UK: Conflict of interest or controlled opposition – Compromised consumer representatives

UK: Conflict of interest or controlled opposition – Compromised consumer representatives | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

Imagine you’re the European Commission.

You want to ram through a bunch of misbegotten laws that will enormously restrict citizens’ freedom of choice in healthcare, along with their ability to choose between healthy and unhealthy foods, while handing yet more power to corporations.

The only way you can do this, assuming you want to maintain an essential veneer of public respectability and plausible deniability, is to portray these laws as essential for consumer safety. Which is the tricky part, since it’s patently untrue. How would you solve...

Herbal Supplement for HIV/AIDS is Successful in Clinical Trial

Herbal Supplement for HIV/AIDS is Successful in Clinical Trial | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

A recently concluded double-blind placebo controlled trial of the herbal supplement Sutherlandia OPC has confirmed what thousands of users already knew - Sutherlandia OPC is 100% effective in reversing HIV symptoms.

From the Tables and Graphs it can be seen that the group that had received the Herbal Mixture had an average CD4 count increase of 135 while the placebo group had an average CD4 count decrease of 87.

The following categorical statement can thus be made: An herbal mixture of Sutherlandia Frutescens and Oleander Nerium is effective in increasing the CD4 counts of HIV-positive individuals with initial CD4 counts of less than 400 in a meaningful way over a 60-day period.

It is also significant that the liver enzymes, which are indicators of possible liver damage when they keep on going higher, were lowered or stable in all the participants who received the herbal mixture.

Apparently Senator Durbin in the USA has a legislative trick up his sleeve. He is planning to add a last-minute amendment to legislation that is a "must pass" piece, and the clause he plans to add will spell trouble for the availability of food supplements in the US.

If you live in the US and count on supplements, you would probably do well to go to the ANH-USA site where there's more information and a possibility to make your voice heard.

Record Numbers of Pregnant Women Are Refusing The Flu Shot

Record Numbers of Pregnant Women Are Refusing The Flu Shot | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

Getting a flu shot during pregnancy provides unanticipated risks to the baby. Specifically, one study showed that the H1N1 vaccination during the H1N1 pandemic was associated with thousands of cases of miscarriages and stillbirths which the CDC failed to inform vaccine providers.

Current data from a 3-year reporting base is confirming previous reports that the majority of pregnant women are refusing influenza and other related vaccines that may jeopardize their health and that of their baby.

In 2011, Dr. Alessandro Bertoucci who analyzed the practices of 256 physicians treating more than 600,000 patients, reported that a staggering 91% of pregnant women are declining influenza vaccines due to fears of miscarriage and suspected toxins in the vaccine itself.

Food health claims - USA: Court affirms scientific free speech for healthy pomegranate juice

Food health claims - USA: Court affirms scientific free speech for healthy pomegranate juice | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
In a 335-page ruling handed down today, an Administrative Law Judge with oversight of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has upheld the right of pomegranate juice manufacturer POM Wonderful to tell consumers about the health benefits of its juice.

Since 1996, POM has invested over $35 million to do scientific research on their pomegranate products at 44 top universities and scientific centers around the globe. Over 70 of their studies have been published in significant peer-reviewed journals, validating the health benefits of the pomegranate and pomegranate juice.

What makes this ruling significant is the fact that the judge said, “The greater weight of the persuasive expert testimony in this case leads to the conclusion that where the product is absolutely safe, like POM Products, and where the claim or advertisement does not suggest that the product be used as a substitute for conventional medical care or treatment, then it is appropriate to favor disclosure.”

Truvada is an HIV drug, an anti-retroviral medication.

"As my previous post discussed, the data submitted as showing tenofovir successful in preventing “HIV transmission” don’t actually support the claim; and years of experience of using Truvada to treat “HIV infection” have shown that it is toxic, particularly to the kidneys."

"Those unpleasant facts are hidden in plain view by adept techniques of spin. For example, statistically non-significant results are displayed as though they were significant."

"What, one might wonder, did all the other studies show?"

Why omega-3 oils help at the cellular level

Why omega-3 oils help at the cellular level | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
Scott LaFee – For the first time, researchers at the University of California, San Diego have peered inside a living mouse cell and mapped the processes that power the celebrated health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. More profoundly, they say their findings suggest it may be possible to manipulate these processes to short-circuit inflammation before it begins, or at least help to resolve inflammation before it becomes detrimental.

The therapeutic benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, which are abundant in certain fish oils, have long been known, dating back to at least the 1950s, when cod liver oil was found to be effective in treating ailments like eczema and arthritis.

In the 1980s, scientists reported that Eskimos eating a fish-rich diet enjoyed better coronary health than counterparts consuming mainland foods.

My comment: ... at least to the 1950s. I remember as a kid that in the 1950s, Lebertran (fish)liver oil was a supplement every kid used to have to swallow a spoon ful every day. It wasn't very pleasant but it certainly seems to have us kept relatively healthy...

Ebdon was moved to wear the logo after his father's death from cancer. But the explosion from the cancer, pharmaceutical and medical industry was prompt. "World Snooker received several messages questioning whether he should be allowed to wear the Gerson Therapy logo..."

Access to homeopathic medicines outside the NHS in the UK is on the verge of being severely curtailed by new and entirely unwarranted regulation.

No case has been made that the medicines have been harmful and need to be regulated. They have been unregulated for the last century with no ill effects.

Nonetheless, UK regulations severely impacting everyone’s right to utilize homeopathic medicines will be implemented within the next couple of months—unless there’s enough of an outcry to modify the law.

Transform Medical Research and the United States Health Care System | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

In this article, John Thomas Shaw, the author of “The RX Factor,” a fact-based thriller that pits one man against Big Pharma and the FDA, proposes a solution to the business orientation of US medicine/pharmaceutical manufacturing.

It is an interesting proposal that contributes to the ongoing discussion of how to overcome the obvious drawbacks of a public health system that makes illness itself profitable.

In an economic sense, pharma is punished every time it promotes a real cure. That is of course why we have no cures, only "treatments", and ever more of those as larger and larger sectors of the population are getting sick.

John Thomas Shaw tries to show how changes in the law could overcome the problem.

Researchers find evidence of disturbed immune system in autism | Machines Like Us

Researchers find evidence of disturbed immune system in autism | Machines Like Us | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
A University of Kansas Medical Center study found significantly lower levels of several cytokines, the immune system’s messengers and regulators, in the plasma of children with autism disorder (AD) compared to that of unrelated healthy siblings from other families who had members with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The study was published in the April 2012 International Journal of Developmental Neuroscience.

In particular, of the 29 cytokine levels analyzed, the researchers found disturbed levels in five related to the T-helper cell immune system and three involved in hematopoiesis or the production of blood cells possibly affecting antibody production required for normal immune system activity.

My comment:

An interesting study - disturbance in immune parameters would argue for an environmental cause of autism (like vaccines or mercury) ‎... although their argument seems to go in the opposite direction:

“Our study further supports a disturbed immune system in children with classic autism that may be related to genetic factors as cytokine proteins are coded by genes distributed among the human chromosomes.”

A hallucinogen called ibogaine seems to obliterate withdrawal symptoms from heroin, cocaine and alcohol. So why isn't it widely used?

"The drug, derived from the root of a central African plant called iboga, had been used for centuries by the Bwiti people of Gabon and Cameroon, as part of a tribal initiation ceremony."

"But it wasn't until 1962, when a young heroin addict called Howard Lotsof stumbled upon ibogaine, that its value as an addiction treatment was uncovered."

"Lotsof took it to get high but when the hallucinogenic effects wore off, he realised he no longer had the compulsion to take heroin."

European Health Claims and Commission Regulations wipe out a century of nutrition & health research as "spam"

European Health Claims and Commission Regulations wipe out a century of nutrition & health research as "spam" | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

The Health Claims Regulation is the preposterous "firewall" erected by the European legislature, the Commission and EFSA between the consumer and that vast and historic body of knowledge to which generations of dedicated, conscientious and hard-working scientists and non-scientists made countless minor and major contributions.

All the information not presented in the Commission's 222 claims is now lost forever. As far as EU's authorities are concerned, it will enter the history books as "scientific spam."

Although the Health Claims Regulation presents a "scientific assessment of the highest possible standard" as one of its key benchmarks, it ranks among the gravest insults ever made to science and the scientific community. Not just because it disqualifies 99% of that community's work as "spam," but especially because it disqualifies the work of all those scientists as potentially misleading.

Is aging a disease?

Is aging a disease? | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
It’s clear that the simple fact of growing older — chronological aging — is relentless and unstoppable. But experts studying the science of aging say it’s time for a fresh look at the biological process — one which recognizes it as a condition that can be manipulated, treated and delayed.

Taking this new approach would turn the search for drugs to fight age-related diseases on its head, they say, and could speed the path to market of drugs that treat multiple illnesses like diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer’s at the same time.

“If aging is seen as a disease, it changes how we respond to it. For example, it becomes the duty of doctors to treat it,” said David Gems, a biogerontologist who spoke at a conference on aging in London last week called “Turning Back the Clock.”

At the moment, drug companies and scientists keen to develop their research on aging into tangible results are hampered by regulators in the United States and Europe who will license medicines only for specific diseases, not for something as general as aging.

My comment: It is interesting to see efforts to have aging classified as a disease, for the sole purpose of being able to develop drugs to treat it.

Perhaps we should make a deal.

Drug companies can get patents for drugs that serve preventive (or generally health-promoting) purposes, while prevention by foods, nutrients, natural "drugs" is liberalized and no longer required to satisfy drug laws as the only criteria for their application ... which of course they can never satisfy.

Drugs from lizard saliva reduce the cravings for food | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
In a study with rats published in the Journal of Neuroscience, Assistant Professor Karolina Skibicka and her colleagues show that exendin-4 effectively reduces the cravings for food.

“This is both unknown and quite unexpected effect,” comments an enthusiastic Karolina Skibicka:

” Our decision to eat is linked to the same mechanisms in the brain which control addictive behaviours. We have shown that exendin-4 affects the reward and motivation regions of the brain” …

The implications of the findings are significant” states Suzanne Dickson, Professor of Physiology at the Sahlgrenska Academy: “Most dieting fails because we are obsessed with the desire to eat, especially tempting foods like sweets. As exendin-4 suppresses the cravings for food, it can help obese people to take control of their weight …"

» Sugar Can Make You Stupid - omega 3 fatty acids help minimize the damage

» Sugar Can Make You Stupid - omega 3 fatty acids help minimize the damage | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
A new study out of the University of California-Los Angeles shows that a high-fructose diet sabotages learning and memory in rats. The study, published in the Journal of Physiology, also shows how omega-3 fatty acids can counteract that sabotage.

“Our findings illustrate that what you eat affects how you think,” said Dr. Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a professor of integrative biology and physiology in the UCLA College of Letters and Science. “Eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain’s ability to learn and remember information. But adding omega-3 fatty acids to your meals can help minimize the damage.”

“We’re not talking about naturally occurring fructose in fruits, which also contain important antioxidants,” said Gomez-Pinilla. “We’re concerned about high-fructose corn syrup that is added to manufactured food products as a sweetener and preservative.”

My comment:

It's good to know that the damage to cognitive ability can be limited by abundantly supplying a brain nutrient... but what about just eliminating the problem at the source - by making that sweet tooth less acute?

Hidden in plain view: FDA is a rogue criminal agency - drugs it approves kill a million Americans per decade! | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
The discovery of a page, on the FDA’s own website, proves the FDA is fully aware that:
the drugs it certifies as safe have been killing Americans, at the rate of 100,000 per year.

The implications of this Smoking Gun are hard to grasp in any rational way.

The FDA takes no blame, no responsibility for its actions, and yet it admits the death statistics are accurate.

Holocaust? Add up the figures. Medical drugs cause 100,000 deaths in America every year: that means a million Americans are killed every decade.

Understand this very clearly. No medical drug in America can be released for public use until and unless the FDA states it is safe. The FDA is the agency responsible for every such decision on every drug. The buck stops there.
