The government of Oman is shaping the employment market in new ways that will influence the day to day working life of Omani citizens and residents.  January 2013 saw the implementation of an annual minimum three per cent pay rise for nationals and this will be followed in July 201three with two initiatives to aid nationalisation of the private sector: a minimum wage of OMR three25 and a cap on the proportion of foreign workers.

The minimum salary increase for Omani nationals has been the main talking point for private organisations in the country this past week. The new minimum which is effective as of 1st July 2013 is the second minimum wage increase in the Sultanate in the last 18 months. The latest announcement is targeted at the private sector and is almost a 60 per cent increase on the previous minimum of OMR 200 to a gross monthly salary of OMR 325.

Generous bonus payouts in Kuwait but attrition highest

Hay Group released its annual compensation and benefits report at a briefing in Kuwait this week. The consultancy reports a steady 4.5 per cent average pay rise in 2012 and generous bonuses especially from Kuwait’s prime sectors of oil and gas.
