Why I Don't Want My Kids to Succeed

Why I Don't Want My Kids to Succeed | Life in the 21st Century | Scoop.it

"We need to redefine success beyond money and power to include well-being, wisdom, wonder and giving back." Arianna Huffington, the namesake of The Huffington Post, spoke these words at a recent stop to talk about her new book,Thrive.

Amy Melendez's curator insight, August 24, 2014 10:12 AM

From the article:

Despite all that we know about the toxic effects of stress, we continue to mount massive pressure on our families and especially our kids. We jockey to get our toddlers into feeder schools. High schoolers overload their calendars hoping to beef up their resumes with admissions bait. We scramble to shuttle our kids between extracurricular activities, tutoring and social events to help them "succeed." In the wake of this madness, we cut every corner to save time nourishing our families. Who has time to cook? So we outsource. We buy "all-natural" prepared meals, we grab quick on-the-go snacks and we eat in our cars. We have been lulled into thinking these are healthy choices. But they are not. Like the frog in boiling water, we've slowly let industrial food companies take over the nourishment of our families. And we're paying for it in skyrocketing rates of obesity and illness. A steep toll to pay on the road to "success."

The Aging Brain Needs "REST" (Gene Regulator) - BioScienceTechnology

The Aging Brain Needs "REST" (Gene Regulator) - BioScienceTechnology | Life in the 21st Century | Scoop.it

Photo caption: "A new study shows that a gene regulator called REST, dormant in the brains of young people (left), switches on in normal aging brains (center) to protect against various stresses, including abnormal proteins associated with neurodegenerative diseases. REST is lost in critical brain regions of people with Alzheimer’s (right). (Source: Yankner Lab)"

"Why do neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s affect only the elderly? More than a century of research into the causes of dementia has focused on the clumps and tangles of abnormal proteins that appear in the brains of people with neurodegenerative diseases. However, scientists know that at least one piece of the puzzle has been missing because some people with these abnormal protein clumps show few or no signs of cognitive decline...."

How Stuff Robs Us of Those We Love the Most

How Stuff Robs Us of Those We Love the Most | Life in the 21st Century | Scoop.it
The truth is when you learn to let go, you don't live with less at all. You make room for the things that matter the most, the things that aren't even "things" at all.
Amy Melendez's insight:

Powerful post by Jeff Goins of goinswriter.com

From the post:

Looking back through the glass window inside the messy house, I saw a reflection of myself holding my son. That was on one side of the glass. On the other was my smart phone, my busy life that was messy and complicated and sometimes too stressful to take.

I knew I had to make a choice: maintain the busyness while sacrificing my sanity and ability to hold onto those I loved the most — or learn to let go.

I’m pretty sure it was Leslie Sansone who said, “The best workout is the one you’ll do.” If the workout you’ll do is one that is born of an active past-time that you enjoy, all the better – especially since many of those options can also be family activities. If you can teach your kids at a young age to enjoy being active, they’re more likely to live a healthier, active lifestyle as adults.

Great story and message:

“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.” ― Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Nowadays, we are far removed from the ’80s, when there was no Internet, instant messaging or Skype phone calls. This is affecting all of us and in particular the younger generation which has grown accustomed to being bombarded with fast-turnover information; they filter it instantly without paying much attention to its meaning.

Our whole society is becoming instantaneous, just like instant messaging, instant photography, instant news, instant coffee and so forth. We are unwilling to decipher any complicated messages, wanting things simple and fast. Depth and nuance are out the window.

The biggest weakness of today’s generation is impatience...

One Pound of Fat Versus One Pound of Muscle: Clearing up the Misconceptions

One Pound of Fat Versus One Pound of Muscle: Clearing up the Misconceptions | Life in the 21st Century | Scoop.it

By Bamboo Fitness
Debunking the myth

"Have you ever heard the saying, “Muscle weighs more than fat?” Perhaps at some point in your life you were working your butt off in the gym in an attempt to lose weight. During this time, you hopped onto the scale weekly, sometimes even daily. Some days were better than others. Sometimes the numbers on the scale decreased, but to your dismay, this wasn’t always the case. Some weigh-ins showed that the scale read higher than your starting weight. Other days the scale wouldn’t budge. This would depress and sadden you. To soothe your worries and soften the blow of the scale, perhaps a family member, friend, personal trainer, or doctor told you that you shouldn’t freak out because the scale is showing that there has been a gain in muscle and that “muscle weighs more than fat.” Maybe you relaxed after hearing this. Maybe you were skeptical of this comment."...

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, August 7, 2014 6:44 PM

There are two intertwined definitions of education and only one is included here. Educare is leading students out of child. Educere is allowing students to gain control over their learning and realizing they have support when needed. We have eliminated the latter replacing it with the instrumental version called learning which is what School is about.
