For years, Finland has been the by-word for a successful education system, perched at the top of international league tables for literacy and numeracy.

So Finland is moving to no longer "teaching subjects" to "teaching topics". And "there will be a more collaborative approach, with pupils working in smaller groups to solve problems while improving their communication skills." Will others follow?

No one can improve if they don’t receive feedback, and specifically feedback that is given in such a way as to encourage growth. I believe everyone can improve and grow. My expectation is that we are all getting better at our craft. The quality of teaching won’t improve unless people know how they are going and how they are going to be supported to grow to the next level

What Finnish youth need more than before are more integrated knowledge and skills about real world issues, many argue. An integrated approach, based on lessons from some schools with longer experience of that, enhances teacher collaboration in schools and makes learning more meaningful to students."

We were doing this at the middle school I was working in 15 years ago. The purpose was not cost cutting, but teaching students responsibility and to take ownership for the space. Vandalism and graffiti was not a problem. It worked....
