When you're pregnant, you may feel you have the perfect excuse to take time off from the gym. But this couldn't be further from the truth.

"No one would think of running a marathon without training for it, and it always astounds me when women try to go through labor and delivery without training," said Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, clinical professor in the department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the Yale School of Medicine. "I've run plenty of half-marathons, and labor was tougher than that."

Still, exercise regimes can't and shouldn't stay the same when you're pregnant — and these experts will tell you what you should and shouldn't do.

“Anything but science.” I’m not sure when that became my mantra. Maybe it was in ninth grade, in Earth Science, when the belligerent varsity soccer coach/teacher loomed over me as I stared through the stereoscopic lenses at the aerial topographic photograph. Lacking depth perception, I couldn’t see a single three dimensional image. He breathed heavily through his nose in disgust. Maybe it was in tenth grade, dissecting the grasshopper, when the messy anatomy of the formaldehyde-drenched creature looked nothing like the drawings I was supposed to label. If I couldn’t see and identify the parts in the workbook, I would fail the lab portion of that class. I had to go home and look it up, filling the blanks in from more flat drawings. Maybe it was in eleventh grade, when I couldn’t understand the path of electricity in physics outlined on the written sheet, failed to follow the instructions properly, and burned up the fuse on the ammeter. I had to copy the answers to that worksheet from my lab partner. If there is a subject that makes my body tense with anxiety before my eyes glass over in self-defensive dismissal, it is science.

When Bob and I decided to homeschool, we made a deal. He was teaching science. Or, in his absence, my dad, the animal scientist, would handle it. I would handle everything else.

But that’s not how things have been going these past few weeks. Our intern went back to school, and Bob cannot predictably get a day off to handle science instruction. Last week he quickly covered the textbook content of Saoirse’s lesson, then pushed the rest aside. “She needs to go to a pond and study water samples and aquatic life,” he mentioned in passing. “I need to move fence. It’s just not happening.” He took Ula birding quickly in the early morning, then headed down to the farm. Saoirse was left with her textbook to finish out her lesson.

Saoirse is a sponge about everything she reads. I knew that Bob’s need to rely on

Do you have a decisive marriage?

New research shows that how thoughtfully couples make decisions can have a lasting effect on the quality of their romantic relationships. Couples who are decisive before marriage — intentionally defining their relationships, living together and planning a wedding — appear to have better marriages than couples who simply let inertia carry them through major transitions.

“Making decisions and talking things through with partners is important,” said Galena K. Rhoades, a relationship researcher at the University of Denver and co-author of the report. “When you make an intentional decision, you are more likely to follow through on that.”

While the finding may seem obvious, the reality is that many couples avoid real decision-making. Many couples living together, for instance, did not sit down and talk about cohabitation. Often one partner had begun spending more time at the other’s home, or a lease expired, forcing the couple to formalize a living arrangement.

“Couples who slide through their relationship transitions have poorer marital quality than those who make intentional decisions about major milestones,” Dr. Rhoades and her colleagues wrote.

New research from Consumer Reports shows that pregnant women should avoid all tuna, contrary to the Food and Drug Administration's description of light canned tuna as a fish "lower in mercury."

"Tuna happens to be one of the fish that can be very high in mercury, and some types of tuna have higher levels than others," Jean Halloran, Director of Food Policy Initiative at Consumer Reports told The Huffington Post. "The type that tends to get used in sushi is often very high, but even canned light tuna, which tends to average pretty low levels and is generally one of the safer fish to eat, occasionally has these spikes of high levels of mercury."

Because pregnant woman can't tell which individual cans may have higher levels of tuna, Consumer Reports recommends that pregnant women simply skip all tuna throughout their entire pregnancy.

Last week, a woman’s holiday photo went viral as she revealed her colostomy bag as she posed in her bikini.

And fellow Crohn's sufferer Jessica Grossman is adopting the same body confidence tacti through her popular blopg.

Jessica, from Ontario in Canada, was diagnosed with Crohn's disease when she was eight years old.

Now 24, she has been a trailblazing campaigner for women with ostomies, inspiring them to embrace their ‘second chance at life’ through her initiative Uncover Ostomy.

 

Jessica’s childhood was spent in and out of hospital, with overpowering medications and extreme diets as she battled the illness.

“Eventually, I turned 13 and found myself still extremely sick, in an immense amount of pain, and not getting any better. I was weak, I was tired, and I was isolated in a hospital bed," she told Independent.ie.

A surgeon told her that if she did not undergo an operation to have her colon removed, she would die.

This was the first time Jessica heard the word 'ostomy', as the doctor explained that she would have an artificial opening in her organs after the procedure.

“After surgery and recovery, I went back to school.I told everyone what happened. I stood in front of the class and explained my surgery, and even showed them ostomy appliances. No one said anything bad (to my face, at least).”

ednesday that people with mild to moderate Parkinson’s disease may improve their motor function, mood, fatigue levels and more by taking regular aerobic walks.


“The results of our study suggest that walking may provide a safe and easily accessible way of improving the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and improve quality of life,” the lead author of the study said. Dr. Ergun Uc of the University of Iowa and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City and colleagues published their findings in the journal Neurology.

The researchers tracked 49 people ages 50 to 80 who had mild to moderate Parkinson’s disease. They wore electronic heart and walking speed monitors, and were asked to keep a diary of their exercise. Some walked in groups, others on their own. Their average walking speed was 2.9 mph.


Over six months, improvement came in aerobic fitness, as it would for most people. But the researchers also reported improvements -- outside of those from any medication -- in motor function, fatigue levels, mood, aspects of executive function and quality of life.

If only people stopped thinking about exercise and just 'do it'.  It's only a matter of walking at a moderate pace for 30 mins a day, and your day pans out that much better. It isn't rocket science, the benefits far outweigh the detriments of snoozing that time away in the morning. So next time you roll over and check the clock in the morning, ask yourself this question, how well do I want to live my life?  Then get up and go for that walk.

In the event that I’m going to be out in the sun for much longer than my skin is used to, it is often easy enough to just put on a hat or shirt to shield my skin.

If none of these options are available, for instance, on a day at the beach in early summer before I’ve been in the sun much, I will very occasionally use natural sunscreen. I’m yet to use it this year, and hope not to at all, but I wanted to share my recipe so that if you are in the sun for extended periods of time this summer, you have a natural option.

This would also be a more natural alternative for really young children, those taking medication that increases sun burn risk, or those who burn very easily.

Just to clarify, even though this natural sunscreen smells great and is naturally moisturizing, I don’t recommend using it daily since the Vitamin D you get from the sun will be more beneficial in the long run!

Many of the ingredients in this recipe have a natural SPF but since this is a natural recipe and has not been tested by a regulatory organization, I can’t make any claims or even guesses as to the combined SPF. The individual ingredients that are naturally SPF are:

  • Almond Oil- SPF around 5
  • Coconut Oil- SPF 4-6
  • Zinc Oxide SPF 2-20 depending on how much used
  • Red Raspberry Seed Oil SPF 25-50
  • Carrot Seed Oil –  SPF 35-40
  • Shea Butter – SPF 4-6

Seeing our children suffer from a cough is no fun at all. However, coughs have their place in healing and should usually not be suppressed. If we prevent a cough from doing its part in recovery, we can set our child up for a much more serious illness. What starts out as a simple cold could quickly turn into bronchitis or pnemonia if mucous is allowed to settle in the chest.

At times, a cough can interfere with recovery when it causes severe irritation and prevents our child from getting adequate rest. We can ease our child’s discomfort while still allowing a cough to do its job.

Soothing herbs and honey protect the throat from dryness and irritation, but don’t “turn off” the brain’s response to cough like some cough remedies do. Propping a child slightly helps to prevent the infection from settling in the lungs. Steam, poultices, and chest rub salves help to break up the chest congestion and make our child feel better fast.

Vermont is one of four states that appropriated no money for breast and cervical cancer screening programs in 2013 or 2014, according to recent report.

The state, however, is still performing the screenings through the Ladies First program for underinsured or underinsured women, according to Nicole Lukas of the Vermont Department of Health.

The program is funded by a federal grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which requires a state match. Vermont meets that requirement by paying providers the Medicare Part B rate for participants’ cancer screenings.

As a result, the state doesn’t need a separate appropriation to pay for the program. The CDC makes similar grants to programs in every state through the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

The report was authored by the American Cancer Society’s advocacy arm, the Cancer Action Network, which released state-by-state report cards this week that show Vermont earning good overall marks, but lagging in state support for women’s cancer screenings and physical education requirements.

Nobody likes pesky critters running around their garden. That's exactly why there are currently more than 17,000 pesticide products for agricultural and nonagricultural use on the market, according to Rodale Institute.

In recent years pesticides have been linked to causing damage to human eyes, skin, nervous systems and more. The dangers of pesticides are exactly what caused the Children's Cancer Recovery Foundation to create the Toxic Free Kids initiative.

According to Greg Anderson, founder and CEO of the Cancer Recovery Group of Charities, Toxic Free Kids was created in 2009.

"It was a response to a challenge given to us by the parents of a boy who died from a neuroblastoma, a type of brain cancer," explains Anderson. "They felt fertilizers in their orchard business was the cause of their son's death."

Learning more about the dangers of pesticides became priority for Toxic Free Kids. The initiative suggests using biodegradable liquid soap, water and lemon or orange juice as a homemade alternative to a commercial pesticide.

Pesticides are designed to kill unwanted garden visitors such as bugs and weeds. Though effectively killing off pests with harsh chemicals, pesticides also pose risks to humans, Smallwood says.

Stromboli basically is a pizza rolled up into a loaf and baked. Really, it’s as simple as that.

I like to fill mine with smear of pizza sauce {although adding the sauce is not considered authentic, but who gives a care?} then I add layers of three kinds of meat and lots of mozzarella cheese. Truthfully you could stuff this with just about anything and call it good… errr stromboli. I mean, sausage, peppers and onions… you name it. The sky is the limit my friends.

In fact, that may be a post in the near future.

Besides being super versatile, what’s cool about stromboli is that it can be lunch, dinner or a yummy appetizer at your next party. Just be sure to serve it up with a bowl of the warm homemade pizza sauce for dunking, you know… to make the whole experience complete.

A 2014 Oxford Economics Assessment of Paid Time Off in the U.S. showed 42% of employees with paid time off finished the year with unused days, leaving an average of 8.1 days unused.

Small business owners are especially bad at taking time away. According to the 2013 Sage Reinvention of Small Business Study, 43% of small business owners are taking less vacation time than five years ago.


The fact that we don't use all of our vacation time isn’t all that surprising. After all, getting away for a few days or weeks can be overwhelming when it feels like stepping away from the office will create a painful backlog of work when you return.
