Defining Paperless 2.0 - Edudemic

Defining Paperless 2.0 - Edudemic | Newington Professional Reading | Scoop.it
Yet, in order for educational technology to transcend its past patterns, paperless work will need to expand beyond the confines of an 8 ½ x11 mindset not just the 8 ½ x 11 page.

The Role Of Student Choice In Connected Classrooms - Edudemic

The Role Of Student Choice In Connected Classrooms - Edudemic | Newington Professional Reading | Scoop.it
With the influx of technology into connected classrooms, the role of student choice has become as important as ever.
Sean Corcoran's insight:

Great article on the improtance of student choice and how iPads help to facilitate this. "...if we give students an assignment that produces 25 copies of identical work, we’ve given a recipe, not a thought-provoking, opportunity for growth. When teachers give some props to the unknown, and task students to show their deep understanding of a subject or skill with the best tools available, you might say miracles happen. We should be a little less afraid of miracles." Great for CBL!

When To Put The Tech Away In Your 1:1 (or Any) Classroom - Edudemic

When To Put The Tech Away In Your 1:1 (or Any) Classroom - Edudemic | Newington Professional Reading | Scoop.it
Beth and Shawn take a look at the often-overlooked question of when to put the tech away in a classroom that has boatloads of electronics everywhere.
Sean Corcoran's insight:

"When I (Shawn) lectured more, it was very easy to end the class knowing that the students had shared a very similar experience together. When devices were added to my classroom, I had no guarantee that would happen. As we worked more individually and in small groups, I realized that I had eroded some of the community that I had prized so highly.  This created tension in the class and left me shaken. I  learned that I had to focus and find ways to build a better community and create shared values in smaller increments of time."

How to Create Effective Homework

How to Create Effective Homework | Newington Professional Reading | Scoop.it
Strategies on how to make time spent on homework as effective and helpful as possible.
Sean Corcoran's insight:

Good reflective questions for teachers. “Does this homework ask each student to practice something that the student hasn’t yet mastered? Does the student clearly see its purpose? When students are asked to repeat or rehearse something, does it require them to focus? Or can they do it without really paying attention?” If the homework meets these criteria, she said, then it falls into the desirable realm of deliberate practice."

Wayne Cox's comment, October 22, 2013 4:00 AM
The criteria for effective homework makes a lot of sense- however, if homework is not valued in the sense of marks, checking etc- then its value is drastically reduced and students begin to play the game of working out teachers that do or do not check homework.

How To Address Negative Student Behavior in 1:1 Classrooms - Edudemic

How To Address Negative Student Behavior in 1:1 Classrooms - Edudemic | Newington Professional Reading | Scoop.it
Looking at some negative student behaviors in 1:1 classrooms and how educators at many levels can address the issues.
Sean Corcoran's insight:

"Besides just documenting the positive aspects of using technology, schools also need to be on the lookout for the negatives. It’s still early in the one-to-one era, but a surprising number of schools are simply not prepared for the question of, “What do we do when things aren’t working quite right?” As classrooms change with the addition of technology, we need to celebrate the positives but also realistically deal with the distinct negatives that were not present before."
