Black Friday online sales hit another record this year, but social media played a relatively small role -- at least when measured directly.

Should social marketers panic because social media drove only 1% of Black Friday sales?

I think not. For most people, Black Friday sales are most like based on purchase decisions that people have already made. So shoppers are not likely to ask friends on social networks for advice, nor are they going to respond much to friends' posts about a great deal or a purchase. Also, advertisers may not have focused on social for promoting Black Friday deals, depressing the leads or conversions from social. 

In any case, social marketing never has been, and should not be about direct ROI. According to the article, "Social doesn't have the ability so far to drive traffic or sales directly to the site," he says. "It tends to have more of an indirect influence on purchases." And, as the article points out, the challenge is how to measure the indirect influences social interactions have on purchase decisions
