Some firms say they care about the well-being and ‘happiness’ of their employees. But are such claims hype, or scientific good sense? This study provides the first evidence, for a classic piece-rate setting, that happiness makes people more productive. In three different styles of experiment, randomly selected individuals are made happier. The treated individuals have 10-12% greater productivity. A final experiment examines major real-world shocks (bereavement and family illness). Lower happiness is associated with lower productivity. These complementary forms of evidence, with different strengths and weaknesses, are consistent with the claim that there is a causal link between well-being and human performance.
I'm not saying forget about whatever it is that is bothering you. Those chapters in our lives shape us. What you can do though, is come at peace with these times. Accept them. Honor them. And move forward.
