Immortal worms defy aging

Immortal worms defy aging | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
Researchers from The University of Nottingham have demonstrated how a species of flatworm overcomes the ageing process to be potentially immortal.

(Comment:) Researchers are figuring out why telomeres are shortening leading to aging, and more importantly why in some species like the flatworm, this mechanism seems to be suspended, leading to an almost indefinite ability to re-generate lost or fatally flawed body parts.

I wish they'd hurry up...

Canadian Research shows DCA alters tumor metabolism

Canadian Research shows DCA alters tumor metabolism | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
DCA Research Information, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta, University, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada...

Cell-based research and a clinical trial led by University of Alberta's Dr Michelakis have shown that Dichloroacetate (DCA) alters tumor metabolism leading to growth inhibition and shrinking of glioblastoma tumors.

"By altering the way cancer handles its nutrient fuels, specifically the sugars, DCA was able to take away cancer's most important strength, the resistance to death."

One of the intriguing features of this work was that it was funded largely by public donations, including philanthropic foundations and individuals. In addition, it received support by Alberta public institutions, both the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Sciences.

The research team hopes to secure additional funding to continue the ongoing trials with DCA at the University of Alberta.

Is This Fruit Extract 10,000 Times Better Than Chemo? [Video] | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

Over a quarter of a century ago a study was performed on the seeds of the Soursop fruit, also known as graviola, which at that time demonstrated such amazing cancer-fighting potential, that those exposed to it within the conventional medical community looked upon it with complete incredulity.

Published in the Journal of Natural Products in 1996, Compound 1, one of five extracted from the seed of the graviola fruit, was found to be “selectively cytotoxic to colon adenocarcinoma cells (HT-29) in which it was 10,000 times the potency of adriamycin.”

USA: Full scale nationwide attack on pharma kickbacks | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

Cheryl Armstrong writes in the Newark Courthouse News Service:

Giant pharmaceutical companies are overcharging consumers more than $3 billion a year by paying undisclosed kickbacks to induce insured people to buy brand-name drugs rather than less-expensive alternatives, according to six RICO class actions filed this week in four federal courts.

The class actions: two in New Jersey, two in Philadelphia, and two in Brooklyn, make similar claims. The plaintiff unions and their pension plans claim:

"Defendant has paid, and continues to pay, undisclosed kickbacks to privately insured individuals so that those health plan members choose defendant's branded drugs ... instead of less-expensive alternatives."

We also have silence from the thousands of medical personnel who work as doctors, nurses, bureaucrats, teachers in medical schools, researchers and executives in pharmaceutical companies. And no one at the FDA has spoken up.

“Well, this couldn’t be a conspiracy because too many people would have to be in on it.”

This is what we often hear when someone utters the word “conspiracy.” But you see, it happened here. And it happened here because, in part, the silent ones are trained not to question their education and the tons of propaganda issued by their bosses and by the so-called experts...

Washing Your Mouth With A Silver Solution Treats Fungus, Bacteria, Viruses and Yeast

Washing Your Mouth With A Silver Solution Treats Fungus, Bacteria, Viruses and Yeast | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
Yeasts which cause hard-to-treat mouth infections are killed using silver solutions in the laboratory, scientists have found. These yeast infections, caused by Candida albicans and Candida glabrata target the young, old and immuno-compromised.

Professor Mariana Henriques, University of Minho, and her colleagues hope to test silver nanoparticles in mouthwash and dentures as a potential preventative measure against these infections.

One of the problems that exists with silver nanoparticles is it can be toxic to even beneficial bacteria that break down substances in the mouth and gut so scientists hope to create solutions for the problem.

Researchers suggests that bacteria communicate by touch

Researchers suggests that bacteria communicate by touch | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
What if bacteria could talk to each other? What if they had a sense of touch? A new study by researchers at UC Santa Barbara suggests both, and theorizes that such cells may, in fact, need to communicate in order to perform certain functions.

The paper shows that bacteria expressing a contact––dependent growth inhibition system (CDI) can inhibit bacteria without such a system only if the target bacteria have CysK, a metabolic enzyme required for synthesis of the amino acid cysteine. CysK is shown to bind to the CDI toxin –– an enzyme that breaks RNA ó and activate it.

For a cell system typically thought of as existing only to kill other bacteria –– as CDIs have largely been –– the results are surprising, said Hayes, because they suggest that a CDI+ inhibitor cell has to get permission from its target in order to do the job.

"This is basically the inhibitor cell asking the target cell, 'Can I please inhibit you?'" he explained. "It makes no sense. Why add an extra layer of complexity? Why add a permissive factor? That's an unusual finding.

My comment:

There are many things about bacteria that we still have absolutely no understanding of ... all we seem to think about is how to best kill them.

MMR doctor John Walker-Smith wins High Court appeal

MMR doctor John Walker-Smith wins High Court appeal | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
An eminent doctor was celebrating a dramatic victory today after the High Court ruled that a decision to strike him off over the MMR controversy was unlawful.

Today the GMC suffered a serious blow when Mr Justice Mitting, sitting in London, ruled the verdict and the decision to strike off could not stand.

The judge criticised the disciplinary panel's "inadequate and superficial reasoning and, in a number of instances, a wrong conclusion".

The judge said: "It would be a misfortune if this were to happen again."

He urged that in future such cases should be "chaired by someone with judicial experience".

Transparency Launches as Linux of Drug Development | Xconomy

Transparency Launches as Linux of Drug Development | Xconomy | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

When Tomasz Sablinski was working in pharmaceutical R&D, he was often frustrated by the demand for secrecy in the clinical trials process---a misdirected effort, he says, to keep competitors in the dark about what drug companies were up to. “The price you pay when you hide what you’re doing is you only get feedback from a precious few people,” he says. “There is very little new blood in the ideation process.”

So in late January, Sablinski and his company, Transparency Life Sciences, rolled out the beta version of a virtual community of physicians, scientists, and patients whose input is helping the company develop three drugs. The site (transparencyls.com), which is being managed by a handful of staff members in New York City and Boston, has only been live for a few weeks. But it has already attracted about 30 patients, who have been actively trading notes about their experiences and making suggestions for clinical trials, Sablinski says.

Sablinski hopes the population of registered users will balloon in the coming weeks, when Transparency begins reaching out to patient advocacy groups in the disease areas it’s working in: multiple sclerosis, peripheral vascular disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. “What we’re trying to do is channel this tremendous Web energy into helping us create experiments that will answer the right questions,” Sablinski says.

Big Pharma’s Gaming of Medical Studies: How Science Is Twisted and Undermined | Gaia Health | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

The concept of RDBPC (randomized, double-blind placebo controlled) trials was never truly studied to determine how effective it is. Nonetheless, their use is righteously declared the gold standard, the type of trial that must be performed before any medical treatment can be declared effective or safe. If medicine were truly science-based, wouldn’t the quality of the gold standard be put to the test?

Research Proves That DNA Is Reprogrammed by Words and Frequencies...

The Russian biophysicist and molecular biologist Pjotr Garjajev and his colleagues also explored the vibrational behavior of the DNA. The bottom line was: “Living chromosomes function just like solitonic/holographic computers using the endogenous DNA laser radiation.” This means that they managed for example to modulate certain frequency patterns onto a laser ray and with it influenced the DNA frequency and thus the genetic information itself. Since the basic structure of DNA-alkaline pairs and of language (as explained earlier) are of the same structure, no DNA decoding is necessary.

One can simply use words and sentences of the human language! This, too, was experimentally proven! Living DNA substance (in living tissue, not in vitro) will always react to language-modulated laser rays and even to radio waves, if the proper frequencies are being used.

The non-profit Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease states that current vaccine purification processes cannot completely filter all foreign DNA plasmids used in the process of manufacturing the MMR II vaccine. Therefore, some foreign DNA fragments end up being injected into infants.

(Comment:) Those foreign DNA fragments then compete with the body's own DNA for scarce resources, apparently leading to autism and other severe illnesses, according to Dr. Hanan Polanski.

WHY OUR WORLD IS ELECTROPOLLUTED

WHY OUR WORLD IS ELECTROPOLLUTED | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
Today, it’s World War II radar technology that has been harnessed to create a near universal addiction and worldwide dependence on telecommunications. Anything that facilitates and enhances the human ability to communicate plugs into a powerful primal urge.

We can say no to radiation and chemotherapy, and we can do perfectly well without pesticides – but we cannot do without telephones, the internet, or electricity. Millions of people use cell phones as if they were an indispensable body part; thousands of households use microwave ovens daily, unaware that they are ruining the nutrients in their food; well-meaning parents irradiate their infants with baby monitors; and most of us are zapped continuously by smart meters. All things wireless have taken the world by storm, supposedly serving progress.

New ‘Hope’ to Cure Liver Disease Exposes Modern Medicine’s Fundamental Error

New ‘Hope’ to Cure Liver Disease Exposes Modern Medicine’s Fundamental Error | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

The study’s authors found that a diseased liver slows or stops creating new hepatocytes, instead producing more bile ducts. They’ve decided that this is not what the liver should be doing, and have managed to force genes to alter their behavior so that they revert to the normal production of hepatocytes. They believe that doing so will make the liver healthy again.

The authors are ignoring the context: that the liver responds to excess toxins by trying to build more paths for bile excretion. An organism cannot survive when the toxic load is too great. Therefore, the liver sacrifices one function for the more immediately critical one. It stops reproducing hepatocytes and uses the resources saved to create bile ducts. The liver is creating more pathways for removal of toxins...

Walnuts fight prostate cancer

Walnuts fight prostate cancer | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
Walnuts are a rich plant source of omega-3s, the fatty acids also found in cold water fish like salmon. Omega-3s are known to lower the risk of a host of health problems from depression to heart disease. Walnuts are also loaded with gamma tocopherol (a form of vitamin E), phytochemicals known as polyphenols, and antioxidants. Now, for the first time, scientists have reported that these nutrient-rich nuts have the ability to reduce the size and growth of prostate cancer.

"Walnuts should be part of a prostate-healthy diet," Paul Davis, Ph.D., who headed the study, said in a statement to the media. "They should be part of a balanced diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables."

According to the University of California-Davis scientists, research suggests that diet is among the most important factors in influencing a man's risk for developing prostate cancer. For example, there's evidence that eating tomatoes and drinking pomegranate juice may reduce the chance of ever having prostate cancer.

Forget Prescription Drugs: Two Glasses of Cranberry Juice Prevents Hardening of Arteries | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
Statins have severe adverse effects, yet they are standard method of treatment used to treat millions with hardening arteries. Health experts suggest a much easier and natural route...cranberries. Two glasses of cranberry juice a day protects against the development of hardening of the arteries, according to a new study by scientists at the Mayo Clinic and College of Medicine.

Cranberries have modest levels of vitamin C, dietary fiber and the essential dietary mineral, manganese, as well as a balanced profile of other essential micronutrients.

Previous research has also shown that cranberry juice helped relax blood vessels clogged with high blood cholesterol and narrowed by atherosclerosis, according to a study by researchers at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine.

Big Pharma’s Gaming of Medical Studies: Twisted Statistics and How to Spot Them

Big Pharma’s Gaming of Medical Studies: Twisted Statistics and How to Spot Them | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

Medical trials are routinely gamed by manipulating statistics. The old adage about lies, damned lies, and statistics was never more true than in modern drug studies.

It isn’t necessary to have a deep understanding of statistics to comprehend some of the tricks being used. This article discusses some of them in plain English. If you spot them in the report of a study, it’s a good indication that the results are being misrepresented by the authors of the study itself.

Modern news media virtually never examines the studies themselves. Not even medical outlets bother. They simply spew the conclusions claimed by the researchers and the press releases written for them.

Would We Have Drugged Up Einstein? How Anti-Authoritarianism Is Deemed a Mental Health Problem | Personal Health | AlterNet

Would We Have Drugged Up Einstein? How Anti-Authoritarianism Is Deemed a Mental Health Problem | Personal Health | AlterNet | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

According to Dr Bruce Levine in this article,

"Albert Einstein, as a youth, would have likely received an ADHD diagnosis, and maybe an ODD one as well. Albert didn't pay attention to his teachers, failed his college entrance examinations twice, and had difficulty holding jobs."

"After he did enter college, one professor told Einstein, “You have one fault; one can’t tell you anything.” The very characteristics of Einstein that upset authorities so much were exactly the ones that allowed him to excel."

"Americans have been increasingly socialized to equate inattention, anger, anxiety, and immobilizing despair with a medical condition, and to seek medical treatment rather than political remedies.

What better way to maintain the status quo than to view inattention, anger, anxiety, and depression as biochemical problems of those who are mentally ill rather than normal reactions to an increasingly authoritarian society?"

The real answer to this problem is to change the current corrupt authoritarian system to a more open system where people can engage in critical thinking and express their views and be allowed to have those views published in an open media without being labelled as 'mentally ill'.

Scientists shocked to find antibiotics alleviate symptoms of schizophrenia | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
A cheap antibiotic normally prescribed to teenagers for acne is to be tested as a treatment to alleviate the symptoms of psychosis in patients with schizophrenia, in a trial that could advance scientific understanding of the causes of mental illness.

The chance observation caused researchers to test the drug in patients with schizophrenia around the world. Trials in Israel, Pakistan and Brazil have shown significant improvement in patients treated with the drug.

Scientists believe that schizophrenia and other mental illnesses including depression and Alzheimer's disease may result from inflammatory processes in the brain. Minocycline has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects which they believe could account for the positive findings.
