Based off of the researchers findings, olive oil “thwarts the gene that drives the growth of breast cancer tumours, it switches off proteins that the cancer cells rely on in order to grow and multiply and it protects the DNA from damage that can lead to cancer.”


Virgin coconut oil - Coconut milk contains kinetin riboside, a substance that has been shown to curb the growth of multiple myelomas and is thought to have the potential to inhibit the progression of many other cancers, including prostate, colon, parathyroid adenoma, certain lymphomas and breast cancer.

On the other hand, coconut oil is a source of myristoleic acid, an omega-5 fatty acid that has been found to be associated with increased breast cancer risk. One population study in the Philippines (which has a high rate of breast cancer compared to other Asian countries) found a strong positive association between boiling food in coconut milk and the risk of breast cancer. In addition, high intake of saturated fat has been linked in several studies to increased breast density, a risk factor for breast cancer and recurrence.

The researchers were unable to say exactly how MRSA was making the jump from the confined hogs to the workers in the barns and the nearby residents, but they noted that manure from CAFOs is typically spread as fertilizer on the corn and soybean fields surrounding the barns. “MRSA can be aerosolized from this manure to human food or water sources,” they concluded. “The increasing populations of swine raised in densely populated CAFOs and exposed to antibiotics presents opportunities for drug-resistant pathogens to be transmitted among human populations.”

But recent research indicates that as much as 80 percent to 90 percent of tetracyclines and other common antibiotics are still in active form when excreted by hogs. And far from hostile environments to bacterial growth, waste pits have been shown to be an ideal breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant strains of E. coli and S. aureus. Officials from the Des Moines Water Works assured me that their filtration systems, and those used in most local municipal water treatment plants, do an excellent job of removing antibiotics and bacteria from the water supply. But those downstream systems do nothing for people taking their water from wells near hog confinements or who live in homes neighboring fields where the application of manure releases antibiotic-resistant bacteria—and other contaminants—into the air and soil. The University of Iowa researchers were unequivocal: “Our study indicates that residential proximity to large numbers of swine in CAFOs in Iowa is associated with increased risk.”

Spam may no longer dominate the American dinner table, but the practice it birthed—using drugs to produce ever-bigger animals—affects all of us now more than ever. A recent study commissioned by Consumer Reports found that nearly two-thirds of pork products sold in America’s grocery stores are contaminated by antibiotic-resistant strains of Yersinia enterocolitica, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, andE. coli. “It’s getting harder and harder for the food-processing industry and the FDA to ignore the fact that the overuse of antibiotics in animals is threatening public health,” Congresswoman Louise Slaughter of New York, herself a microbiologist, said in response to those findings. But until the government gets tough or the crisis affects the bottom line, it appears that superbugs are going to remain on the menu.

"What looked like a dream come true to Hormel and his stockholders has, in the 65 years since, transformed U.S. livestock production into a nightmare of overcrowded conditions and a breeding ground for “superbugs”—antibiotic-resistant bacteria that grow in the guts of swine and other animals, then pass into the human population via hog manure." The "WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health" was adopted in 2004 by the World Health Assembly (WHA). It calls on governments, WHO, international partners, the private sector and civil society to take action at global, regional and local levels to support healthy diets and physical activity.

In 2010, the WHA endorsed a set of recommendations on the marketing of foods and non-alcoholic beverages to children. These guide countries in designing new policies and improving existing ones to reduce the impact on children of the marketing of unhealthy food. WHO is also helping to develop a nutrient profile model that countries can use as a tool to implement the marketing recommendations.

In 2012, the WHA adopted a Comprehensive implementation plan on maternal, infant and young child nutrition and 6 global nutrition targets, including the reduction of stunting, wasting and overweight in children, the improvement of breastfeeding and the reduction of anaemia and low birth weight.

In 2013, the WHA agreed to 9 global voluntary targets for the prevention and control of NCDs, which include a halt to the rise in diabetes and obesity and a 30% relative reduction in the intake of salt by 2025. The "Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases 2013-2020" provides guidance and policy options for Member States, WHO and other UN agencies to achieve the targets.

Scientists are suggesting that eating spinach could protect your eyes from the changes that cause macular degeneration, thereby preventing the disease.

As the population ages, the prevalence of this disorder is going to grow and with that, treatment and prevention methods need to keep pace. In an effort to stay ahead of the curve, scientists are suggesting that including spinach in your diet could protect your eyes from the changes that cause macular degeneration.

The disorder is caused by a “progressive deterioration of a region that nourishes the retina, known as the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE).” This deterioration causes the retina itself to deteriorate and leads to difficulty focuses and, in the worst cases, blindness. Keeping the RPE healthy, therefore, can reduce the risk of macular degeneration. This is where spinach comes in.

Spinach contains lutein – a compound that combines with zeaxanthin within the body to create a  macular pigment—an oily, yellow substance that coats the retina. This pigment nourishes the retina and prevents deterioration common in macular degeneration.

Lutein also protects the eyes from free radical damage by helping filter out damaging blue light and ultraviolet light.

Spinach contains plentiful antioxidants and the ingredients needed to create macular pigment. Research is underway to draw causation between foods rich in these pigments and reduced risk. While connections have been made, actual causation has yet to be verified.

We can now utilize ginger root to not only kill ovarian and prostate cancer, but also keep cells from building a resistance to conventional treatments.

Truly among the great medicines of the world, ginger has long been used to treat inflammation and nausea, but the results presented in a session at the American Association for Cancer Research show that in every single instance where ginger powder was used to treat cancer cells, they all died as a result of being exposed to the compound. In medical lingo this is called apoptosis (cancer cell suicide.) When ginger is present, the cells even attack one another, called autophagy.

“Ginger inhibits growth and modulates secretion of angiogenic factors in ovarian cancer cells. The use of dietary agents such as ginger may have potential in the treatment and prevention of ovarian cancer.”

Ginger has also been proven to treat prostate cancer. The British Journal of Nutrition published the results of an American study recently in which ginger extract (zingiber officinale) killed human prostate cancer cells while healthy prostate cells were left alone. Whole ginger extract was revealed to shrink prostate tumor size by a whopping 56%. 

Further adding to the benefits of ginger, the spice has no toxicity when consumed even in high doses, and does not cause people to endure the very uncomfortable side effects of chemo and radiation treatments. The American Cancer Society admits  that more than 15% of men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 20,000 American women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year. Many of these cases can be helped with ginger root.

A new study suggests there could be 200 percent more grass pollen if CO2 levels continue rising significantly.

Grass pollen allergies are a serious health issue. "Peaks in atmospheric grass pollen have been directly correlated to ambulance calls by patients under respiratory stress and ER visits for asthma and wheeze," notes the new study, conducted by researchers at Harvard and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

... The researchers therefore calculated that there could be as much as 200 percent more grass pollen in high greenhouse gas concentration scenarios, concluding that "we can expect a large increase in pollen production due to increased CO2regardless of future ozone levels."

Most people with allergies really don't recognize this is coming, observes study author Christine Rogers of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. And the health impact, she says, could take two quite different forms. "While it is expected that people with pre-existing allergies will have more pronounced symptoms in the future, we don’t yet know whether this dramatic increase in pollen will also cause more people to develop allergies," explained Rogers.

"The latest report from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, for instance, suggests that greenhouse gas concentrations must be kept below 450 ppm to stave off severe damage. But that should still have serious health effects, albeit of a lesser scale, says Rogers. "Even an increase to 450 ppm will increase pollen production by around 25 percent and will undoubtedly increase suffering," she says."

Despite what you may hear, numerous studies have found that organic food is more nutritionally rich than both conventional and genetically modified foods.

The Stanford authors also said there was no difference in flavonol content, which was in direct contradiction to what Brandt found. At closer inspection, she realized they had simply misspelled (yes, authors from Stanford made a spelling mistake!) ‘flavanol’, masking the truth about organic produce and their nutrient density. The team had actually calculated the difference in total flavonols, a different nutrient, and reported the result with the swap of an “o” for an “a.”

Unlike the Stanford paper, Brandt’s analysis found that organic produce contained significantly more vitamin C and “secondary metabolites.”

Furthermore, these compounds aren’t just good for the people who eat them, they are also part of a plant’s immune system. They help them to form a natural defense system – which ironically also makes them more likely to grow and prosper without pesticides and herbicides because they can ‘fight for themselves’ instead of being weakened by chemicals. You could call secondary metabolites a plant’s defense system.

Other ‘minor’ antioxidants that are more prevalent in organic foods have also been dismissed.

Even better – the author of this study found that more “mature” organic farms produced even better produce than newer organic farms; the longer soil was worked using organic methods, the more nutrient-rich it became, and thus the better the ‘fruits’ of labor.

What it is: A raw-bar feast 

How much iron you get: Per 3-ounce serving, oysters have 6.2 mg iron and clams have 23.8 mg iron (no, that is not a typo). 

Why it's great: This is one area where shellfish have the advantage over land-dwellers. A 3-ounce serving of beef, which is usually considered a respectable source of iron, has 3 mg of iron—that's less than half the amount in oysters, and a teensy fraction of what you'll find in clams. 

One more thing: Iron is a critical component of hemoglobin, a protein in our red blood cells that stores and transports oxygen through the body, explains Janis Jibrin, MS, RD, a registered dietician and the author of The Pescatarian Plan. When iron levels are low, we don’t get enough oxygen, which can cause fatigue, foggy thinking and even heart failure. Women are more likely than men to be deficient in iron, partly because we lose it during menstruation. Aim for about 18 mg a day—but stay well under the way-upper limit of 45 mg, because an extreme excess of iron is linked to a higher risk of heart disease and cancer.

A new mice study suggests that grapefruit juice might be just as effective as the type 2 diabetes drug, metformin, at lowering blood glucose. The…

The researchers fed different groups of mice a range of liquids: sweetened diluted grapefruit juice, sweetened water, and water that contained metformin, a diabetes drug. The mice who were fed a high-fat diet typical of the average American and drank the grapefruit juice lost 18% more weight than those drinking sweetened water, and they had a 13-17% drop in blood glucose levels and threefold decrease in insulin levels. (Mice on a low-fat diet had far less dramatic effects.)

But one of the biggest findings was that mice drinking grapefruit juice had glucose-lowering effects that were just as potent as the mice who sipped on metformin. “It was very surprising,” says Napoli.

You might have to drink a lot to get those prescription-level effects, however. The amount of grapefruit juice used in mice equates about four cups a day in people, the study says. But the researchers were so encouraged by the results that they plan to next look at if lower doses have the same impact.

Metformin HCL is a lifetime maintenance drug for diabets. Grapefruit may be a good substitute once in a while to break the monotony.


“When someone says a particular food has this magic quality of improving your health all by itself, we mostly take that kind of claim with a grain of salt,” Napoli says. But Napoli, an avid grapefruit juice drinker himself, who says he’s convinced a few colleagues of its health merit, thinks his results show that grapefruits might actually do something special when it comes to diabetes.
