National Novel Writing Month

National Novel Writing Month | HCS Learning Commons Newsletter | Scoop.it

Do you have a student who is inspired to write a novel or learn how to go about the writing process.  According to Wikipedea this is an annual internet-based creative writing project which challenges participants to write 50,000 words of a new novel between November 1 and 30. Despite its name it accepts entries from around the world.

The project started in July 1999 with just 21 participants, but by the 2010 event over 200,000 people took part – writing a total of over 2.8 billion words.[2]

Writers wishing to participate first register on the project's website, where they can post profiles and information about their novels, including synopsis and excerpts. Word counts are validated on the site, with writers submitting a copy of their novel for automatic counting. Municipal leaders and regional forums help connect local writers with one another for holding writing events and to provide encouragement. For more on the review on this website go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Novel_Writing_Month

Thanks for sharing Kari!!

Virtual Classroom to commemorate Remembrance Day

Virtual Classroom to commemorate Remembrance Day | HCS Learning Commons Newsletter | Scoop.it

What's daily life like for Canadian troops on the frontlines in Afghanistan? Members of the Royal 22e Regiment know—they were there, witnessing the complexity of the issues on the ground, and they help shed light on the little-understood experiences of the men and women who served in Afghanistan.

To mark Remembrance Day 2012, in partnership with the Canadian War Museum the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is offering students the rare opportunity to meet Royal 22e Regiment soldiers, in person or virtually, and to learn about their time in Afghanistan. These military men and women were the focus of the recent documentary The Van Doos in Afghanistan.Read more how to access this guide in the article from National Film Board of Canada.

Journal Writing – Unleashing the Writer Within

Journal Writing – Unleashing the Writer Within | HCS Learning Commons Newsletter | Scoop.it

The purpose of this article is to hit a nerve—a place deep down inside. You may or may not be aware of it, but I want to touch your journaling nerve. I’m going to poke and prod and help you find the writer within, and the writer within your child. If you don’t like to write or don’t like the methods or curriculum you’ve tried, I hope to persuade you that family journaling can be fun and rewarding. And if you already write with or about your family, I hope to encourage you to continue because “now” is the time to record your life experiences while they’re happening.  Heart of the Matter online.
