This letter was sent out to all the people who confided in their bank. htis letter is stating that they are closing and is sorry for the inconvience. If I recieved this letter I would be afraid and upset because i had lost my money to the banks and couldnt get it back, but also afraid of what was next because there was no money coming, or going.

Asia Anderson's insight:

Every person living through this time period had to adjust to a different way of living, than what they were used to.During the time children were deprived of an education, because communitys had to close their schools.Dietary diseases were rampant because adequate food such as milk, fruit, and veggies couldnt be obtained with low salories. The death rate for children suffering from undernourishment was on the rise because, children were loosing their stamina, and were unable to fight off disease. Women found it ecspecailly hard to find a job.

During the Great Depression, untold numbers of homeless people built shantytowns known as Hoovervilles across the U.S.
Asia Anderson's insight:

Statistics such as the unemployment rate tell only part of the story of the Great Depression. The depressin brought hardship, homelessness, and hunger to millions.People lost their jobs, and were evicted from their homesand ended up in the streets.

Some slept in parks, sewer pipes ; wrappingthemselves in newspapers to fend off the cold. They even built makeshift shacks out of scrap metals, creating "shanty towns".

Historical Letter

My historical letter.

Asia Anderson's insight:

           Dear President Hoover,

On January 1st I was layed off from my work leaving my father the whole support of our family. Just recently he was cut down to three days a week with a cut in salary. With seven of us in the family it is just about impossible for us to live on this amount. My mother has been sick for over two months for having had fluctuating nervous breakdowns and we are unable to buy or furnish her with the medicine required for her recovery. We just want her to live a prosperous life.

I am 18 years of age the oldest girl in the family, and it just seems impossible for me to get a job anywhere. I have been enduring this hardship for sometime now and I want it to end. I have been to Mills, Stores and even tired to be a textile worker, I also have been to Firms of all sorts. I am willing and able to work. I can furnish excellent references but at this time of the year it just seems impossible to find work. We are so in debt and beleaguered each week; the bills are piling higher and higher that it just seems as if there was no way out.

We must make a payment on our furniture bill. Also if it isn't paid soon they will be out any day for our furniture, and on top of this we are behind in our rent and if we don’t pay we will be evicted. It would be a big help if we could get some of our bills paid on as they are already bleak, and impatient for their money. If you could help us out with from $35.00 to $50.00 I believe we would be the happiest family in the world. We have a good respectable family, none of us have ever been in any trouble, and our characters are above reproach. Just as soon as I get back to work and the family on their feet again I will pay you back as much a week as possible until your kind favor has been fully repaid.

My father's work has been very poor for the past year, and since we have had very ravenous appetites. He is an advertising salesman, and his work right now is practically nothing; and as he has had kidney trouble for some time, taking more than he could make, for medicine. The legislation board at the hospital is acting completely oblivious to this, and will not pay him for it. He has been improving recently, since he had his teeth extracted, and is looking forward to a job but which will not be available for a month or more. We went through the depression without asking for relief. I registered for unemployment compensation, and although promised $6.25 a week, have not received a cent as yet.

Won't you please grant me therefore mentioned favor, please make it a personal favor, Mrs. Roosevelt, for if you would refer it to a local agency, I would suffer untold delay and embarrassment. Although we are poor, we try to hold off embarrassment, for you know it is "hard to be broke, and harder to admit it." This is important to my family ,and will make every bit of a difference.

Please grant me this favor and I will forever be grateful

Sincerely,
Denise Brenton

Primary source #2 document of household networth decline

Primary source #2 document of household networth decline | Hardships during The Great Depression | Scoop.it
Asia Anderson's insight:

Above is a picture of the worst housing crash in history which took place during the great. The red shows that the housing networth dropped 11% from the year 1929-1934. People lost their homes to the banks, they could no longer afford to pay for it, along with other items they had on credit.

Im sure people were in a panic how could they take care of their children, wives or themselves. this is what caused people to start creating shanty towns and makeshift shacks. If it were me I wouldnt be able to live without walls or personal space. Ecspecially running water so Im guessing it was hard for many rich people to now be in this predicument.

Primary Source #1: Photograph of Jobless Men

Primary Source #1: Photograph of Jobless Men | Hardships during The Great Depression | Scoop.it
Asia Anderson's insight:

Above is a picture taken during the great depression, it shows a sign saying “ jobless men keep going .. We can’t take care of our own”. This picture says a lot; clearly at the time it seems no one would hire people due to the economy. It was so bad that the people who did own businesses would keep the jobs for themselves, and could still not take care of their families. If I were alive during this time I suggest I would not be here today because I am black and a women so that leaves absolutely no hope for me.

It probably was a time that everyone thought the end was coming. There were no jobs, no food, and no hope for tomorrow. A lot of people killed themselves in this time period because they just couldn’t get a break. Men were shamed because they couldn’t get hired and couldn’t take care of their families. It had to be one of the longest hopeless decades in the United States, a period of time I’m glad to not be in.
