Dairy/Eggs. Unless it’s labeled organic or rBST-free, everything in the dairy case, including milk, cheese and yogurt, probably contains milk from cows injected with rBST, a GM hormone used to make cows give more milk. It’s also likely that the cows and chickens were fed GM corn, soy and canola.

Meat. GM corn and soy are so dominant in the United States that almost everything in the meat case comes from animals fed GM crops.

Fresh Produce. Not many GM items yet, but GM sweet corn arrived in 2012.

Cereals. Unless labeled as organic, cereals probably include GM ingredients, primarily high-fructose corn syrup and other corn products, soy and milk proteins. Don’t be fooled by “natural” labels; they mean nothing.

Cookies/Snacks/Chips. Almost all include high-fructose corn syrup; soy, corn or canola oil; soy lecithin and other soy isolates; or other additives derived from GM corn and soy.

Pasta/Rice/Beans. You’re pretty safe here, because wheat, rice and beans are not (yet) genetically modified, but watch out for the heat-and-eat pasta meals that include GM ingredients.

Ice Cream/Frozen Prepared Meals. Unless labeled organic, these are virtually guaranteed to have GM ingredients, including corn and soy products, whey protein from rBST milk, and GM beet sugar.

Oils/Fats/Shortening. Olive oil is non-GM. “Vegetable oil” usually is GM, as are corn, soybean and canola oil. Solid shortenings are hydrogenated canola, corn and soybean oil.

Condiments/Prepared Foods. All of these items contain GM soy, corn and/or canola unless labeled organic.

Bread/Crackers. Almost all commercial bread is made with corn syrup and soy-based ingredients.

How to lower your cholesterol without drugs - Harvard Health Publications ("all or nothing not needed")

How to lower your cholesterol without drugs - Harvard Health Publications ("all or nothing not needed") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Dietary changes can reduce LDL cholesterol. Substitute polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats for trans fats and saturated fats, avoid refined grains and sugars, and eat three to five servings a day of fruits and vegetables.
Weed out the worst fats

There is so much evidence implicating trans fats in heart disease that the FDA has proposed removing the "generally recognized as safe" designation from them. "The first thing we do when I'm counseling patients is to go over all the sources of trans fats in their diet and make substitutions," McManus says.

Eat more of the better fats

Both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids help lower LDL. Most plant-derived oils, including canola, safflower, sunflower, olive, grapeseed, and peanut oils, contain both. Fatty fish (such as salmon, tuna, trout, herring, and mackerel), seeds, nuts, avocados and soybeans are also great sources.

Go crazy with color

Fruits and vegetables have scads of ingredients that lower cholesterol—including fiber, cholesterol-blocking molecules called sterols and stanols, and eye-appealing pigments. The heart-healthy list spans the color spectrum—leafy greens, yellow squashes, carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, plums, blueberries. As a rule, the richer the hue, the better the food is for you.

Don't be too refined

Whole grains are another good source of fiber. Instead of refined flour and white rice, try whole-wheat flour and brown or wild rice. Old-fashioned oatmeal is also a good choice, but not the quick-cooking versions, which have had much of the fiber processed out.

Remember: Calories still count

All fats, whether good or bad, have nine calories per gram—about 100 calories a tablespoon. While you switch to a heart-healthy diet you may need to keep tabs on your calorie intake for a while.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Lowering cholesterol without drugs has to be a combination of diet and exercise ...

"A major 2012 analysis of several controlled trials involving hundreds of men and women found that dietary changes reduced LDL and total cholesterol while exercise alone had no effect on either."

How This Common Mistake is Making Us Sick and Fat ("you cannot go wrong on water, count ten ways")

How This Common Mistake is Making Us Sick and Fat ("you cannot go wrong on water, count ten ways") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Staying hydrated is one of the most important ways to stay healthy. Here are 10 essential benefits of drinking (purified) water and staying hydrated.

The following specific functions in the body require hydration. Drink more water to:

1. Combat Fatigue

2. Reduce High Blood Pressure

3. Halt Allergies and Asthma

4. Reduce Acne, Dermatitis, Psoriasis, and Premature Aging of the Skin

5. Stop High Cholesterol

6. Eliminate Digestive Disorders

7. Flush Out Unwanted Bacteria from the Bladder and Kidneys

8. Speed Up Joint and Cartilage Repair

9. Stop Gaining Unwanted Weight

10. Slow the Aging Process

Try drinking water with a little lemon and sea salt after a workout instead of sports drinks that are full of refined sugar. Instead of drinking soda, replace this beverage with water. Try adding some lemon, orange or cucumber wedges or even letting a pitcher of water infused with herbs like mint, holy basil, or sage steep in the refrigerator overnight. The result is delicious and healthy.

Another tip: Bottled water is deceiving. It is less regulated than tap water and costs 2,000x more. If you’re on the go, grab a bottle, but otherwise, opt for purified, filtered water.

In colder weather, follow the Dalai Lama’s habit of drinking warm or hot water in a mug. The body has to work less hard to warm up water that is already heated to use it for the numerous tasks that require this essential liquid.

Bert Guevara's insight:

"Without sufficient water in your body, your cells get congested, your skin can’t detox, and your bladder and kidneys won’t work properly. You’ll feel tired and eat more, too. Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy."

8 Steps to Treating and Preventing Cancer from the Inside-Out ("prevention better than cure")

8 Steps to Treating and Preventing Cancer from the Inside-Out ("prevention better than cure") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Following are 8 suggestions from ancient medicines to help increase prana in the body and prevent diseases such as cancer. Try them all

Cancer can only grow in an oxygen (prana) depleted body, according to numerous pieces of research as well as the sister science of yoga, Ayurveda. This ancient healing modality utilizes lifestyle changes, diet suggestions, and detoxification in order to prevent cancerous cells from having an ideal ‘host’ environment in which to grow.

Often, if cancer has already developed, these practices can even help to diminish cancerous cell growth, if not eradicate it altogether. What’s more, Ayurvedic practices are highly effective when practiced as a preventative measure.

Following are 8 suggestions from Ayurvedic medicine to help increase prana in the body and prevent diseases such as cancer:

Oh boy! Will elephant-poop coffee become a thing? Is it cruel? ("it may better protect the elephant")

Oh boy! Will elephant-poop coffee become a thing? Is it cruel? ("it may better protect the elephant") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Jury's still out on Crappacino...

Black Ivory Coffee is made by feeding elephants coffee beans and then, after some digestion, picking the remains from... well, elephant poop.

Like with civet "cat-poop" coffee, the idea is that the fermentation that takes place during the digestion process of the animal supposedly makes the coffee better. I'm not going to argue that part, as I haven't tried it and am no coffee connoisseur, but like with using civets, I have a problem with feeding animals things that they haven't necessarily evolved to eat in those quantities, and keeping them in captivity for those reasons.

The latter part might not be as big a problem in this case, as the company behind the elephant poop coffee (how's that for branding?) claims that they only use "street rescued Thai elephants at the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation" and that "8% of Black Ivory Coffee sales will help fund a specialist elephant veterinarian to provide free care to all the elephants of Thailand through the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation", but there are still questions that remain about the long-term effect of feeding coffee beans to elephants.

I'm genuinely wondering. I'm not saying it's necessarily bad, and the intentions behind this venture certainly seems to be good (though sometimes it's the unintended consequences of our actions that are problematic). The jury's still out...

Either way, don't drink civet coffee. That one is cruel for sure.

9 Ways Processed Foods Are Slowly Killing People » EcoWatch ("unmask this silent 'unreal food' killer")

9 Ways Processed Foods Are Slowly Killing People » EcoWatch ("unmask this silent 'unreal food' killer") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Processed foods are usually loaded with added sugar … or its evil twin, High Fructose Corn Syrup. Processed foods are high in unhealthy fats. Hydrogenated

The word “processed” often causes some confusion, so let me clarify what I mean.

Obviously, most foods we eat are processed in some way. Apples are cut from trees, ground beef has been ground in a machine and butter is cream that has been separated from the milk and churned.

But there is a difference between mechanical processing and chemical processing.

If it’s a single ingredient food with no added chemicals, then it doesn’t matter if it’s been ground or put into a jar. It’s still real food.

However … foods that have been chemically processed and made solely from refined ingredients and artificial substances, are what is generally known as “processed food.”

Here are nine ways that processed foods are bad for your health.

1. Processed Foods Are Usually High in Sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup

2. Processed Foods Are “Hyper Rewarding” and Lead to Overconsumption

3. Processed Foods Contain All Sorts of Artificial Ingredients

4. Many People Can Literally Become Addicted to Processed Junk Foods

5. Processed Foods Are Often High in Refined Carbohydrates

6. Most Processed Foods Are Low in Nutrients

7. Processed Foods Tend to be Low in Fiber

8. It Requires Less Energy and Time to Digest Processed Foods

9. Processed Foods Are Often High in Trans Fats or Processed Vegetable Oils

Bert Guevara's insight:

"When we replace real, traditional foods like butter, meat and vegetables with crappy, processed junk foods, we get fat and sick.

"Real food is the key to good health, processed food is not. Period."

Why Probiotics are Essential if You are Taking Antibiotics ("repopulating the good bacteria")

Why Probiotics are Essential if You are Taking Antibiotics ("repopulating the good bacteria") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
If you ever take antibiotics, then you need to learn about probiotics and how they are essential for repopulating the beneficial bacteria in your gut.

If you must take antibiotics, take probiotics too. The former should not be taken without the latter, or you’ll open yourself up to other infections and candida (yeast).

You can find probiotics naturally in several foods. Fermented foods like kefir and sauerkraut are teeming with these beneficial bacteria. Similarly, yogurt “with active cultures” is a good source. If you prefer supplements, probiotics are available there too.

While antibiotics are often taken without just cause, taking probiotics can minimize their damage. If you’re really interested in keeping your body running efficiently with as little unnatural damage as possible, consider natural antibiotics like garlic, manduka honey, and Echinacea. The human body is an amazing thing, perfectly crafted to fight infection. When we give our immune system the right environment (through healthy diet, exercise, etc.), it can successfully combat many illnesses that doctors target with antibiotics.

Bert Guevara's insight:

After the war comes rehabilitation. Such principle applies to the body too.

"Antibiotics work by killing bacteria, but they don’t discriminate. They kill all bacteria, and as mentioned, not all bacteria is bad. Your body depends on bacteria to aid in digestion, work with immune health, and balance your internal ecosystem. In fact, gut health, which is what’s being affected here, has a direct link to chronic illness and overall health."

Top 5 Medicinal Foods for Super Immunity ("immunization can be approached the natural way; no harm")

Top 5 Medicinal Foods for Super Immunity ("immunization can be approached the natural way; no harm") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Many foods are medicinal and can even be life-saving. Here are my top 5 food choices for preventing illness and boosting the immune system.

Healing occurs from the inside out. Another way of saying that is you are what you eat. There are countless healthful foods available to the average modern consumer. Many of these foods—grown locally, eaten in-season, and loaded with nutrients—can help you prevent illness and maintain a healthy body weight, immune system, and more. Some can simply be life-saving medicinal foods.

So which foods pack the most medicinal punch? Which are tops when it comes to healing disease and illness? You have likely heard of them before if you are an avid reader of NaturalSociety. Here are my top choices of medicinal foods:

1. Ginger

Used throughout the ages for its healing properties (like many foods on this list), ginger been linked to: cancer prevention, anti-inflammatory benefits, sore throat and upset stomach relief, and more.

2. Garlic

Garlic is an immune-boosting powerhouse that is widely used in kitchens around the world. Like ginger, studies have linked the root to anti-cancer benefits. Garlic’s anti-cancer powers are so widely accepted that even the National Cancer Institute (generally only aligning with “conventional” cancer treatments) said, “preliminary studies suggest that garlic consumption may reduce the risk of developing several types of cancer, especially cancers of the gastrointestinal tract.”

3. Green Tea

Like garlic and ginger, green tea also has anti-cancer benefits. Additionally, green tea could speed up weight loss, boost heart health, and prevent diabetes as well.

4. Manuka Honey

Honey derived from bees who feast on the nectar and pollen of manuka flowers has been found to have prolific antibacterial benefits—even working against antibacterial-resistant infections like MRSA.

5. Turmeric

Gaining popularity in the West due in part to its medicinal benefits, turmeric is most often seen in middle-eastern cuisines and folk medicine. It’s tied to blood sugar management, cancer prevention,  oral health, and even treating depression.

Bert Guevara's insight:

So which foods pack the most medicinal punch? Which are tops when it comes to healing disease and illness? Read and find out.

Natural Cures for Sinus Infection Includes Use of Turmeric ("try a natural remedy; check the mix")

Natural Cures for Sinus Infection Includes Use of Turmeric ("try a natural remedy; check the mix") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
There are a number of natural cures for sinus infection, with turmeric being one of them.

While there is a lack of research focusing on turmeric’s ability to treat sinus infection, this doesn’t stop individuals around the world from utilizing turmeric for sinus infection relief. The active ingredient in turmeric, known as curcumin, helps to heal the sinus cavity and clear the airways. Since sinus infections are caused by nasal inflammation, and turmeric possesses anti-inflammatory properties, the spice can be an effective solution for sinus infection.

If you’re able to find turmeric root at a local health food store, purchase it. Try mixing about 2, 2″ pieces of turmeric root with 1 lemon, 1 tablespoon of honey, cayenne pepper, and water to create a turmeric smoothie. You may also add banana for extra flavor. Many individuals see complete improvement within 3 days of drinking the smoothie, even if the sinus infection has been present for weeks at a time.

In addition to being one of many natural cures for sinus infection, turmeric can have a profound positive effect on your health. Turmeric uses are vast, with the spice being able to detoxify the liver and even fight cancer. In fact, turmeric has been shown to have anticancer properties many times, showing how incredible the spice can really be.

Bert Guevara's insight:

No therapeutic claims - but try it on your sinus and tell us if it works.

The researchers fed different groups of mice a range of liquids: sweetened diluted grapefruit juice, sweetened water, and water that contained metformin, a diabetes drug. The mice who were fed a high-fat diet typical of the average American and drank the grapefruit juice lost 18% more weight than those drinking sweetened water, and they had a 13-17% drop in blood glucose levels and threefold decrease in insulin levels. (Mice on a low-fat diet had far less dramatic effects.)

But one of the biggest findings was that mice drinking grapefruit juice had glucose-lowering effects that were just as potent as the mice who sipped on metformin. “It was very surprising,” says Napoli.

You might have to drink a lot to get those prescription-level effects, however. The amount of grapefruit juice used in mice equates about four cups a day in people, the study says. But the researchers were so encouraged by the results that they plan to next look at if lower doses have the same impact.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Metformin HCL is a lifetime maintenance drug for diabets. Grapefruit may be a good substitute once in a while to break the monotony.

“When someone says a particular food has this magic quality of improving your health all by itself, we mostly take that kind of claim with a grain of salt,” Napoli says. But Napoli, an avid grapefruit juice drinker himself, who says he’s convinced a few colleagues of its health merit, thinks his results show that grapefruits might actually do something special when it comes to diabetes.

Boosting Selenium Intake 'Cuts Cancer Rates by 41%' (another natural cancer-beater")

Boosting Selenium Intake 'Cuts Cancer Rates by 41%' (another natural cancer-beater") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Studies show that those who took selenium supplements for at least 10 years had almost half (41 percent) the rate of cancer as those taking a placebo.

For those suffering from prostate, esophageal, colorectal and lung cancer, you may want to take note. Selenium is a naturally occurring trace element which is a constituent of more than two dozen selenoproteins that play critical roles in reproduction, thyroid hormone metabolism, DNA synthesis, and protection from oxidative damage and infection.

It also is a cancer preventative like nobody’s business! Studies from Cornell University and the University of Arizona alike show that those who took selenium supplements for at least 10 years had almost half (41%) the rate of cancer as those taking a placebo.

Selenium occurs in its organic form in many of the foods you likely already eat. You can increase your dosage of these foods to get the trace element in its purest form. Selenium is available in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian forms:

Brazil Nuts - Approx. 2546 micrograms per cupCooked Oysters - Approx. 38.5 micrograms per oyster (25 grams)Whole Wheat Bread - Approx. 11.3 micrograms per sliceTuna - 30.7 micrograms per ounceSunflower seeds - Approx. 101.5 micrograms per cupBeef, Lamb - 38.1 micrograms per 85g (3oz)Pork - 43.9 micrograms per 85g (3oz)Chicken and Turkey – 52.9 micrograms per 140 gramsMushrooms – Approx. 19 micrograms per cup sliced

Drugs used for anxiety, sleep are linked to Alzheimer's disease in older people ("long term use bad")

Drugs used for anxiety, sleep are linked to Alzheimer's disease in older people ("long term use bad") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Older people who have relied on a class of drugs called benzodiazepines to reduce anxiety or induce sleep are at higher risk of going on to develop Alzheimer's disease , new research finds, with those whose use of the medications is most intensive almost twice as likely to develop the mind-robbing disorder.

Benzodiazepines -- marketed under such names as as Xanax, Valium, Ativan and Klonopin -- are widely used to treat insomnia, agitation and anxiety, all of which can be early signs of impending Alzheimer's disease in the elderly. But the current study sought to disentangle benzodiazepines' use in treating early dementia symptoms, probing instead the possibility that heavy use of the medications may permit, cause or hasten the onset of Alzheimer's dementia.

The study compared the pattern of benzodiazepine use in 1,796 elderly people diagnosed with Alzheimer's with that of 7,184 similar people who had no such diagnosis. Such a study design, conducted by French and Canadian researchers and published Tuesday in the journal BMJ, cannot by itself establish that more intensive use of the medications causes Alzheimer's disease. But it does strengthen such suspicions.

The benzodiazepines specifically considered by the researchers were the short-acting anti-anxiety medications alprazolam (Xanax), lorazepam (Ativan), oxazepam (Seresta) and diazepam (Valium), and the longer-acting anti-seizure and "hypnotic" drugs frequently used to treat insomnia: clonazepam (Klonopin), flurazepam (Dalmane), midazolam (Versed), nitrazepam (Mogadon), temazepam (Restoril) and triazolam (Halcion).

Bert Guevara's insight:

For older people with anxiety and sleeping problems, this is a friendly reminder.

"International medical guidelines recommend the use of benzodiazepines as treatment for anxiety disorders and transient insomnia, but caution that they are not meant for long-term use, and should not be taken steadily for more than three months. But many patients continue to take these drugs for years."

NRDC: The Dating Game ("dates are only suggestions & indicate peak quality; not health safety")

NRDC: The Dating Game ("dates are only suggestions & indicate peak quality; not health safety") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
NRDC: U.S. consumers and businesses needlessly trash billions of pounds of food every year as a result of America's dizzying array of food expiration date labeling practices.

Here's a superbly-kept secret: All those dates on food products -- sell by, use by, best before -- almost none of those dates indicate the safety of food, and generally speaking, they're not regulated in the way many people believe. The current system of expiration dates misleads consumers to believe they must discard food in order to protect their own safety. In fact, the dates are only suggestions by the manufacturer for when the food is at its peak quality, not when it is unsafe to eat.

Confusion over dates, according to a survey by the Food Marketing Institute, leads nine out of 10 Americans to needlessly throw away food. For the average family of four, this could translate to several hundred dollars' worth of food being thrown away every year. A senseless waste, when we're all keeping a close eye on our household budgets, and when one in six Americans lacks a secure supply of food. Because regulators, industry players, and citizens have become accustomed to seeing date labels on many food products over time, policymakers have not asked important questions about the date labeling system, and there has been a dearth of rigorous policy analyses of how these labels affect consumers' choices surrounding purchasing and discarding food products.

This report by NRDC and the Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic examines the historical impetus for placing dates on food -- namely a desire to indicate products' freshness -- and the ways in which the system has failed to meet this goal. Relevant federal laws and authorities are described along with a comparison of state laws related to food date labeling.
