3D printed hip replacements at the Mayo Clinic

3D printed hip replacements at the Mayo Clinic | Healthcare & Social Business Solutions | Scoop.it

Modern hip surgery is now so advanced that one can expect to walk immediately after. But there are some hip ailments too complex for standard surgical practices; 3D printing has swooped to the rescue once more.

The Mayo Clinic have released a film detailing patient, Brook Hayes who weighs just 70lbs has severe deformities affecting her hips which stops her from doing everyday things like walking up stairs. Unfortunately standard hip replacements would not work, however Dr. Christopher Beauchamp is now able to make a custom built replacement using 3D printing.

This is why physicians are burning out

Physicians have slowly but surely lost control. As the control slipped away, physicians lost all say regarding demands placed upon them.
Art Jones's insight:

Excerpt:

Amazingly, time spent at work is not the main predictor of burnout.  The work environment is a much stronger predictor.  Work environments that are high demand, low control, and low support are most likely to cause burnout.  The trend in American medicine over last two decades has certainly brought more demand, less control, and less support for the U.S. physician.  Could this be why we are burning out at an alarming rate?

Though the numbers of health and fitness devices are increasing rapidly, empowering users to record and monitor their bodies, support from the wider community is vital to ensure adoption, growth and continued use, argues Brian Mondry. The general...
Art Jones's insight:

"The device and app alone can work quite well, but there is an historical precedent of people, including those with chronic conditions, not being interested in actively managing their own health. Let's not forget that older technical initiatives such as educational CD-ROMs and nurse-on-call programmes didn't get much traction when they were introduced years ago.

Technology may advance and change, but the same can't be said for human nature. However, adding communities of actual people to the mix – people who share the same condition, close friends and family members who have a loving stake in a person's health and well-being – will cause a transformation in empowered patient disease management."
