VWBPE MOOC: VWBPE MOOC

VWBPE MOOC: VWBPE MOOC | Happenings - Virtual Worlds | Scoop.it

VWBPE is over for another year, but is it? The virtual world tours were moved to a post-conference MOOC that starts today.

Would you like to explore more virtual worlds? Perhaps you heard something at the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education conference and would like to see how this might apply in your teaching and learning practice?
Consider participating in the 2013 VWBPE MOOC - Virtual Worlds Explorations.  There are 2 levels:
1. Just the tours please.
2. Engaging in the MOOC discussions about the tours.

Each week there will be 1 or 2 tours to virtual world environments, hosted by the people who developed the virtual learning environments. We will start in AvayaAlive on Monday 29 July, finishing the week of 19 August with Jokaydia Grid. Seven tours in all.

What do I do now?
Go to the VWBPE MOOC site http://vwbpe.kamedia-interactive.com/

Choose either:
*       MOOC Starting Course (for just the tours) or
*       MOOC Basics (if you want the full meal deal, discussions and articles).  You will be asked to create a new account with MOOC Basics that will give you full access to the course.

OpenSim community loses admired leaderHypergrid Business | Happenings - Virtual Worlds | Scoop.it

For many years, former IBMer Justin Clark-Casey has been the eternally-youthful face of OpenSimulator development, the place where the buck stopped, and the president of the Overte Foundation which oversees OpenSim licensing issues.

Then, on Sunday, the Justin Era ended with a post on his blog, Everything that has a beginning has an end, in which he said that he will be significantly scaling back his work on OpenSim in order to focus on new projects...

You Don't Have to Live Like a Refugee ~ Nara's Nook

You Don't Have to Live Like a Refugee ~ Nara's Nook | Happenings - Virtual Worlds | Scoop.it

With the continued outage of OSGrid, the metaverse is doing it's best to accommodate displaced avatars. Much like the human counterparts who flee disasters, homeless OSG residents sought the nearest and most familiar port in a storm--Metropolis. As weeks of outage stretched into months of outage, as Metro's servers were pushed to the limit managing new members and expanding inventories, refugees  sought alternative  homes where they could begin rebuilding what they'd lost...

Alexina's insight:

Interesting use of NPCs. Nara writes, "One of our favorite things to do at Nook Grid is make book boyz--NPC characters that were heroes in our novels--and set them up as dance partners at our First Friday book birthday parties each month. As you can imagine, we were all over Mata Hari's new dance system that allows us to deliver male and female characters as dance partners from the dance ball."

"In particular, that means support for WebGL — which was used most recently by the Cloud Party virtual world to create a Second Life-style immersive experience right in a Web browser, no download required.
The end result should make it easier to create Web-based virtual world browsers without worrying about making it work with particular equipment." wrote Maria Korolov.

Improved Item Exchange with Other Grids | Virtual World Blog | Happenings - Virtual Worlds | Scoop.it

We updated the system today with a change that makes it easier to take items from other grids into Kitely, and then take them with you when you leave Kitely to visit other grids.

This update also includes several bug fixes, including a bug that sometimes prevented Hypergrid users from teleporting into Kitely.

"...We had more than thirty avatars from eleven different grids joining us at the Clubhouse this week, which was officially called 'ContraptionFest' and this event looks like becoming a regular feature of the Safari, because it was thoroughly entertaining .."

Alexina's insight:

I was on this safari - it was quite entertaining. Over three hours went very fast! Tons of great free things are at the Lani Mall on OSGrid  and I am going back for more this week. Prax and I tested the all terrain vehicles that Thirza gave us when we got back to Kitely. They appear to work fine -- we have ODE physics enabled on our worlds in Kitely.  I absolutely loved Joe Builder's Lost World which is at ground level below the 4-region build of the USS Enterprise.
