He knows why North Carolina has virtually the nation's worst record on all matters connected with births. Ignorance, poverty, insanitation, disease, poor hospital facilities, little if any prenatal care -- all these contribute to infant and maternal mortality rates that are truly appalling.

According to Zein Hamad, dietician with the Palestinian Ministry of Education, certain health problems, such as anemia — which significantly handicaps children’s learning ability — and obesity, have dramatically reduced in the area since the women started their work. The anemia rate has plummeted from one-quarter of all children, to just a handful.

The idea that violence against women can be part of “God’s plan” raised its ugly head recently in the presidential campaign. Rick Santorum, the most religiously conservative candidate in the GOP field and the current front-runner. explained his religious opposition to abortion even in the case of rape or incest, because “in the sense of rape” this is a “gift” of God, albeit “a gift in a very broken way.” Thus, women and girls who are raped and become pregnant should “accept what God has given to you.” ...?
