Here's why the Internet works, "... because open standards allow every network to connect to every other network.  (So far...)   This is what makes it possible for anyone to create content, offer services, and sell products without requiring permission from a central authority.

It levels the playing field for everyone and it’s the reason why we have a rich diversity of applications and services that many of us enjoy today.

‘Binding Chaos’: a vision for a compassionate society

‘Binding Chaos’: a vision for a compassionate society | Haute Culture Internet | Scoop.it
Heather Marsh’s new book puts forward a challenge: how to achieve mass collaboration on a global scale and awaken what is inherently human in the heart. We live in revolutionary times of transition and significant change in the foundations of society. 2010 was a year of revelation. The publication of classified documents by WikiLeaks revealed the world of corrupt government secrecy and war crimes beneath corporate headlines, making ‘illegitimate authority’ a household term. WikiLeaks empowered the public to demand transparency and accountability of official action as a check and balance on the exercise of power. With the global legitimation crisis, new horizons opened up.

The Pirate Bay's plan to beat censorship for good

The Pirate Bay's plan to beat censorship for good | Haute Culture Internet | Scoop.it

Extracted from Torrentfreak, the Pirate Bay are at it again, this time with an alternative DNS browser that could lead the way to a newly P2P based Internet. Read on:

“Over the past few years The Pirate Bay has had to deal with its fair share of censorship, mostly through court-ordered blockades.

In response to these efforts the site launched the PirateBrowser last summer, and not without success. The tool, which allows users to circumvent ISP blockades, clocked its 2.5 millionth download a week ago.

I'm a big fan of Bruce Schneier, but just to play devil's advocate, let's say, hypothetically, that Schneier is actually in cahoots with the NSA. Who better to reinstate public trust in weakened cryptosystems? As an exercise in security that Schneier himself may find interesting, what methods are available for proving (or at least affirming) that we can trust Bruce Schneier?

Some rules change, but this info shows that photos still perform better than text links on social networks.

In addition, marketers should pay attention to the reasons behind what drives people to share. You can definitely guarantee more views and more shares when you put more effort in understanding the motivations people have to share a specific piece of content.

Karl Marx on Facebook. What is the ideology of your social network?

Karl Marx on Facebook. What is the ideology of your social network? | Haute Culture Internet | Scoop.it

A social network isn’t a neutral space. It is designed for a purpose, and that purpose is ideological.

Is your social network designed by techies, out of a pure love for seeing what is technologically possible? Is it designed to bring people together, to help them organise? Or is it designed to sell them things, and to collect data? Or, more insidiously, is it designed to give the illusion of bringing people together, so that it can sell things and collect data?

If it’s collecting data, what is the date being used for? Sociological research? Control and surveillance? Marketing? Or is it to help people organise politically?

This is an "occasional paper" (I love this idea that it's only occasional) apart from the name it has some old news and some new ideas around how to teach the new literacies.

Danielle M. Villegas's curator insight, February 13, 7:25 AM

This is a fantastic whitepaper about the value of participatory culture in elearning and other digital means of education. This is very much the approach I come from in my own standpoint of using social media in elearning and mlearning, and just gathering information in general. The document is not light reading, but it's very well-written, and seems fairly comprehensive. A must-read for those who are in education, elearning or mlearning. Really good stuff.
