Parsons Teams with Donna Karan to Bolster Haiti’s Artisan Community

Parsons Teams with Donna Karan to Bolster Haiti’s Artisan Community | Haitian Education | Scoop.it
Mochi Liu, MArch ’15; Amanda Evengaard, BFA Product Design ’15; Ekaterina Kulikova, MA Fashion Studies ’15; and Jennifer June, MFA Interior Design ’16 accessed extensive studio facilities, including modeling, fabrication, and print shops, at Parsons School of Design. Marithou Dupoux, an artisan in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, has to make do with what she has. To design her raku pottery, Dupoux uses a makeshift kiln made of ceramic fiber and chicken wire; she heats the apparatus with a torch fed by a large propane tank. “At Parsons, when you need to build something, you can get pretty much anything you want,” says Liu, who met Dupoux during a visit to Haiti this summer with famed fashion designer and Parsons alumna Donna Karan. “In Haiti, many resources are scarce. You have to be creative with what you have in hand.” Haiti’s artisans boast a proud tradition fueled by ingenuity, resourcefulness, and raw talent. Now, with the help of Donna Karan’s [...]

How The Minister of Education in Haiti is Combating use of Preschoolers for Revenue Generation in Schools

Following the validation of its management policy of early childhood, and given the importance of educating young children in support of initiatives already taken by civil society, the Ministry of National Education remember...
Winifred Flint's insight:

Minister Manigat is coming down hard on the schools who are requiring preschoolers to attend a graduation ceremony - that costs the parents money such that if the preschooler doesn't "graduate" the preschooler is not eligible to enter first grade. And he is also coming against the practice of requiring those entering first grade to know how to read...which they can only do in preschools that only the well-off can afford. Kudos to you - Minster Manigat.

Winifred Flint's insight:

The MENFP is taking a big step towards providing a more accountable and transparent operation. It is listing all teachers who have the provisional teaching permit by department as well as in the private schools. This is an excellent step - but measures must be taken to insure that ineligible names do not make their way onto these lists.

The medical education infrastructure has been built up in the minority countries bit by bit over decades to the high standards we now see. It didn't happen overnight. So how to get to this same standard in majority countries but in less time? This project  of teaching medicine in phases may provide answers.

Haiti Education Minister Manigat Listens to His 12 Predecessors

Haiti Education Minister Manigat Listens to His 12 Predecessors | Haitian Education | Scoop.it
Thursday at the invitation of Nesmy Manigat, the Minister of Education, a dozen former ministers of education of Haiti, gathered in the Forum, at the Ministry...
Winifred Flint's insight:

Minster Manigat invited the last 12 education ministers for a sit down. The average time in office of an education minister in Haiti is about 1 year so he gathered about 12 years of history in the room. In the past, the mode of operation of the education ministry was reactionary - not one of making policy and then executing it. - but of putting out fires. One of the downsides of this is that institutional memory does not get documented so that there can be a history of lessons learned.  It looks like Minister Manigat is making a change here - actively seeking out lessons learned.
