These doctors make office calls, or video ones

These doctors make office calls, or video ones | Healthcare & Social Business Solutions | Scoop.it
By letting patients make appointments online and parking outside their offices, Studio Dental is one of several startups that are trying to use technology to make health care more available. "There is a consumer desire for convenience in health care," said Malay Gandhi, managing director of Rock Health, a San Francisco digital health accelerator whose portfolio includes Studio Dental. Ringadoc, whose app and Web service help doctors manage after-hours patient calls, was acquired this month by electronic health record provider Practice Fusion. First Opinion lets patients text doctors 24/7. The experience gave her and co-founder Lowell Caulder, a patient and a former financial analyst, inspiration to start their own mobile clinic, one designed for busy employees. The company, which accepts insurance and has discounted rates for uninsured people, gives patients a list of what services they'll get and what they'll pay before the visit. The small yet elegant office has two patient chairs and discreet cabinets with sanitizing machines, X-ray machines and other equipment. The concept of telemedicine has existed since at least the 1990s, but digital health observers think the idea will take off now that smartphones, tablets and computers are nearly ubiquitous. Limited accessDoctors on these services usually don't have access to a patient's medical records, so chronic illnesses, like diabetes, are probably not appropriate for telemedicine, said Jeff Jorgenson, deputy director of telemedicine at UCSF.
