In an 11-year study, a strong positive correlation was found between degeneration of kidney function and consumption of aspartame-containing diet soda.

It was only after a research psychiatrist concluded that aspartic acid—a key ingredient in aspartame—made holes in mice brains that the FDA rounded up a task force to investigate Searle’s claims. The investigation unveiled a series of falsified claims, corrupted study results, and information that simply wasn’t there. Although the FDA moved for further investigation of Searle by grand jury, US Attorney Thomas Sullivan and Assistant US Attorney William Conlon didn’t lift a finger to help. Conlon, however, found a job at the law firm representing Searle.

Since then, the genetically modified creation, aspartame, has been implicated in a number of studies as potentially causing tumors, seizures, brain holes, and reproductive problems. But the mainstream media won’t report on the aspartame-cancer link.

(New guidelines for children's nutrition focus on broad diet patterns and what kids should eat, rather than what they shouldn't.

In the paper, the doctors focus on promoting a healthy overall diet, and using only a little bit of sugar, fat and salt to make healthy foods more appealing to kids. It was published online today (Feb. 23) in the journal Pediatrics.

"Parents should look for every opportunity to make small, simple improvements in the nutritional value of the foods and drinks they provide children, in school and out," said Dr. Robert Murray, one of the statement's lead authors and a professor of nutrition at The Ohio State University.

To guide parents as well as the pediatricians who counsel parents about a healthy diet, the paper spells out a five-step approach to eating. According to Murray, these recommendations are:

1.Choose a mix of foods from the five food groups: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lower-fat dairy products and quality proteins, such as lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, nuts and seeds.

2.Provide a wide variety of different foods from each food group throughout the week.

3.Offer foods in their most-natural, least-processed state as the family budget will allow.

4.Use small amounts of sugar, fat and salt to increase the amount of healthy nutrient-rich foods and drinks that kids will eat. Good examples include flavored milks or sweetened whole-grain breakfast cereals.

5.Serve appropriate-sized portions for a child's age.

Instead of focusing on the 'don'ts'; let's increase the list of real or whole foods we can take on a balanced basis. This applies to both children and adults.

"Keith Ayoob, a registered dietitian and pediatric nutritionist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, applauded the policy statement for not banning any foods. He said it gives people the information they need to make better choices.

"A total-diet approach is better than calling out certain foods, such as sugar, or suggesting that people eat less of certain nutrients, Ayoob said."

Do you still think high sodium intake leads to high blood pressure? Actually, this is a myth. Here is the story, plus a sound solution for hypertension.

High sodium intake as a source of high blood pressure has been an unchallenged dogmatic mantra for decades. But a few renegade MDs, several naturopaths, and chiropractors have challenged the unproven hypothesis of salt being the basis of high blood pressure (HBP). Turns out that the link between high sodium intake and elevated blood pressure is a false one.

Pure, unrefined salt is actually a necessary and helpful dietary component. Perhaps the most well known salt promoter is Dr. David Brownstein, MD, author of Salt Your Way to Health. Refined commercial table salt, used excessively in processed foods, is processed with toxic chemicals and stripped of its inherent nutritional value. It’s mostly poison with very little nutrition, though even using table salt often won’t lead to high blood pressure.

Actually, those with high blood pressure (and everyone, really) should just consume more foods rich in potassium. Meta-analysis’ show how low potassium intake has the same impact on blood pressure as high salt consumption – the real problem is an imbalance between sodium and potassium.

Nearly four decades later, the results are in: the experiment was a failure. We cut the fat, but by almost every measure, Americans are sicker than ever. The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes increased 166% from 1980 to 2012. Nearly 1 in 10 American adults has the disease, costing the health care system $245 billion a year, and an estimated 86 million people are prediabetic. Deaths from heart disease have fallen–a fact that many experts attribute to better emergency care, less smoking and widespread use of cholesterol-controlling drugs like statins–but cardiovascular disease remains the country’s No. 1 killer. Even the increasing rates of exercise haven’t been able to keep us healthy. More than a third of the country is now obese, making the U.S. one of the fattest countries in an increasingly fat world. “Americans were told to cut back on fat to lose weight and prevent heart disease,” says Dr. David Ludwig, the director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children’s Hospital. “There’s an overwhelmingly strong case to be made for the opposite.”

We have known for some time that fats found in vegetables like olives and in fish like salmon can actually protect against heart disease. Now it’s becoming clear that even the saturated fat found in a medium-rare steak or a slab of butter–public-health enemies Nos. 1 and 2–has a more complex and, in some cases, benign effect on the body than previously thought. Our demonization of fat may have backfired in ways we are just beginning to understand. When Americans cut back, the calories from butter and beef and cheese didn’t simply disappear. “The thinking went that if people reduced saturated fat, they would replace it with healthy fruits and vegetables,” says Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. “Well, that was naive.”

One point is clear, whether people use E-cigarette or regular cigarette, they are consuming nicotine and it is an addiction that kills. Hence, several states in the US are finalizing on calling on an overall ban on e-cigs as with regular cigarettes.

What are E-cigarettes and how do they work?
E-cigarettes or E-cigs, also known as vapor cigarettes or vapes, do not light on fire or burn. They run on a heated liquid or cartridge that release nicotine. They work the same way as their regular counterpart. The end of the e-cig glows as you inhale and a puff of smoke is exhaled. All E-cigs essentially have a battery, a heating element and a cartridge that holds the nicotine and other components.

Using an e-cig is called vaping.

As of now, the school of thought is that "E-cigarettes may be less harmful than cigarettes" but we still are not aware of the long-term risks of the same. In December 2014, of the 600 papers submitted to Cochrane review, only a meagre amount of 12 were up to the Cochrane standard and only two were Randomized Control Trials (RCT), which is the strongest measure. One amongst the two randomized control study by the health research council in New Zealand, published in Cochrane library dated 16 November 2013, interpreted that e-cigarettes with or without nicotine were modestly effective at helping people quit smoking. It also concluded that there is an urgent need to clearly establish their overall benefits and harm at both individual and population levels.

What the present day youth think about e-cigs is that they are light and safe. Hence, there is a rise in its use among this population. Teens think that it will be easy for them to quit smoking later on if they stick to the e-cigs whereas the truth is, once the brain is used to the taste of nicotine, it actually won't give it up so easily.

Maybe "vaping" (e-cigarette smoking) will give a you a few more years than tobacco, but is it that safe as we are made to believe?

"If you do not smoke, don’t vape. If you are a smoker, you can try using e-cigs as an option to conventional nicotine replacement therapies. You can discuss the risk benefit ratio of e-cigarette use for you with your doctor. Ultimately, you have to make up your mind.

"For now, the take home message is that tobacco products are not a good idea; be it e-cigarettes or regular cigarettes."

While many “diets” are fads meant to be followed for short periods of time, research shows that some approaches, including some low-carbohydrate diets and Mediterranean diets can be good models upon which to base your own dietary strategy as long as they incorporate healthy, high-quality foods.

One study comparing a low-carbohydrate, low-fat, and Mediterranean diet followed over 300 people for a 2-year period and found that diets composed of different foods can lead to different weight loss outcomes.  Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, this study concluded that:

Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets might be more effective than low-fat diets.The positive effects of the low-carbohydrate diet and the Mediterranean diet upon lipids and glycemic control suggest that individualized dietary interventions – which take personal preferences and metabolic considerations into account – could be effective.

While there are no "perfect" diets, there are many ways to create a healthy and balanced diet. Take time to read.

"Calories matter, but quality is equally important. When making dietary decisions, regardless of whether you choose a certain dietary style such as low-carbohydrate or Mediterranean, you can also use the Healthy Eating Plate as a guide for how to fill your plate.

"A healthy diet for weight loss also needs to be sustainable, and regardless of what you’re eating, you need to make sure you’re not eating too many calories overall. Calories do matter, but focus first on choosing high-quality, healthy foods."

- If you wear dentures, remove them at night and clean to get rid of bacterial buildup from food and drink.

- Drink plenty of water and swish cool water around in your mouth. This is especially helpful to freshen “morning breath.”

- Brush after every meal and floss, preferably twice a day.

- Replace your toothbrush every two to three months.

- Arrange regular dental checkups and cleanings.

- Scrape your tongue each morning with a tongue scraper or spoon to decrease the bacteria, fungi, and dead cells that can cause odor. Hold the tip of the tongue with gauze to pull it forward in order to clean the back of the tongue.

- Chew a handful of cloves, fennel seeds, or aniseeds. Their antiseptic qualities help fight halitosis-causing bacteria.

- Chew a piece of lemon or orange rind for a mouth- freshening burst of flavor. (Wash the rind thoroughly first.) The citric acid will stimulate the salivary glands—and fight bad breath.

- Chew a fresh sprig of parsley, basil, mint, or cilantro. The chlorophyll in these green plants neutralizes odors.

- Try a 30-second mouthwash rinse that is alcohol-free (unike many off-the-shelf products). Mix a cup of water with a teaspoon of baking soda (which changes the pH level and fights odor in the mouth) and a few drops of antimicrobial peppermint essential oil. Don’t swallow it! A recent study found that a lifelong diet rich in omega 3's can actually inhibit breast cancer tumor growth by a whopping 30 percent.

The latest study, published in Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, determined that a lifelong diet rich in omega-3 fats could prevent breast cancer. The study ruled out other potential preventative factors and isolated omega-3s as the source of a decreased breast cancer risk.

“It’s a significant finding,” said David Ma of the Guelph’s Department of Human Health and Nutritional Services. “We show that lifelong exposure to omega-3s has a beneficial role in disease prevention—in this case, breast cancer prevention. What’s important is that we have proven that omega-3s are the driving force and not something else.”

Making these sort of conclusions is not easy. And though many studies have linked omega-3s to disease prevention in the past, this is believed to be the first that can ‘state its findings with certainty’.

No harm in trying but it provides good chances vs breast cancer. Omega-3 rich foods have been found to decrease breast cancer risk by 30%.

A new study testing the safety of common pharmaceuticals revealed that nearly half of all adverse drug reactions in Shanghai were caused by vaccines.

The study is published in an all access journal called PLos, titled, “Adverse Drug Reactions of Spontaneous Reports in Shanghai Pediatric Population,” and within it Chinese pediatric populations were studied via spontaneous reports gathered from physicians (52.03%), pharmacists (24.27%) and other health care practitioners (15.46%), with only 2.52% coming from ‘consumers.’

This is a significant study for those who are anxious to dismiss vaccine dangers as just consumer confusion or merely anecdotal reports from those who are without real facts. Since many are wary to give weight to any reports that are not from a clinical setting, it is difficult to argue with this particular study’s findings.

The study found that ADRs are so globally problematic that they are in fact one of the leading causes of morbidity in many countries. A 1998 report published in JAMA found that 106,000 Americans die every year from correctly prescribed medications. These are not deaths from overdoses or misuse of drugs – another prevalent problem which is seldom discussed in the scientific community. Furthermore, the study finds that the younger an individual, the more at risk they become for harm due to vaccines and ADRs.

New research from Harvard scientists reveals concerning information about antibiotics, confirming that the age of antibiotics is coming to an end.

According to the Harvard summary:
“One of the oldest and most widely used antibiotics, penicillin, attacks enzymes that build the bacterial cell wall. Researchers have now shown that penicillin and its variants also set in motion a toxic malfunctioning of the cell’s wall-building machinery, dooming the cell to a futile cycle of building and then immediately destroying that wall.”
This would be a simple microbial process that we could take for granted if it weren’t for the resistance to penicillin and other antibiotics that has emerged in the last few decades. The fact is that scientists still don’t really know how the original ‘age of antibiotics’ worked.
Their findings, published in the journal Cell, explain how penicillin can be devastating to bacteria — which may lead to new ways to thwart drug resistance, but could also explain why ‘good’ bacteria is harmed by antibiotics. How do these drugs differentiate after all?

Bernhardt and his team have shown that antibiotic drugs do more than simply block cell-wall assembly. Penicillin and its variants also “set in motion a toxic malfunctioning of the cell’s wall-building machinery, which dooms the cell to a futile cycle of building and then immediately destroying that wall. This downstream death spiral depletes cells of the resources they need to survive.”

6. Lemons – Massage 2 tablespoons lemon juice into your scalp and rinse with water. Afterwards, mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice with 1 cup of water and rinse. Repeat daily.

7. Evergreen Cedar Tree – Using oils with antiseptic, anti-seborrheic and mild astringent properties could prove useful for dandruff. 

8. Medicated Shampoos – If nothing else seems to work and you just want the dandruff gone, try using one of two shampoos: Selsun Blue or Head & Shoulders. 

9. Baking Soda – When you normally shower, try wetting your hair and rubbing a handful of baking soda into your scalp instead of using shampoo.

The idea of coffee as an antioxidant has been around for a while and now a recent study shows that coffee can also serve as a way to stop your DNA from spontaneously breaking apart.Researchers from the University of Kaiserslautern studied the effects of drinking a dark roast coffeeblend on the frequency of spontaneous DNA strand breaks.Two groups of men were made to drink 750 mL of water or coffee per day for 4 weeks. Before the study, both groups showed a similar level of spontaneous DNA strand breakage in white blood cells. Afterwards, they found that there was now a 27 percent difference between both groups, with the coffee group displaying significantly less breakage.They concluded that regular coffee consumption leads to greater DNA integrity. DNA degradationhas been previously shown to lead to mutations, diseases, and even cancer in some cases.

The gold kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) is the subject of a study recently published in the British Journal of Nutrition that suggests a causal relationship between the kiwi and a reduction in the severity and duration of upper respiratory tract infections in healthy older adults.

One hundred and thirty two older adults participated in the research study. Half of the group consumed a diet rich in the gold kiwifruit while the control group received gobbled bananas.  In addition to being an excellent source of vitamins C, E, folate, potassium, polyphenols and carotenoids, kiwi is also high in dietary fiber. The study group consumed enough golden kiwifruit to make up 20 percent to the daily recommended allowance of fiber. While bananas contain the same calories and kiwi, they are not as nutrient dense.

During the 28-day research project, both groups experienced a marked decrease in both the severity of head congestion and sore throat. However, the kiwi group’s head congestion was relieved four days sooner and their sore throats three days sooner than the banana group. Lab samples also indicated that the gold kiwifruit increased the concentration of electrolytes in the red blood cells.

"How do you dilute your foods? Basically, as noted above with sugary cereals, mix half of the bad stuff with half of the good stuff.

"If you have high blood pressure, and you know salted nuts aren’t great for you, take a handful of salted nuts and mix in unsalted nuts, too," recommended Taub-Dix.

"By diluting unhealthy snacks, you’re tailoring your tastes and gradually getting used to food that’s healthier. Another tip from our experts: Pay attention to frequency and quantity when you indulge in an unhealthy food.
“It’s not just about the food. It’s about how often you’re having it and how much of it you’re having,” said Taub-Dix.

MIAMI -- People who eat more whole grains are more likely to live longer and avoid heart disease, but such a diet does not affect risk of dying from cancer, said a recent US study.

Scientists examined the records of more than 74,000 women and nearly 44,000 men from the mid-1980s until 2010. They found that the more whole grains people reported eating, the lower risk they had of dying, particularly from heart disease, after adjusting for factors such as age, smoking and body mass index. Every serving (28 grams per day) of whole grains -- such as brown rice, oatmeal, whole wheat bread and pasta -- was associated with 5% lower mortality, and a 9% lower risk of dying from heart disease. However, eating more whole grains did not make cancer deaths any less likely. “These findings further support current dietary guidelines that recommend increasing whole grain consumption to facilitate primary and secondary prevention of chronic disease and also provide promising evidence that suggests a diet enriched with whole grains may confer benefits toward extended life expectancy,” the study said.

Though doctors urge kids to drink 2-3 glasses of milk a day, some evidence suggests that may not be necessary for children to drink that much for good health.

The good

Most people have heard that the calcium in milk helps people grow strong bones. Milk is also fortified with vitamin D, a chemical typically synthesized by the skin when people spend time in sunlight, but which can be hard to get from the diet, as it is naturally found in only a few foods such as fatty fish, egg yolks and beef liver. Vitamin D deficiency can cause rickets, a disease in which people develop bent and weakened bones, and has also been tied to other problems, such as muscle and nerve ailments.

Overhyped?

Calcium can be found in many other food sources besides milk, including nuts, beans and greens, Lanou said.

The bad

Three-fourths of the world's population has lactose intolerance or cannot comfortably digest lactose, a sugar found in milk. Calcium can also inhibit the absorption of iron, which means drinking too much milk can lead to anemia, Maguire told Live Science.

It's milk or other alternatives ... give kids a choice.

"In the end, milk may not be a superfood, but it does provide valuable nutrients that can be hard to get into kids in other ways, Maguire said. Maguire has found that children seem to have good iron stores and vitamin D levels at around two glasses a day ....

"But if a kid simply hates the taste or has trouble digesting milk, parents don't have to push it. Instead, they can serve other foods to make sure their kids get the proper nutrition, Maguire said."

there are around 53 reasons we simply cannot support GMOs that would need to individually be met before we could even consider doing so.

1. I’d need to believe that pesticide companies have a right to contaminate our biological & cultural heritage with GMOs. Petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides are absolutely raping US farmlands. Corporate farming just doesn’t work.

2. I’d need to believe that as government and industry leaders have concluded, U.S. consumers are too stupid to understand GMO food labels. We’re smarter than they think. And getting angrier all the time.

3. I’d need to agree with the U.S. Supreme Court that organic & conventional farmers have no legal recourse or protection from genetic contamination. Since when did we decide to give corporations more rights than people?

4. I’d need to believe that GMOs really are needed to feed a hungry world. Many countries have already proven that you don’t need GMOs to feed the world. Small-scale, organic farms are the way to go.

5. I’d need to believe that GMOs really are substantially equivalent to their natural counterparts. Which means, of course, I’d need to believe they no more merit patent protection than their natural counterparts.

In an unprecedented step for a developing country, the Brazilian government is officially urging its citizens to avoid ultra-processed foods in favor of raw and minimally processed foods in order to improve nutrition and help curb obesity.  

Brazil hopes to get a jump on the junk food industry by dissuading its people from choosing what Monteiro called “ready-to-eat, ready-to-heat” meals that are typically energy-dense, depleted of nutrients, and fatty, sugary, or salty. Currently, he said, 70 percent of Brazilian food is still raw or minimally processed.

Brazil is thought to be the first developing nation to use public education to try to slow the marketing onslaught of processed food producers. Despite protests by Brazil’s food industry, the government went ahead with the guidelines. Monteiro noted that many of the foods the guidelines recommend, such as soups, salads, and pastas, do have some minimal processing.

EWG also recommends avoiding highly processed foods and opting instead for raw and minimally processed foods, which typically are more nutritious and contain fewer unhealthy ingredients and additives.

Food companies are still trying to hide health-damaging ingredients with different names, as is the case with General Mills and high fructose corn syrup.

A study just published investigated the effects of various sugar solutions on lab rats. It found that the isolated fructose solution, as opposed to other sugars tested, resulted in a doubling of circulating triglycerides.

Another study published in late summer found that consumption of HFCS-55 negatively impacts hippocampal function, metabolic outcomes, and neuroinflammation when consumed in excess during the adolescent period of development.

Yet even more research published this year found higher-than-expected amounts of isolated fructose in beverages they tested. Popular drinks made with HFCS contain 50% more isolated fructose than glucose. They concluded that beverages made with HFCS have a sugar profile very different than sucrose (table sugar), in which fructose and glucose are equivalent and balanced. Additionally, this research team suggested that current dietary analyses may underestimate actual fructose consumption.

Consumer watchdog group Citizens for Health has petitioned the FDA asking for labeling specifying the amounts of fructose in products containing HFCS, as well as notification to food producers that any product containing HFCS at a higher level than 55% fructose is considered to be adulterated under federal regulations and cannot be sold in interstate commerce.

Know what is in your sweeteners.

"If you want to engage in a healthful diet and you don’t want to be fooled by Big Food, it is essential that you read the labels of the products you buy. If you see ingredients that compromise health or that you can’t pronounce or understand, walk away from all the products made by that company. It is clear that company does not have your best interests at heart. Buy only from companies that have demonstrated over and over that they care more about you than they do about their bottom line."
