The French study compared 388 men being treated for prostate cancer with a control group of 281 healthy men and found that those with the disease were twice as likely as the healthy men to have started going bald when they were 20. However, if the men only started to lose their hair when they were 30 or 40, there was no difference in their risk of developing prostate cancer compared to the control group. The study found no association between early hair loss and an earlier diagnosis of prostate cancer, and nor was there any link between the pattern of hair loss and the development of cancer.

Until now there has been conflicting evidence about the link between balding and prostate cancer; this is the first study to suggest a link between going bald at the young age of 20 and the development of prostate cancer in later life.

According to a recent study published in the journal Physiology and Behavior, driving while dehydrated is just as dangerous as driving drunk.

In addition to drivers not bringing adequate beverages on long road trips, many do not stop intermittently to drink fluids when thirsty. In a haste to reach their destination, some drivers avoid all food and drink throughout their road journey. Doing so, however, may prove to be a neglectful habit that can endanger themselves, other occupants, as well as other drivers on the road.

The environmental conditions within an automobile or truck can also be quite conducive toward causing dehydration. Particularly during the hot and sunny summer months, the ambient air in a vehicle will naturally be drying. Turning up the air conditioner to compensate for the radiant heat emitted from the hot, black roadways only further contributes to the dehydration phenomenon. Windy days will even further exacerbate the situation.

All taken together, the task of driving long distances, on roads that are often in disrepair is not as easy as it once was. The stresses, both physical and psychological, can take a toll in such a way that low level dehydration can easily result. For these and other safety reasons, it is highly advisable that water or other beverages be brought on any short or long distance trip so that they can be sipped on when needed.

Both caffeinated drinks and alcohol are highly discouraged for obvious reasons. Coffee is a diuretic as is black tea. Green tea would be the best choice in a glass-lined thermos. All forms of alcohol are not only diuretics, they also grossly impair judgment and slow down reaction time.

Of course, when significantly dehydrated behind the wheel, drinking practically any fluid (except alcohol) is preferable to not drinking at all.

"Lemon water, orange juice, and grapefruit juice are some of the more healthful alternatives that can keep you hydrated at the wheel. So are various herbal teas which do not contain any diuretics. Diluted fruit juices can also serve to quench one’s thirst and somewhat satisfy the appetite when food stops are not taken.

"One of the quickest and best way to rehydrate is to drink coconut water while on the road. The fresher the coconut water, the better – as it will also help balance electrolytes as well as replace trace minerals. It will also stave off hunger attacks while driving."

A study from Microsoft involving 2,000 people has found that the average attention span has dipped to a low 8 seconds - down from 12 seconds in 2000.

There are many effects from smartphones and the like on the human body which are never written about. Information technology (IT) is much more powerful in unrecognized ways than is generally acknowledged.

Because these various IT devices are often very close to a person’s body, they can and do have profound effects on the human bioelectric field. The key factor in this ever-intensifying dynamic between human and technology is the length of time of daily interaction.

In other words, picking up a cellphone to make a couple of calls a day is one thing; being tied to your smartphone 24 hour a day, 7 days a week is something altogether different. Herein lies one of the key causes of the shrinking attention span. Additionally, constant exposure to cell phones near our heads may be dangerous.

Attention span is connected directly to the presence of mind necessary to sincerely engage in person-to-person interaction. How often do the younger generations eschew the focus of personal interaction for the sake of not missing the internet happening of the day? Things are now moving so quickly that many within the younger generations do not want to miss out on anything.

Consequently, their attention spans are being shortened to accommodate that next “BIG” event which can only be experienced on the internet or by way of the smartphone.

The study also looked at how we use smartphones and found that 77 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds reach for their phone when they’re bored, 52 percent check their phone every 30 minutes or less, and 79 percent use their phone while they’re watching TV.”

“Our attention spans aren’t just down as a whole — we’re having trouble focusing in general. Forty-four percent of study participants said they have to concentrate really hard to stay focused on tasks, and 37 percent said they’re not able to make the best use of their time, which forces them to work late or on weekends. ...

"Effective stress management, or lack thereof, has always been a major contributor to the ability or inability to focus. This in turn affects our attention span. Unavoidably, attention spans will continue to shorten as long as information technology is allowed to intrude on our lives 24/7."

Throughout various cultures in the world there are daily practices which are considered indispensable in order to maintain optimal health. In American society, brushing the teeth first thing in the morning is considered one of those absolute “do not miss.” In the Orient, especially wherever Ayurveda is practiced, tongue scraping is considered equally important as teeth brushing.

Because of what takes place in your mouth during a night’s sleep, it’s quite important that the tongue be scraped first thing each and every morning. There are different reasons for performing this health practice, as the following excerpt describes.

“Tongue scraping removes the nightly accumulations of toxins which inevitably coat the morning tongue. Don’t brush them off as they will only be pushed into the the top layer of the tongue.

If the tongue is coated with a white film in the morning it is a sign of the accumulation of toxins in the small intestine, large intestine and/or stomach. The location on the tongue will indicate which parts of the GI tract are dealing with the most toxicity.”

The silver tongue scraper in the photo below is very simply used by gently dragging it across the surface of the top of the tongue — from back to front — over the bathroom sink with warm water running for rinsing the scraper. Doing this a few times removes the white furry tongue growth which inevitably builds up after a night’s sleep.

Want to know a newly found secret for living a long and healthy life? Apparently it applies regardless of your age, gender, or ethnicity. The riddle of good health is solved in part with a simple formula, which predicts how many years of someone’s life will be lost to obesity. According to recent research, the key to longevity is having a waist size that is no more than half your height.

Here’s how you work out the formula for better health:

1. Measure the waist (circumference between the lowest rib and hip bone, around your middle), making sure not to breathe in to artificially expand your waistline.2. Subtract this number (in inches, centimeters, etc.) from your total height in the same way (inches, centimeters, etc.)

If your waistline is at least half your height or less, you can expect to live the average life expectancy of about 81. For every inch over the halfway point, you can expect to shave off several months, or even years from your total life span.

These calculations were devised by researchers at Cass Business School at City University, London who looked at the records of more than 300,000 adults with age differences spanning at least 20 years.

Dr Margaret Ashwell, the lead researchers of the study, said it should be used as a simple health check that anyone can do at home – and a simple reality check if your middle has started to bulge a bit.

Waist circumference is an important indicator of overall health because it shows the amount of central fat in the body – linked to high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease.

Ashwell thinks the waist-to-height ratio is even more telling than the Body Mass Index (BMI) which is widely used by doctors today. She says if people rely on the BMI, they are not getting an accurate reading of their health.

Professor Les Mayhew, who was also involved in the study to be published by the Public Library of Science, said:

“There is now overwhelming evidence there should place greater emphasis on waist-to-height ratio as a screening tool.”

Here are five nutritional flip-flops, and a few more where the jury is still out.

1. Eggs. There was a time not very long ago when eggs were looked upon as cardiovascular time bombs. High in dietary cholesterol, it was said that eating a lot of eggs would result in gummed-up arteries and a high risk of heart attack. Most recent studies, however, cast these assumptions aside. Unless you are diabetic, there is no evidence that dietary cholesterol results in plaque building up in your arteries (studies on diabetics have shown possible correlation but nothing definitive).

2. Saturated fat/red meat. Good and bad news about saturated fat has been bouncing to and fro like a ping-pong ball for several decades. One of our primary sources of saturated fat is red meat (burgers, steaks, beef hot dogs and the like). From the early- to mid-20th century, we were encouraged to consume lots of meat because it was a great source of protein, B vitamins and numerous other nutrients. 

3. Butter. Butter’s stock has gone up and down for 150 years. As far back as 1855, people were told to use oil instead of butter. Like a close-fought basketball game, the duel between margarine and butter has been classic, but it seems that butter has finally gained the upper hand. 

4. Coffee. For many years, coffee was the victim of flawed studies linking it to cancer and heart disease. Problem was, these studies did not take into account other factors, like coffee-drinkers might also be cigarette smokers. The result was that many people gave up coffee, albeit reluctantly.

5. Avocados. Only a few decades ago the avocado was considered a sinful treat. As studies coming out in the 1970s and '80s extolled the dangers of fat, the poor avocado suffered in silence as it was swept up in the low-fat tsunami of scientific opinion.

Eggs, red meat. saturated fat, butter, coffee, avocados. They are all good; just eat them all in moderation.

Approximately 60 million Americans report having experienced insomnia in any given year, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Even worse, 40 million Americans suffer from long-term sleep disorders.

Missing sleep is nothing to yawn about. "Chronic sleep deprivation has lots of negative consequences," says Sonia Ancoli-Israel, fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. She notes that the health risks associated with missed zzz's can include poor cognitive function, problems with attention and concentration, dementia and an increased risk of heart disease.

Are you getting enough shut-eye? Most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep a night, according to Dr. Ancoli-Israel. "People are so busy in their everyday lives and something has to give. They give up on sleep rather than something else," she says.

Even if you don't suffer from insomnia, odds are you've experienced nights when you've tossed and turned, wondering why you can't drift off. "Everyone has a bad night now and then," says Dr. Ancoli-Israel. But if you get tense and worried about not being able to sleep, your frustrated mindset could make it even harder to relax into slumber the following nights.

The consequences of missing even a few hours of sleep can be serious. Research shows that short-term sleep deprivation can cause you to crave high carbohydrate and high sugar foods. It can even make it harder to choose healthy options when grocery shopping. Plus, one sobering study revealed that drowsy drivers who had been awake for 18 hours were just as impaired as drivers who had been drinking.

When people gorged on dairy products—but especially cheese—their microflora seemed to change. In their feces, researchers saw some metabolites that they know are related to the metabolism of the microflora: short-chain fatty acids like butyrate and propionate both appeared at increased concentrations compared to the control diet. They also had lower levels than the control group of TMAO, a metabolite produced when the body metabolizes choline, which is found in many animal-derived foods, especially red meat. (Lower levels seem to be a good thing; other research has shown that TMAO may help transport cholesterol to the arteries and predicts mortality rates.)

The findings suggest that cheese and milk might help modify the gut bacteria to decrease production of TMAO, the authors write. “I was surprised,” says study co-author Morten Rahr Clausen, a postdoc in the department of food science at Aarhus University in Denmark. “I didn’t expect to find anything in the cheese that would change the microflora.”

he researchers can’t be sure whether the increase in gut-friendly compounds came directly from the cheese or if they were formed by the microbiota, Clausen adds—but they could still have a beneficial effect either way. “I’m not completely sure why, but it seems like the cheese and also milk, but mainly cheese, affects the microbiota after eating cheese and that might affect the composition of the lipids in the blood,” he says.

The study adds a new dimension to our understanding how fermented milk products interact with the body. “The previous mechanism was that calcium binds the fatty acids and they’re just flushed through the gut,” he says. “Our study suggests another mechanism that the cheese might work through.”

Two new studies suggest that the ideal dose of exercise for a long life is a bit more than many of us currently believe we should get, but less than many of us might expect.

Exercise has had a Goldilocks problem, with experts debating just how much exercise is too little, too much or just the right amount to improve health and longevity. Two new, impressively large-scale studies provide some clarity, suggesting that the ideal dose of exercise for a long life is a bit more than many of us currently believe we should get, but less than many of us might expect. The studies also found that prolonged or intense exercise is unlikely to be harmful and could add years to people’s lives.

No one doubts, of course, that any amount of exercise is better than none. Like medicine, exercise is known to reduce risks for many diseases and premature death.

But whether that amount of exercise represents the least amount that someone should do — the minimum recommended dose — or the ideal amount has not been certain.

Scientists also have not known whether there is a safe upper limit on exercise, beyond which its effects become potentially dangerous; and whether some intensities of exercise are more effective than others at prolonging lives.

So the new studies, both of which were published last week in JAMA Internal Medicine, helpfully tackle those questions.

The global diabetes rate has risen by nearly half over the past two decades, according to a new study, as obesity and the health problems it spawns have taken hold across the developing world.

The study, published Monday in the British medical journal The Lancet, reported a 45 percent rise in the prevalence of diabetes worldwide from 1990 to 2013. Nearly all the rise was in Type 2, which is usually related to obesity and is the most common form of the disease.

A major shift is underway in the developing world, in which deaths from communicable diseases like malaria and tuberculosis have declined sharply, and chronic diseases like cancer and diabetes are on the rise. The pattern is linked to economic improvement and more people living longer, but it has left governments in developing countries scrambling to deal with new and often more expensive ways to treat illnesses.

The study, led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, a research group, was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It is the largest analysis of global disability data to date, drawing on more than 35,000 data sources in 188 countries.

The ban changed the type of albuterol inhaler available in the U.S., and since then costs have gone up and inhaler use has gone down, according to a new study.

Albuterol inhalers prevent and treat wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness due to asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Generic albuterol inhalers using CFCs were banned and were replaced by more expensive inhalers using hydrofluoroalkane (HFA).

Chlorofluorocarbons deplete the ozone layer and have been gradually phased out of use since 1987, but until 2005 the Food and Drug Administration had said CFC inhalers are essential medicines, so they were exempt.

The FDA reversed that decision in 2005 and CFC albuterol inhalers were no longer manufactured, the authors explain in JAMA Internal Medicine.

The active medication in the replacement HFA inhalers is exactly the same. Only the propellant has been changed, according to Dr. Rita F. Redberg of the University of California, San Francisco, who wrote a commentary accompanying the new study.

The inhaler switch “had minimal or no environmental benefits, but great benefits to pharmaceutical companies,” Redberg told Reuters Health by phone.

Since the HFA inhalers are newer and still under patent, these branded inhalers are more expensive than the CFC generics had been.

This is another case of protecting the environment vs the cost to man. There must be a better and cheaper way of making inhalers for people with asthma.

 

“Here’s an example of a really well intended public policy geared toward improving the environment, but the question is in this particular case whether or not the reduction in use of these propellants was worth it,” he said.

"About 20 million people in the U.S. have asthma, and their use of these inhalers probably does not have a significant effect on the ozone layer, he said."

Eliminating Pesticides

In the natural world, virtually everything is sought out and "eaten" by something else. In the American garden, insecticides, fungicides and herbicides often take the place of healthy soil and mechanical and natural controls. Pesticides are meant to kill. If there is a safe pesticide, it is one that kills only the target organism and leaves no trace in the environment. Few pesticides meet these very selective criteria.

Eliminating Fertilizers

Most commercial fertilizers boost plant growth rapidly. Too commonly, these high potency fertilizers are used in excess, and end up as phosphorus and nitrate pollution of ground water and small streams. Poisoning of aquatic life and severe oxygen deficiencies may result from these chemicals reaching our water sources.

Organic Pest Control Tips

Prevention:

Talk with your neighbors about not using chemical pesticides.

Plant native plants which can hold their own against native pests.

Build healthy soil to have strong healthy plants - compost.

Gradually eliminate plants that always get sick - they are probably not native.

Weatherstrip your house at windows and doors to keep pests out and heat/ac in.

For aphids, do not over fertilize with nitrogen because they seek fresh plant growth.

Attract birds to your yard by planting appropriate plants.

Prune and destroy infested wood.

Remove garden debris like old boards so slugs don't have a wet spot to live.

Get to know your beneficial bugs and don't hurt them!

Craneflies and moles live in the lawn, so reduce your lawn size.

A jumbo problem?

If you’re one of many people who eat shrimp regularly, this may give you pause: A new study by Consumer Reports found that 60% of the raw shrimp that it tested was tainted with bacteria, including some with a dangerous, drug-resistant strain.

Most shrimp is farmed in exporting countries like Thailand, Vietnam, India, and Indonesia, which provide 94% of the US supply. And conditions are pretty gross: If ponds aren’t properly managed, “a sludge of fecal matter, chemicals and excess food can build up and decay,” Consumer Reports said in its study, “How Safe is Your Shrimp?” Shrimp are often given heavy doses of antibiotics to ward off bacteria and algae that thrive in their crowded tanks and ponds.

Shrimp exports from the three biggest exporters—Thailand, Vietnam and China—have suffered in recent years due to an outbreak of early mortality syndrome (EMS), a bacterial disease, which has hurt restaurant chains like Red Lobster.

Consumer Reports tested 342 frozen samples purchased from supermarkets and other food retailers in 27 US cities. Sixty percent were contaminated with bacteria like salmonella, E. coli, and listeria. Two percent of the samples tested positive for the superbug MRSA(Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), a scary strain of drug-resistant bacteria that causes hard-to-treat, life-threatening infections. Three percent of samples had illegally high levels of antibiotic residue.

Raw, farmed shrimp from Bangladesh and India were the most likely to carry bacteria, with 83% and 74% tainted, respectively. Raw, wild-caught shrimp from Argentina and the United States were the least likely to be tainted, at 33% and 20%, respectively.

But the presence of drug-resistant strains suggests that shrimp farms are overusing antibiotics, which can give rise to more dangerous and hard-to-treat superbugs strains.

Shrimp tastes so good, demand is high; so they have to farm it. There lies the problem. Farmed shrimp has its problems, specially if eaten raw.

 

"Harmful bacteria can be neutralized if shrimp are cooked properly—though they can still contaminate other food if they are not prepared carefully. And finding that 60% of shrimp had some levels of bacteria pales in comparison to some other foods: a similar Consumer Reports study found 97% of raw chicken contained harmful bacteria.

"But the presence of drug-resistant strains suggests that shrimp farms are overusing antibiotics, which can give rise to more dangerous and hard-to-treat superbugs strains.

A new report from the Organic Trade Association shows organic food sales in 2014 were the highest ever. The USDA will propose standards for organic seafood

Fruits and vegetables—the number one selling organic category—raked in $13 billion in sales, a 12 percent increase from the prior year. Organic fruits and vegetables now account for 12 percent of all produce sold in the nation. Organic dairy also jumped 11 percent in sales last year to $5.46 billion, the biggest percentage increase for that category in six years. Organic food has consistently far outshone the three percent growth pace for the total food industry, the OTA said.

There are many reasons why more consumers are buying organic, including the perception that it’s healthier, more sustainable and has fewer pesticides. As we previously reported, the Rodale Institute found that there is 7 percent pesticide residue in organic foods as opposed to 38 percent in conventional produce.

The U.S. is the top grower of corn and soybeans in the world and yet we are importing these products because about 90 percent of U.S. corn and soybeans are genetically modified, and thus, cannot be certified as organic. As a result, imports to the U.S. of Romanian corn rose to $11.6 million in 2014 from $545,000 the year before and soybean imports from India more than doubled to $73.8 million, according to Bloomberg News.

Consumer education leads to a greater demand for better products. Organic food will find its place in every table as health concerns influence spending patterns. This trend is happening in most countries, including the Philippines.

 

"Looks like organic food has gone from a new-age trend to a staple in supermarkets and many American diets. Could you use something as simple as baking powder or baking soda to reverse cancer? One man, Vernon Johnston, did just that with prostate and bone cancer.

After Vernon was diagnosed, Vernon’s brother Larry told him to work on raising his pH since cancer cannot thrive in a high or alkaline pH. Larry recommended cesium chloride to raise Vernon’s pH levels into a high alkaline level physiologically.

Vernon did not undergo any harmful orthodox treatments after he was diagnosed. That meant his alternative therapy would be more effective. He optimistically ordered the cesium chloride, but it got lost in the mail. So he frantically looked for another source of raising his pH level into the alkaline range.

That’s when he discovered the remedy of baking soda or bicarbonate of soda with maple syrup. Not having maple syrup in his kitchen, he decided to use the molasses that was handy. He was anxious to kill the cancer before it killed him.

Cancer cells reportedly thrive on fermenting sugar instead of respirating oxygen for their survival. Maple syrup acts like a Trojan horse to allow high pH bicarbonate of soda to enter cancer cells and shock them with a sudden surge of alkalinity to oxygenate them and lead to their demise.

Molasses was all Vernon could use, but it worked and actually wound up creating a more solid mineral base for his nutritional support. Most experts recommend more than one protocol if one is doing it alone at home. Keep in mind that part of any alternative cancer therapy involves abstinence from processed foods and sugars – sugars especially fuel cancer growth.
