THE IMPORTANCE OF MACROS:

  • Carbohydrates: The brain, kidneys, muscles and heart all need carbohydrates to function properly. Carbohydrates aid in the synthesis of certain amino acids. Fats can only be properly metabolized when carbs are present. All of our tissues have the ability to use the simple carbohydrate glucose as energy. When the body uses carbohydrates for energy, it can use other macronutrients (like protein) for muscle growth and strength.
  • Protein: Enzymes, used for digestion and your immune system, are made of protein. Some essential hormones require protein to be produced. Proteins may be used as a source of energy when carbohydrates are not available. It  is the major constituent of most cells, making up more than 50% of the dry weight of your body. It is  used to produce new tissues for growth and tissue repair.
  • Lipids (Fats): Lipids provide  cushioning for organs and insulation for your body. They control maintenance of cellular membranes. Fats are also used as a high density energy source.

Nature as an extremely effective treatment intervention!

Henry David Thoreau, writing inThe Atlantic in June 1862, said, "I think that I cannot preserve my health and spirits, unless I spend four hours a day at least -- and it is commonly more than that -- sauntering through the woods and over the hills and fields, absolutely free from all worldly engagements."

Top 10 Healthy Yet Cheap Organic Foods

Top 10 Healthy Yet Cheap Organic Foods | Health and Fitness | Scoop.it

Cheap organic foods? In the face of global economic struggle, the issue of personal finance is at the heart of the average consumer. But do you really have to shed an exorbitant amount of your money to purchase organic foods over conventional?

My thoughts:

This article does an excellent job of proving that you do not have to break the bank in order to stay healthy. These days the proce of groceries are on the rise and it can be difficult to be picky about the nutritional value of what you put into your mouth. In this article, organic foods are the focus. Allthough I had never considered organic foods before, this article introduced me to a few! I am now very interested in eating brown rice instead of white rice, and making sure the produce I eat is organic as well.

Kate Killingsworth's curator insight, March 28, 2013 1:13 PM

Organic foods can be cheap and much better for you! when you think about how much of one thing you will use it adds up to a cheap, and healthy meal. spending a little under $40 a week isn't ideal for a college student but I can always buy in bulk on one week to save some for the next. It would also be beneficial to keep some of these items as snacks on the go so that when I get hungry I grab something organic and healthy as opposed to something unhealthy.

Excerpt fromThe 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth

By Jonny Bowden

According to C. Leigh Broadhurst, PhD, in her excellent book on diabetes, the best way to use cinnamon to help lower blood sugar and improve type 2 diabetes is to put 3 rounded tablespoons of ground cinnamon and 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of baking sodea (less if sodium is a problem for you) in a 32-ounce (quart) canning jar. Fill the jar with boiling water and let it steep at room temperature till it's cool. Strain or decant the liquid, discard the grounds, put a lid on the jar, and stick it in the fridge. Drink one 8-ounce cup of the tea four times per dy. After one to three weeks you can drop down to one or two cups a day. Type 1 diabetics can use it too, but should start with only one or two cups per day and increase by one cup per week, monitoring blood sugar closely.

Food Fraud: 10 Counterfeit Products We Commonly Consume

Food Fraud: 10 Counterfeit Products We Commonly Consume | Health and Fitness | Scoop.it

Coffee, olive oil and fish are just some of the adulterated and intentionally mislabeled foods regularly passed off as something they’re not.

In a country where we have relatively strict labeling regulations, many food manufacturers still manage to swindle shoppers by adding fillers or diluting the real deal with less expensive ingredients, without the knowledge of the consumer. And in fact, it’s become so prevalent that the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, a nonprofit that sets standards used by the FDA, set up a database to track the infractions. Called the Food Fraud Database (FFD), it describes food fraud as the "deliberate substitution, addition, tampering or misrepresentation of food, food ingredients or food packaging, or false or misleading statements made about a product for economic gain." It has a shocking number of entries.
