YouTube cancels billions of music industry video views after finding they were fake or 'dead'

YouTube cancels billions of music industry video views after finding they were fake or 'dead' | Harris Social Media | Scoop.it
The biggest hit was taken by Universal, home of Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Justin Bieber, which lost more than one billion views from its total of seven billion.
Roger Harris's insight:

Gaming social media is never a winning strategy

Music industry giants have taken a big hit as YouTube deletes millions of fake views of their videos.

According to the article: "The unprecedented move left Universal with just five videos on the site - none of which were music - and Sony with just three. 'This was not a bug or a security breach. This was an enforcement of our viewcount policy,' YouTube announced."

The bottom line? It doesn't pay to fake on social media.
Eventually, you will be outed. Then things will be worse than if you'd never cheated. Solution: just don't do it. Go through the hard graft of hiring a good team, crafting sound strategy and striving for excellence in implementation. In the long run, that's going to build engagement, loyalty, leads and conversions much more reliably than artificially inflating numbers

Facebook Expands 'Partner Categories'

Facebook in April introduced a targeting feature called “partner categories” that uses members’ online purchasing histories and location to tailor ads. It allows marketers to target ads across some 500 specific audience segments using third-party data from providers, including Acxiom, Epsilon and Datalogix.

Roger Harris's insight:

Hypertargeting is here, but can it work for everyone?

As Facebook evolves its ad platform, marketers have the ability to target prospects with ever greater precision. FB has created "partner categories," based on user interest, purchasing history and geo. Today, they expanded the number of categories to 1,000.

Such precision targeting yields dividends. According to this article in MediaPost , "Hyundai recently used the feature to reach auto intenders, resulting in the sale of 2.1 times more cars to that audience." The question for independent markets is whether small brands can this approach just as successfully.

Thanks, But No Thanks: The Vicious Cycle of Social Media Reciprocation

Thanks, But No Thanks: The Vicious Cycle of Social Media Reciprocation | Harris Social Media | Scoop.it
Are your social media feeds starting to sound like a broken record to you? You're not alone. Part of the problem with social media is the constant need people feel to reciprocate and thank others for every exchange.
Roger Harris's insight:

This light-hearted article by Daniel Zeevi discusses "the constant need people feel to reciprocate and thank others for every exchange." It's a bit short, so there's one bit of useful advice. The author recommends that "next time someone favorites your post or retweets you, spare your followers the regurgitated thank you."

The key principle is to apply the law of diminishing returns. If your correspondent provides quality and value, it's evidently in your interest to continue that conversation, especially if he or she is an influencer. As the conversation wanes, simply don't be shy of saying, "Thanks for a great conversation, catch you later."

Facebook Hilariously Debunks Princeton Study Saying It Will Lose 80% Of Users | TechCrunch

Facebook Hilariously Debunks Princeton Study Saying It Will Lose 80% Of Users | TechCrunch | Harris Social Media | Scoop.it

Last week Princeton researchers released a widely covered study saying Facebook would lose 80% of its users by 2015-2017. But now Facebook’s data scientists have turned the study’s silly “correlation equals causation” methodology of tracking Google search volume against it to show Princeton would lose all of its students by 2021.

Roger Harris's insight:

Will Facebook be done by 2017? Yes, according to Princeton researchers. But Facebook data scientist offer their retort, pointing out flaws in Princeton's research methodology. Using Google Search data as a scientific tool is a noobie mistake, since so many factors go into search volume. With this kind of bungling, Princeton might prove Facebook's conclusion to be closer to reality.

Social Media Drove Just 1% of Black Friday Online Sales

Social Media Drove Just 1% of Black Friday Online Sales | Harris Social Media | Scoop.it
Black Friday online sales hit another record this year, but social media played a relatively small role -- at least when measured directly.
Roger Harris's insight:

Should social marketers panic because social media drove only 1% of Black Friday sales?

I think not. For most people, Black Friday sales are most like based on purchase decisions that people have already made. So shoppers are not likely to ask friends on social networks for advice, nor are they going to respond much to friends' posts about a great deal or a purchase. Also, advertisers may not have focused on social for promoting Black Friday deals, depressing the leads or conversions from social.

In any case, social marketing never has been, and should not be about direct ROI. According to the article, "Social doesn't have the ability so far to drive traffic or sales directly to the site," he says. "It tends to have more of an indirect influence on purchases." And, as the article points out, the challenge is how to measure the indirect influences social interactions have on purchase decisions

Facebook Marketing for Business: Don't Be Lazy!

Facebook Marketing for Business: Don't Be Lazy! | Harris Social Media | Scoop.it
Social networks such as Facebook certainly aren’t doing much to stop the onslaught of lazy marketing that's been on the rise.
Roger Harris's insight:

This article in +Social Media Today dissects how so-called social media experts take the lowest hanging fruit. Seasoned marketer +Pam Moore takes bandwagon marketers to task for failing to offer clients the best strategic approaches.

She also gives Facebook a smackdown for enabling RAMs (Random Acts of Marketing). Pam says the bottom line for social media engagement is to always ask why you are doing something.

As followers of my social presence will know, I am a big believer in this school of thought. As I have said, the other big question is, "Am I providing value?" If you can't answer that question, then you need to go back to the drawing board.
