The road to reducing dementia onset and prevalence: are diet and physical activity interventions worth investing in?

The road to reducing dementia onset and prevalence: are diet and physical activity interventions worth investing in? | Health in a digital age | Scoop.it

Authored by Australian National University PhD candidate and Deeble Summer Scholar Kimberly Ashby-Mitchell, the brief examines the evidence surrounding dementia onset and the role diet and physical activity interventions might have in promoting brain health.

In Australia, deaths as a result of dementia have now taken over cerebrovascular disease as the second leading cause of death. At present, over a quarter million Australians suffer from dementia and projected estimates indicate that the figure can reach a high of nearly one million by 2050.

Mental health in rural and remote AustraIia

Mental health in rural and remote AustraIia | Health in a digital age | Scoop.it

Rates of mental illness do not vary much across the country - this infographic shows that about 20 per cent of Australians had a mental health problem in the past 12 months. However Medicare expenditure per person is much lower in rural and remote areas. Tragically, suicide rates are also higher in rural and remote areas than they are in major cities.
