NIH approves strategic vision to transform National Library of Medicine - National Institutes of Health (press release)

Vision positions NLM as unifying force in biomedicine

Karen R. Harker's curator insight, July 15, 10:13 AM

Is anybody else worried about this plan?  It seems to be so data-oriented, and I worry that the principles of librarianship that would make this data not only available, but accessible, findable & usable, are being ignored.  To wit, "librar*" appears 30 times, 'access*'  appears 28, and 'avail*' 5; meanwhile, "data" appears 99, and "information" 67.

Library science is important to the dissemination of medical research, notably in the cataloging and classification of articles using the strong and robust Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and the NLM Classification.  But 'metadata' appears once, and 'taxon*' not at all.  The foundation of biomedical literature, PubMed, is mentioned 5 times, and the consumer-oriented site, MedlinePlus only 3 times.

Which leads me to my next concern - this vision appears to be stepping back from leading the consumer health information field and focusing solely (or nearly so) on research data.

So, am I in left field here?
