72% of Consumers Are Willing To See A Doctor Via Telehealth Video Conferencing

72% of Consumers Are Willing To See A Doctor Via Telehealth Video Conferencing | Health and Fitness | Scoop.it

72% of consumers across the eight countries are willing to see a doctor via telehealth video conferencing for non-urgent appointments, according to Intel survey.

The study, “Intel Healthcare Innovation Barometer” was conducted across eight countries by Penn Schoen Berland in Brazil, China, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan and the United States from July 28 to Aug. 15, 2013 among a representative sample of 12,000 adults ages 18 and older.

The findings concludes that most people are optimistic about technology innovations advancing healthcare, are open to sharing healthcare information for the greater good and receptive to using sensors for personalized care.
As the technology of remote patient monitoring solutions and mobile health applications improve, consumers now have the ability to connect with their providers in a variety of ways to embrace new behaviors

Other key findings of the Intel Healthcare Innovation Barometer include:

Improving Personal Care and Self-Monitoring with Technology

Sixty-six percent of people say they would prefer a personalized healthcare regimen designed specifically for them based on their genetic profile or biology.Fifty-three percent of people say they would trust a test they personally administered as much or more than if performed by a doctor.

Sharing Anonymous Digital Health Records for the Common Good

People are more willing to anonymously share their health records or genetic information than their banking information or phone records.More than three-quarters (76 percent) of respondents over the age of 55 would be willing to anonymously share results of lab tests or health monitoring to contribute to research databases compared with 64 percent of millennials.India is the country most willing to share healthcare information to aid innovation.

Emerging Technology Tools for Increased In-Home Health Management

Half of those surveyed would trust a diagnosis delivered via video conference from their doctor.Seventy-two percent are receptive to communication technologies that allow them to remotely connect to their doctor. The innovation least likely to be incorporated by the global population is a robot performing surgery.Almost half of respondents (43 percent) globally would trust themselves to monitor their own blood pressure and other basic vitals.

Can I use yoga for weight loss? - Mayo Clinic

Can I use yoga for weight loss? - Mayo Clinic | Health and Fitness | Scoop.it

While any kind of exercise or movement is probably going to be good for health, fitness, and weight management, yoga is not necessarily "good" for weight "loss".

There are many reasons for this, and this article goes into the whys and wherefores as to yoga not being your first choice of exercise if your goal is weight loss.

Donovan Baldwin's insight:

There are many health benefits of exercise, including weight loss, but, it has to be the right exercise, done regularly, and combined with a sensible eating plan.

There are many benefits of yoga, including what you get from many other forms of exercise, and, the mental and emotional benefits which may help you control your lifestyle choices...including eating.

However, on a calorie burning basis, aerobic activity appears to be a better exercise choice for weight loss.

Millions of people bend and twist their bodies for Yoga Day

Millions of people bend and twist their bodies for Yoga Day | Health and Fitness | Scoop.it

Millions of yoga enthusiasts across the world bent and twisted their bodies in complex and simple postures Sunday (June 21) to mark International Yoga Day.

Even Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spread his mat among rows of people, which included his Cabinet members and foreign diplomats, on New Delhi’s main thoroughfare, which was transformed into a sprawling exercise ground.

Around the world, thousands of people dressed in white sat on yellow mats under the Eiffel Tower, and similar events were held in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Beijing, Manila and other places.

Modi had lobbied the U.N. to declare June 21 as the first International Yoga Day.

Donovan Baldwin's insight:

People think of yoga as being some exotic form of exercise program. Actually, it is a multi-faceted way that almost anyone can improve their mental and physical health.

One Twin Exercises, the Other Doesn't

One Twin Exercises, the Other Doesn't | Health and Fitness | Scoop.it

"Identical twins who shared the same sports and other physical activities as youngsters but different exercise habits as adults soon developed quite different bodies and brains, a new study from Finland found..."

"...It turned out that these genetically identical twins looked surprisingly different beneath the skin and skull. The sedentary twins had lower endurance capacities, higher body fat percentages, and signs of insulin resistance, signaling the onset of metabolic problems. (Interestingly, the twins tended to have very similar diets, whatever their workout routines, so food choices were unlikely to have contributed to health differences.)

The twins’ brains also were unalike. The active twins had significantly more grey matter than the sedentary twins, especially in areas of the brain involved in motor control and coordination.

Presumably, all of these differences in the young men’s bodies and brains had developed during their few, brief years of divergent workouts, underscoring how rapidly and robustly exercising — or not — can affect health, said Dr. Urho Kujala, a professor of sports and exercise medicine at the University of Jyvaskyla who oversaw the study."

Donovan Baldwin's insight:

I mentioned the other day that exercise, despite being studied extensively in groups, with conclusions being reached about exercise in general, exercise was a very personal thing. Even in twins, the individuality of choice and result is evident. Learn more about exercise at http://nodiet4me.com/exercise/ .

Medicare: Where Does U.S. Rank in Senior Health?

Medicare: Where Does U.S. Rank in Senior Health? | Health and Fitness | Scoop.it

Seniors in the United States, which make up the core population which is covered by Medicare, consider themselves to be in good health. This is based on the results of studies of self-reported health among seniors in several countries.

However, this does not mean that senior health actually is the best in the U.S. In fact, the United States is NOT at the top of the list when several factors are taken into consideration.

Senior health is not just about physical condition and medical care. It encompasses financial and emotional well-being, for example.

When viewed with a wider lens, U.S. seniors actually come in 8th in this study. So what's going on with senior health in the U.S.

Donovan Baldwin's insight:

While we tend to view "health" as having to do with fitness, exercise, and diet, many other factors can become intertwined. Financial health, for example, can have a lot to do with physical, mental, and emotional health.

Exercise is still a key factor, however. you can learn more about exercise at http://nodiet4me.com/exercise/ .

Too Old to Exercise? What Over-50 Athletes Can Teach Us About Fitness

Too Old to Exercise? What Over-50 Athletes Can Teach Us About Fitness | Health and Fitness | Scoop.it
Baby boomers are more active than ever, but need be smart about it.

More of us older folk, aged between 51 and 70, are engaged in regular physical exercise than any previous generation. This is true particularly in endurance events like marathon and ultra-marathon running. In the US, alone, about 20 per cent of all ultra-distance race finishers last year were 50 and over.

Donovan Baldwin's insight:

There's nothing wrong with senior exercise programs, as long as they are well thought out, and planned with the individual in mind. You could get away with a lot when you were younger, but, once you achieve "senior" status, and, I don't mean high school, you can't just take an exercise book off the shelf and copy some exercise author's fitness plan.

The more you know about exercise, and yourself, the better off you will be and the more health benefits of exercise you will enjoy.
