What are your thoughts - should so-called 'wearables' be banned? If so, why? I for one think that a knee-jerk reaction to ban them without due consideration would reinforce the perception held by some that our profession is made up of killjoys, but that's just my view. Over to you...

HSE consults on self employed HSW Act exemption | Health and Safety at Work

HSE consults on self employed HSW Act exemption | Health and Safety at Work | Health and safety at work | Scoop.it
The HSE has launched a consultation on the proposed exemption of some self employed people from health and safety law. The consultative document includes the list of “prescribed” activities — those which will still be covered by Section 3(2) of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
The exemption was proposed by Professor Ragnar Löfstedt in his 2011 report for the government, Reclaiming Health and Safety for All.
He suggested the requirement for self-employed people in low risk occupations to comply with health and safety legislation could be removed where their activities posed no risk to others, as it is in Germany.

I cannot help thinking that this will make things more complicated, not less.

Health and Safety officer told to "keep his nose out" of Hillsborough a year before disaster

Health and Safety officer told to "keep his nose out" of Hillsborough a year before disaster | Health and safety at work | Scoop.it
A health and safety expert was told by his bosses to "keep his nose out" of safety concerns at Hillsborough a year before the disaster killed 96 Liverpool fans, a jury heard today.

Paul Jackson was a health and safety officer with Sheffield City Council's Environmental Protection Unit at the time of the tragedy on April 15, 1989.

But today Mr Jackson told the jury hearing the inquests into the deaths, he had been made aware of safety concerns over the crush barriers, their height and spacings, on the terraces at Hillsborough 12 months before the disaster.

One crash barrier gave way as 96 fans were crushed to death on the Leppings Lane terrace of Sheffield Wednesday's ground as Liverpool FC took on Nottingham Forest at the start of the FA Cup semi-final.
Griffin Safety's insight:

Yet another twist in the Hillsborough story.
