The topic turned to the workouts that had helped Tom (not his real name) lose pounds, and a fellow in the audience said, “I’m confused. Should I stretch before or after I lift weights?”

 

Before the other trainer and I had time to open our mouths and say “After,” Tom answered “Definitely before.”

 

The other trainer and I just looked at each other.

 

Tom is absolutely wrong, but that’s what everyone used to believe—that stretching before you lift (or jog or whatever) was a great way to prepare for exercise and protect your muscles.

 

But the truth is the opposite...
