Social media: how does it really affect our mental health and well-being?

Social media: how does it really affect our mental health and well-being? | Heal the world | Scoop.it
Numerous studies have suggested that using social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter can affect mental health and well-being. We look at the evidence.
Ruth Obadia's insight:

Another study, from the University of California San Diego (UCSD), suggests that using social media may even spread happiness. The research team, led by James Fowler of the School of Medicine at UCSD, found that happy status updates encourage other users to post happy status updates themselves.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The shock waves are still reverberating from the bombshell announcement of the discovery of cosmology’s holy grail: telltale signature of ripples in the very fabric of space generated as it “inflated” during our cosmic origins.

The study was published in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience.

Ruth Obadia's insight:

In a new study, researchers led by Dolcos found that instead of concentrating on emotions related to a negative memory, thinking about the context, like a friend who was there, what the weather was like, or anything else non-emotional that was part of the memory, “rather effortlessly” takes your mind away from the unwanted emotions associated with that memory.

“Once you immerse yourself in other details, your mind will wander to something else entirely, and you won’t be focused on the negative emotions as much,” he said.

'Most of these elderly people have a simple need – not to be on their own'

'Most of these elderly people have a simple need – not to be on their own' | Heal the world | Scoop.it
For thousands of isolated older people whose families are far away and whose council help has been cut, innovative community schemes are tackling the 'generation strain' of loneliness (RT @SocietyGuardian: 'Most of these elderly people have a very...
Ruth Obadia's insight:

A "community connector", a trusted local person, is paid to spot the potentially lonely and to recruit older people with skills they want to share. One community connector put a "whittler", a carver, in touch with a formerly isolated man. They now regularly chat and carve walking sticks. "It's all about reciprocity," says Monica Walker, head of the centre.

Review of nurse training to 'bring back compassion'

Review of nurse training to 'bring back compassion' | Heal the world | Scoop.it

Nurses must learn to be more compassionate, ministers have said, as they announced a review of training and a drive to recruit older workers with more “life experience”.

Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, said changes were needed to tackle scandalous failings in care and ensure that treating patients with respect and dignity became the top priority of all staff.

The national review will examine the education and training of all nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants, before they qualify and throughout their career.

=========================

“The NHS stands for compassionate care or
it stands for nothing - and we know that
for many patients, compassionate nursing
makes all the difference.

Groundbreaking results bring new hope for those with spinal cord injury – NIH study
Ruth Obadia's insight:

“The fact that the brain is able to take advantage of the few connections that may be remaining, and then process this complicated visual, auditory, and perceptual information, is pretty amazing. It tells us that the information from the brain is getting to the right place in the spinal cord, so that the person can control, with fairly impressive accuracy, the nature of the movement,” said Edgerton.

Nicholas Kristoff's latest New York Times column was sad and moving.
Ruth Obadia's insight:

But it's possible, the scientists conclude, that forgiving and forgetting reinforce one another in the human mind. Even if forgiveness is effortful at first, people who manage it may be better at setting bitter thoughts aside, and this forgetting may in turn provide an effective coping strategy, enabling people to move on -- and ultimately to forgive in their hearts.
