The Truth About Zero-Calorie Food - Weight Center - EverydayHealth.com

The Truth About Zero-Calorie Food - Weight Center - EverydayHealth.com | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
You cant magically lose weight by only eating food with so-called zero calories. Learn the role these foods play in your diet for weight loss or maintenance.

Apart from foods that have been engineered to be calorie-free, like sugar substitutes, virtually all foods contain calories. Some foods contain very few calories, and we do burn a few calories when we chew and digest the foods we eat. But the notion that eating certain foods can put us into a negative calorie balance just isn't true.

Although these food choices with supposed "zero calories" aren't going to put you into a negative calorie balance, there are other great benefits to eating them. "They are all fruits and vegetables, so they are great foods to incorporate into your diet," says Lummus.

These foods are also high in fiber and pack a hefty nutrition punch. Fruits and vegetables tend to be "nutrient-dense," meaning that they contain relatively few calories in comparison to their high level of nutrients.

What's more, they can help you lose weight. Fruits and vegetables can be just as filling as higher-calorie foods, but with far fewer calories and often a lot more bulk.

Brazil strikes back at junk food ("ultra-processed foods or junk foods are the enemy, recognize them")

Brazil strikes back at junk food ("ultra-processed foods or junk foods are the enemy, recognize them") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
In an unprecedented step for a developing country, the Brazilian government is officially urging its citizens to avoid ultra-processed foods in favor of raw and minimally processed foods in order to improve nutrition and help curb obesity.

Brazil hopes to get a jump on the junk food industry by dissuading its people from choosing what Monteiro called “ready-to-eat, ready-to-heat” meals that are typically energy-dense, depleted of nutrients, and fatty, sugary, or salty. Currently, he said, 70 percent of Brazilian food is still raw or minimally processed.

Brazil is thought to be the first developing nation to use public education to try to slow the marketing onslaught of processed food producers. Despite protests by Brazil’s food industry, the government went ahead with the guidelines. Monteiro noted that many of the foods the guidelines recommend, such as soups, salads, and pastas, do have some minimal processing.

EWG also recommends avoiding highly processed foods and opting instead for raw and minimally processed foods, which typically are more nutritious and contain fewer unhealthy ingredients and additives.

If you’re looking for less-processed foods, EWG’s Food Scores database can help you. EWG’s research staff scoured the scientific and food-manufacturing literature to determine how ingredients in food are generally made and processed and rated 80,000 products according to nutrition, hazard concerns and degree of processing. Food Scores’ easy-to-use database can help you make informed, healthy food choices at home or at the store using your computer or iPhone app.

Bert Guevara's insight:

How about the Filipino consumer, aren't they supposed to be warned also?

Corporations Have Renamed 'High Fructose Corn Syrup' ("know what sweetener is in your food")

Corporations Have Renamed 'High Fructose Corn Syrup' ("know what sweetener is in your food") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it

Food companies are still trying to hide health-damaging ingredients with different names, as is the case with General Mills and high fructose corn syrup.

A study just published investigated the effects of various sugar solutions on lab rats. It found that the isolated fructose solution, as opposed to other sugars tested, resulted in a doubling of circulating triglycerides.

Another study published in late summer found that consumption of HFCS-55 negatively impacts hippocampal function, metabolic outcomes, and neuroinflammation when consumed in excess during the adolescent period of development.

Yet even more research published this year found higher-than-expected amounts of isolated fructose in beverages they tested. Popular drinks made with HFCS contain 50% more isolated fructose than glucose. They concluded that beverages made with HFCS have a sugar profile very different than sucrose (table sugar), in which fructose and glucose are equivalent and balanced. Additionally, this research team suggested that current dietary analyses may underestimate actual fructose consumption.

Consumer watchdog group Citizens for Health has petitioned the FDA asking for labeling specifying the amounts of fructose in products containing HFCS, as well as notification to food producers that any product containing HFCS at a higher level than 55% fructose is considered to be adulterated under federal regulations and cannot be sold in interstate commerce.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Know what is in your sweeteners.

"If you want to engage in a healthful diet and you don’t want to be fooled by Big Food, it is essential that you read the labels of the products you buy. If you see ingredients that compromise health or that you can’t pronounce or understand, walk away from all the products made by that company. It is clear that company does not have your best interests at heart. Buy only from companies that have demonstrated over and over that they care more about you than they do about their bottom line."

10 ways sleep deprivation affects you - Agenda - The World Economic Forum ("unrecognized epidemic")

10 ways sleep deprivation affects you - Agenda - The World Economic Forum ("unrecognized epidemic") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Sleep deprivation is rampant in developed countries, with most people experiencing some disruption to their sleep schedule, writes Tom McKay.

A combination of highly demanding jobs, constant stimulation and 24/7 everything has made skipped sleep so common that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now considers it an unrecognized epidemic.

But that “unrecognized epidemic” is about more than just feeling tired. It can actually lead to a number of entirely unnecessary, chronic conditions. Here are 10 things sleep deprivation can do to you:

It’s killing your productivity: ...

According to the Wall Street Journal, another study by Singapore Management University researchers found that every hour of lost sleep translated to an additional 8.4 minutes of online procrastination the next day.

In fact, it makes you worse at pretty much everything: In Sleepless in America, National Transportation Safety Board member Mark Rosekind puts it in stark terms: “Every aspect of who you are as a human, every capability is degraded, impaired, when you lose sleep. What does that mean? Your decision-making, reaction time, situational awareness, memory, communication, and those things go down by 20% to 50%.”

Bert Guevara's insight:

Enough hours of quality sleep is no longer an option in modern living. In fact, the lack of sleep has become an UNRECOGNIZED EPIDEMIC.

How to Optimize Turmeric Absorption for Super-Boosted Benefits ("best taken with fats or oil")

How to Optimize Turmeric Absorption for Super-Boosted Benefits ("best taken with fats or oil") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Turmeric can be amazingly healthful, but it is important to know how to take turmeric so it can be fully absorbed by the body. Here is what to do.

Golden Milk Tea, sometimes referred to as only golden milk, is an ancient way of experiencing the benefits of turmeric with helpful fat included. While there are many recipes for golden milk, they usually involve dissolving a paste of turmeric and water into a small cup of milk and coconut oil. Remember to use high-quality organic turmeric in the milk preparation. Also, as NaturalNews reports, you can prepare the paste in advance and keep it in your refrigerator for weeks.

Other ways to get the most out of your turmeric:

- Sprinkle some on an avocado

- Dissolve it in a tablespoon of coconut oil before adding it to a smoothie

- Stir it into olive oil and then toss in fresh vegetables

- Consume turmeric or curcumin with black pepper. “Adding black pepper to turmeric or turmeric-spiced food enhances curcumin’s bioavailability by 1,000 times, due to black pepper’s hot property called piperine,” says nutritionist Stacy Kennedy.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Make the most of your turmeric fix. Read the many ways it can be taken to maximize effects.

"A little fat plus a little turmeric equals a whole host of health benefits. From reducing blood pressure and inflammation to preventing Alzheimer’s and treating depression—making the most of this beautiful root could have immeasurable positive effects on your health."

Ebola is scary, but antibiotic resistance should scare us more | David Robert Grimes ("silent killer")

Ebola is scary, but antibiotic resistance should scare us more | David Robert Grimes ("silent killer") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
David Robert Grimes: Irresponsible media coverage stokes fears out of all proportion to the actual risks, while major health threats are considered insufficiently newsworthy

The converse of this is that things that present a real and present danger to us are often ignored because they are not deemed particularly newsworthy. Through all the sound and fury over the exceptionally unlikely scenario of Ebola taking hold in Europe or the US, we fail to heed warnings about genuine threats, such as the ominous words of the WHO’s Dr Keiji Fukuda concerning the growing danger of antibiotic resistance:

… without urgent, coordinated action by many stakeholders, the world is headed for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades can once again kill.

This is not some hypothetical eventuality in an unwritten future – it is already happening. Once treatable diseases such as gonorrhoea, pneumonia, E coli,Staphylococcus and tuberculosis have acquired immunity to many classes of antibiotic, and are again claiming lives on a scale unprecedented since these drugs first became available.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US estimates that two million Americans a year develop a serious antibiotic-resistant infection and 23,000 die as a result, with similar numbers succumbing in Europe.

Bert Guevara's insight:

At 23,000 deaths in U.S. alone, this health issue (antibiotic resistance) is not getting enough media attention, unlike ebola. Maybe because certain corporate interests are at stake.

Keeps you hydrated
... It consists of 90-95 percent water, making it a good ally for combating heat and dehydration while giving you a refreshing taste.

Promotes bone health
... one cup of cucumber provides 11% of your daily vitamin K needs.

Prevents cardiovascular diseases and cancer
Cucumbers also contain lignans, which research has shown may decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease as well as several types of cancer.

Rejuvenates skin

Lowers blood pressure
Improves memory

The flavonol that can be found in cucumber is shown to improve memory and protect nerve cells from age-related decline.

Telling your mainstream medical doctor that you’d like to forfeit chemotherapy and instead adopt an organic lifestyle full of juicing and raw nutrition to treat your own cancer could lead him or her to label you as ‘insane’, but it could also save your life. In the case of one man with stage 3 colon cancer given a 60% chance to live for a maximum of five more years under chemotherapy, he decided to forfeit chemo and venture into a natural health lifestyle only to be more than satisfied 9 years later.

Nine years later, Chris is now alive and healthy with his wife and two daughters thanks to his rigorous natural health lifestyle and raw food diet. His story has been seen by thousands on Youtube, and most recently has gone viral on the GreenMedInfoTV website. In his own words from his blog:

SPAM and superbugs: How breeding fatter hogs with antibiotics created a human health crisis

SPAM and superbugs: How breeding fatter hogs with antibiotics created a human health crisis | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it

The researchers were unable to say exactly how MRSA was making the jump from the confined hogs to the workers in the barns and the nearby residents, but they noted that manure from CAFOs is typically spread as fertilizer on the corn and soybean fields surrounding the barns. “MRSA can be aerosolized from this manure to human food or water sources,” they concluded. “The increasing populations of swine raised in densely populated CAFOs and exposed to antibiotics presents opportunities for drug-resistant pathogens to be transmitted among human populations.”

But recent research indicates that as much as 80 percent to 90 percent of tetracyclines and other common antibiotics are still in active form when excreted by hogs. And far from hostile environments to bacterial growth, waste pits have been shown to be an ideal breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant strains of E. coli and S. aureus. Officials from the Des Moines Water Works assured me that their filtration systems, and those used in most local municipal water treatment plants, do an excellent job of removing antibiotics and bacteria from the water supply. But those downstream systems do nothing for people taking their water from wells near hog confinements or who live in homes neighboring fields where the application of manure releases antibiotic-resistant bacteria—and other contaminants—into the air and soil. The University of Iowa researchers were unequivocal: “Our study indicates that residential proximity to large numbers of swine in CAFOs in Iowa is associated with increased risk.”

Spam may no longer dominate the American dinner table, but the practice it birthed—using drugs to produce ever-bigger animals—affects all of us now more than ever. A recent study commissioned by Consumer Reports found that nearly two-thirds of pork products sold in America’s grocery stores are contaminated by antibiotic-resistant strains of Yersinia enterocolitica, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, andE. coli. “It’s getting harder and harder for the food-processing industry and the FDA to ignore the fact that the overuse of antibiotics in animals is threatening public health,” Congresswoman Louise Slaughter of New York, herself a microbiologist, said in response to those findings. But until the government gets tough or the crisis affects the bottom line, it appears that superbugs are going to remain on the menu.

Bert Guevara's insight:

By tinkering with ways to raise bigger hogs, scientists have developed a bigger problem that is affecting man's health.

"What looked like a dream come true to Hormel and his stockholders has, in the 65 years since, transformed U.S. livestock production into a nightmare of overcrowded conditions and a breeding ground for “superbugs”—antibiotic-resistant bacteria that grow in the guts of swine and other animals, then pass into the human population via hog manure." (When manure is used as natural fertilizer, the direct link to man is established.)

10 Compelling Reasons to Just Say NO to Antibiotics ("the downside of instant cure - body stays weak")

10 Compelling Reasons to Just Say NO to Antibiotics ("the downside of instant cure - body stays weak") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Antibiotics have helped greatly with modern medicine, but now we need to find alternative solutions. Here are 10 compelling reasons to refuse antibiotics.

A study published by Mayo Clinic found that almost 70% of Americans are on at least one pharmaceutical; antibiotics top the list, followed by antidepressants, and opioid pain killers. This is a problem in of itself, as it the United States has transformed into a pill-popping, medication-dependent nation. What’s worse is that antibiotics in particular are doled out in copious, unnecessary amounts, so much so that bacteria are developing major resistance to this conventional treatment. This is now a potential danger of antibiotics, and a serious grand-scale side effect of antibiotic use.

Even the WHO is calling this resistance a global health crisis, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that the age of antibiotics must come to an end. That is the first (1) reason to avoid antibiotic use.

Magnesium is a Powerful Natural Anti-Inflammatory Mineral (inflammation leads to a host of illnesses")

Magnesium is a Powerful Natural Anti-Inflammatory Mineral (inflammation leads to a host of illnesses") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
A study involving more than 3,700 postmenopausal women found that magnesium can have a dramatic impact on inflammation throughout the body.

While the study provides good news in the fight against inflammation, we cannot reap the benefits of magnesium without consuming the mineral. And the modern diet is replete of it.

When you consume a steady diet of processed foods, you aren’t getting much of anything in the way of nutritional value; and this includes magnesium. But, rather than running out to get a magnesium supplement to take with your value meal tonight, try including some magnesium–rich foods in your diet. These foods include:

Dried herbs including coriander, mint, dill, chives, sage, and basilDark chocolatePumpkin seedsFlax seedsBrazil nutsSunflower seedsAlmondsCashewsMolasses

These magnesium-rich foods would make a great homemade trail mix and can help you fight chronic disease while you nosh.

Bert Guevara's insight:

The management of inflammation in the body is a key component in natural healthy living. The first thing we can remove is the consumption of processed foods and replace this with real foods.

"Inflammation in the walls of the arteries can lead to cardiovascular disease. Inflammation throughout the body can lead to a host of additional diseases including the obvious inflammatory ones like arthritis, but could also be the cause of things like Alzheimer’s. Many natural health experts subscribe to the belief that inflammation is actually at the heart of all disease."

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil - From Prevention to Treatment ("make it a daily supplement")

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil - From Prevention to Treatment ("make it a daily supplement") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
There are a number of health benefits of coconut oil everyone should know about, including help with: weight loss, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and more.

So what are the health benefits of coconut oil?

Manage Symptoms of Type-2 Diabetes

... coconut oil increased the oxidative capacity of muscles and led to less fat storage in muscle and better insulin action.

Assist with Weight Loss

... This study suggests, again, that the fat in coconut oil is processed more effectively and may thus be useful in sustaining satiety without negatively affecting the lipid profile. Coconut oil is effective if you’re looking for how to lose visceral fat (deadly fat on the inside of your body).

Coconut Oil Promotes Skin Health

Among other health benefits of coconut oil lies the benefit regarding skin health. Long used by many cultures in massage oils, skin creams and hair treatments, research has confirmed that coconut oil is an effective moisturizer for dry skin and damaged hair, once again likely because of its rich lauric acid content.

Promote Bone and Dental Health

Coconut oil appears to improve absorption of calcium and magnesium, among other minerals, which in turn promotes bone and dental health.

Preventing and Reversing Alzheimer’s Disease

Lifestyle choices such as diet can help prevent the disease, with some research pointing to the relationship between coconut oil and Alzheimer’s – and how this oil can help prevent and reverse the problem

And on that subject, one more article to consider, perhaps the most interesting potential health benefit of coconut oil of all: brain health. More research is certainly needed, but the potential is certainly interesting. You heard it here first.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Times have changed and nutritional reviews of coconut oil have changed, from bad to good.

"Shunned for many years because of its high saturated fat content, coconut oil’s reemergence as a health food has left some people scratching their heads. An increasing volume of recent research has suggested that not only is coconut oil not harmful, it in fact seems to offer its consumers a number of health benefits. Scientists are now attributing the health benefits of coconut oil to its unique medium chain fatty acids."

Harvard Confirms Concerning Information About Antibiotics ("too much of a good thing gone wrong?")

Harvard Confirms Concerning Information About Antibiotics ("too much of a good thing gone wrong?") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
New research from Harvard scientists reveals concerning information about antibiotics, confirming that the age of antibiotics is coming to an end.

According to the Harvard summary:
“One of the oldest and most widely used antibiotics, penicillin, attacks enzymes that build the bacterial cell wall. Researchers have now shown that penicillin and its variants also set in motion a toxic malfunctioning of the cell’s wall-building machinery, dooming the cell to a futile cycle of building and then immediately destroying that wall.”
This would be a simple microbial process that we could take for granted if it weren’t for the resistance to penicillin and other antibiotics that has emerged in the last few decades. The fact is that scientists still don’t really know how the original ‘age of antibiotics’ worked.
Their findings, published in the journal Cell, explain how penicillin can be devastating to bacteria — which may lead to new ways to thwart drug resistance, but could also explain why ‘good’ bacteria is harmed by antibiotics. How do these drugs differentiate after all?

Bernhardt and his team have shown that antibiotic drugs do more than simply block cell-wall assembly. Penicillin and its variants also “set in motion a toxic malfunctioning of the cell’s wall-building machinery, which dooms the cell to a futile cycle of building and then immediately destroying that wall. This downstream death spiral depletes cells of the resources they need to survive.”

Bert Guevara's insight:

This concern about the negative side of pharmaceutical antibiotics raises the need for 'natural antibiotic foods'. Read the whole article and find out what the fuss is all about.

"Pharmaceutical antibiotics simply kill bacteria indiscriminately throughout the body. That is how they are manufactured. So, if you contract strep throat, for example, the antibiotic you take will kill the good bacteria, lactobacillus, which you need to crowd out Candida and other issues. This is why vaginal and intestinal yeast infections are so common after antibiotic use."

A recent (2013) study found that high cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels in subjects over 50 years was associated with lowered all-cause mortality. (2) Compared to those with cholesterol <190mg/dL, those aged 60-70 years with a cholesterol level from 190-230mg/dL had a 32% lowered mortality rate. Those with a cholesterol level from 230-308mg/dL had a 33% reduced mortality rate. For male subjects with a cholesterol over 308mg/dL, there was an insignificant 2% increase risk for all-cause mortality. Women fared better. Compared to those with a cholesterol of less than 190mg/dL, women with cholesterol levels from 190-308mg/dL had a 41-43% reduction in all-cause mortality. Similarly to men, cholesterol levels over 308mg/dL had an insignificant (2%) rise in all-cause mortality.

Folks, this study is nothing new. Low cholesterol levels are associated with an increased risk of cancer, neurological disorders and muscle disorders. There are many studies showing increased longevity in older people (over 59 years old) who have higher cholesterol levels. Keep in mind that cholesterol is needed by every cell in the body to optimally function.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Taking another look at cholesterol ... it isn't the enemy. In fact, the body needs it at a certain level to function properly. Read on.

12 Mental Health Mistakes You Might Be Making ("keeping brain cells active ensures long term health") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
By Carey Rossi

Depression is usually brought on by factors beyond our control -- the death of a loved one, a job loss or financial troubles. But the small choices you make every day may also affect your mood more than you may realize. Your socia...

Your social media habits, exercise routine and even the way you walk may be sucking the happiness out of your day, and you may not even know it. Luckily, these behaviors can be changed. Read on for 12 ways you're sabotaging your good moods, and what you can do to turn it around.

Get happy now: Lift your chin up and roll your shoulders back to keep your outlook on the positive side.

Get happy now: Focus on your subjects when taking pictures -- or, better yet, just sit back and enjoy yourself. Soak up the beauty and participate in the action. These are the things the will make you mentally stronger, says Clay.

Get happy now: Just get out and move. It doesn't need to be for long -- walking to errands if possible, taking the stairs -- but any activity will help keep your mind moving.

Get happy now: Before you finally tackle your problem head-on, do something that helps you ease stress. Leonard suggests engaging in an activity that helps disintegrate the anxiety, like listening to music or going for a run. This way you can insert a bit of fun into it, instead of stress.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Using this list, I must be mildly "crazy" by now. This is a good self check-up monitor for mental health.

Global warming could make your pollen allergies a lot worse ("up to 200% more pollen at 400+ppm CO2")

Global warming could make your pollen allergies a lot worse ("up to 200% more pollen at 400+ppm CO2") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
A new study suggests there could be 200 percent more grass pollen if CO2 levels continue rising significantly.

Grass pollen allergies are a serious health issue. "Peaks in atmospheric grass pollen have been directly correlated to ambulance calls by patients under respiratory stress and ER visits for asthma and wheeze," notes the new study, conducted by researchers at Harvard and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

... The researchers therefore calculated that there could be as much as 200 percent more grass pollen in high greenhouse gas concentration scenarios, concluding that "we can expect a large increase in pollen production due to increased CO2regardless of future ozone levels."

Most people with allergies really don't recognize this is coming, observes study author Christine Rogers of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. And the health impact, she says, could take two quite different forms. "While it is expected that people with pre-existing allergies will have more pronounced symptoms in the future, we don’t yet know whether this dramatic increase in pollen will also cause more people to develop allergies," explained Rogers.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Do you have an allergy? Read this and see the relation between climate change and pollen allergies.

"The latest report from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, for instance, suggests that greenhouse gas concentrations must be kept below 450 ppm to stave off severe damage. But that should still have serious health effects, albeit of a lesser scale, says Rogers. "Even an increase to 450 ppm will increase pollen production by around 25 percent and will undoubtedly increase suffering," she says."

Organic Food More Nutritionally Rich than Conventional, GMO ("who said they were the same? not true!")

Organic Food More Nutritionally Rich than Conventional, GMO ("who said they were the same? not true!") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Despite what you may hear, numerous studies have found that organic food is more nutritionally rich than both conventional and genetically modified foods.

The Stanford authors also said there was no difference in flavonol content, which was in direct contradiction to what Brandt found. At closer inspection, she realized they had simply misspelled (yes, authors from Stanford made a spelling mistake!) ‘flavanol’, masking the truth about organic produce and their nutrient density. The team had actually calculated the difference in total flavonols, a different nutrient, and reported the result with the swap of an “o” for an “a.”

Unlike the Stanford paper, Brandt’s analysis found that organic produce contained significantly more vitamin C and “secondary metabolites.”

Furthermore, these compounds aren’t just good for the people who eat them, they are also part of a plant’s immune system. They help them to form a natural defense system – which ironically also makes them more likely to grow and prosper without pesticides and herbicides because they can ‘fight for themselves’ instead of being weakened by chemicals. You could call secondary metabolites a plant’s defense system.

Other ‘minor’ antioxidants that are more prevalent in organic foods have also been dismissed.

Even better – the author of this study found that more “mature” organic farms produced even better produce than newer organic farms; the longer soil was worked using organic methods, the more nutrient-rich it became, and thus the better the ‘fruits’ of labor.

Bert Guevara's insight:

It is not true that organic and conventional foods are the same. Common sense dictates that there was something wrong with that conclusion. Check out this article.

"Numerous studies have even found that organic crops have higher levels of magnesium, iron, vitamin C, phosphorus, and lower levels of nitrates than conventional crops and produce. This isn’t even concerning GMOs, which is an even larger issue."

Benefits of Activated Charcoal: Medicine of the Egyptians and Greeks ("want a quick detox? try this")

Benefits of Activated Charcoal: Medicine of the Egyptians and Greeks ("want a quick detox? try this") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Activated charcoal, known as carbon, is used as a detox agent to absorb heavy metals and toxins, but the health benefits of activated charcoal continue.

Carbon:

Has a negative ionic charge that attracts the positive ionic charges of toxins and poisons causing them to bind to the charcoal. They are then surreptitiously escorted out of the body via the eliminative channel of the intestines.Removes heavy metals like lead and aluminum.Deodorizes foul smells.Removes symptoms of traveler’s diarrhea.Reduces ulcers in the stomach. Can be used as a toothpaste to whiten teeth and eliminate foul breath since it kills bacteria.Reduces gas from eating beans and other gaseous foods.Eliminate many micro-organisms and chlorine from drinking or bath water.Removes pharmaceutical toxins from the body. This includes aspirin overdose, accidental household toxin ingestion, and heavy metals. It has been used for hundreds of years in cases of food poisoning. Ancient Egyptians used activated carbon as did the Native Americans.Removes parasites and bacteria from the body. This includes bugs that cause everything from a stuffy nose to more invasive parasites.Removes fungal toxins.
Bert Guevara's insight:

What is activated carbon and how good is it?

"Charcoal is “activated” because it is made to have a very small particle size. This increases its overall surface area and absorptive capacity. Activated charcoal is produced by adding acid and steam to carbonaceous materials such as wood, coal, rye starch, or coconut shells. To understand just how effective this substance is at absorbing toxins, one standard 50-gram dose of activated charcoal has the surface area of 10 football fields. It also encourages bowel movements, so it can help to rid the body of toxins rather quickly."

Detoxing Your Body Naturally Using 3 Simple Solutions ("get that garbage out of your system naturally")

Detoxing Your Body Naturally Using 3 Simple Solutions ("get that garbage out of your system naturally") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it
Detoxing your body isn't difficult, and it's super important. To jump start your natural detox, here are 3 simple and effective cleansing solutions.

As much as we would like to believe otherwise, avoiding toxins in today’s environment is near-impossible. In a 2005 study, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found 60 toxic compounds in over 2,000 people across America. These toxins included dioxins and uranium, not to mention mercury from fish, pesticides from conventionally grown produce, and various off-gassed chemicals from plastic shower curtains and new cars. This is why it’s important to know of simple ways for detoxing your body – and to do so regularly.

Remember to detox at your own, healthy pace and inquire with a holistic physician, especially if you’re attempting your first fasting detox. The good news about all three of these detox methods is that you can do small amounts of it every day or go all-out for three. Keep in touch with your body; you know it best.

Bert Guevara's insight:
The 3 simple detox methods:Juice

Mix organic vegetables with greens and purified water and have as a snack daily, or, if you’re experienced, power yourself through a fast.

Drink lemon water

Beginners should start every day with a glass of lemon water; it is among natural liver cleansing foods, which are major players in the body’s detoxification process.

Sweat

One of the body’s natural method of toxin removal is sweating, which is why we advocate moderate exercise and even the occasional venture into a dry sauna.

The Best Sources Of Iron That You'll Actually Want To Eat (ironman would want to taste these dishes")

The Best Sources Of Iron That You'll Actually Want To Eat (ironman would want to taste these dishes") | The Healthy & Green Consumer | Scoop.it

You know you can get iron from liver and red meat, but if you're in the mood for something different, these unexpected alternatives might hit the spot.
By Corrie Pikul
What it is: A raw-bar feast

How much iron you get: Per 3-ounce serving, oysters have 6.2 mg iron and clams have 23.8 mg iron (no, that is not a typo).

Why it's great: This is one area where shellfish have the advantage over land-dwellers. A 3-ounce serving of beef, which is usually considered a respectable source of iron, has 3 mg of iron—that's less than half the amount in oysters, and a teensy fraction of what you'll find in clams.

One more thing: Iron is a critical component of hemoglobin, a protein in our red blood cells that stores and transports oxygen through the body, explains Janis Jibrin, MS, RD, a registered dietician and the author of The Pescatarian Plan. When iron levels are low, we don’t get enough oxygen, which can cause fatigue, foggy thinking and even heart failure. Women are more likely than men to be deficient in iron, partly because we lose it during menstruation. Aim for about 18 mg a day—but stay well under the way-upper limit of 45 mg, because an extreme excess of iron is linked to a higher risk of heart disease and cancer.

Bert Guevara's insight:

Where else can we get our dose of iron and enjoy eating?
