As of today that NHS data stored offshore, be it purely financial or deeply personal, is covered by European data regulations, including the soon-to-be-replaced Safe Harbour provisions. If the UK remained in the EU that NHS data would also be subject to the incoming General Data Protection Regulation, which will impose stricter controls and penalties for data breaches. But if the UK leaves the European Union, what will happen to this NHS data, much of it locked into long term contracts and held in data centres on the continent, without those regulations is much fuzzier.y description

Withings, the connected health device company that was recently acquired by Nokia Technologies, has launched a new connected scale, the Withings Body Cardio.
Body Cardio is the fourth generation of Withings scale. The most recent scale from the company, the Body Analyzer, came out in 2013. The new scale shows users their weight, body mass index, body composition (fat, muscle, water and bone mass), standing heart rate, and Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) -- a new feature not present in previous Withings scales. Withings defines PWV as "the speed at which heartbeat-generated vibrations spread out along the arterial wall". It's a key predictor of hypertension, according to the company.

A tiny (one-centimeter-square) biosensor chip developed at EPFL is designed to be implanted under your skin to continuously monitor concentrations of pH, temperature, and metabolism-related molecules like glucose, lactate and cholesterol, as well as some drugs. The chip would replace blood work, which may take hours — or even days — for analysis and is a limited snapshot of conditions at the moment the blood is drawn. Developer Sandro Carrara unveiled the chip Tuesday (May 26) at the International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS) in Lisbon. The electrochemical sensors work with or without enzymes, which means the device can react to a wide range of compounds, and it can do so for several days or even weeks.
attempts to create a personal health records suffer from a “lack of quantifiable benefits” and some schemes face an uncertain future if new funding is not found. A wide ranging review of PHRs, carried out by the Royal College of Physicians’ Health Informatics Unit and funded by NHS England, found that attempts to put more health information in the hands of patients remain at a “relatively low level of maturity.” It also found that while organisations that had set up PHR projects claimed they had led to meaningful improvements - from fewer hospitalisations to cost savings – these were mostly “assumptions or anecdotal.” “Many of the case study sites had invested in PHRs on the basis that they are ‘a good thing’, but with little evidence of quantified benefits,” a report released this week says. “The lack of a viable business case could slow further developments and make existing PHRs unsustainable.”ption
Watson will be trained up on the hospital existing literature. It will also analyse feedback provided by patients, with their consent, about their experience on everything from hospital food, to parking, to their anxiety about treatment. It is hoped that by the end of the year, a newly informed Watson be available through a phone or tablet app, to answer patient questions on demand, whether they concern fears about treatment or just a reminder about an upcoming appointment.iption

The traditional way of integrating into various EMRs required an application developer to recreate a new data parser, integration engine and data mapping schema for every single site they wanted to deploy to. What this meant was spending hours of development time re-inventing the integration wheel instead of focusing on taking the data stuck in the EMR and transforming it into valuable applications. This extra work translated into extra costs to bring an application to market, meaning that the entry cost to innovate with healthcare data was extremely high. What this work also meant was a slower time to market even if you could get past the technical hurdles.
