Libraries should create an environment for "collaboration and knowledge co-construction."

Tasia Thompson's curator insight, February 11, 11:20 PM

quote: Students and teachers no longer need a library simply for access. Instead, they require a place that encourages participatory learning and allows for co-construction of understanding from a variety of sources. In other words, instead of being an archive, libraries are becoming a learning commons.

LAUSD's students need better libraries, not iPads | Future of Libraries: Beyond Gutenberg | Scoop.it
Like Supt. John Deasy and others in the Los Angeles Unified School District , I am concerned about the educational civil rights of the district's students. While the iPad -for-every-student controversy has gotten much media coverage lately, a long-term problem has gotten very little attention: the lack of equal access to a quality school library. A 19-month investigation by the U.S. Department of Education 's Office for Civil Rights concluded in 2011 that thousands of LAUSD students were be

15 Lesson Plans For Making Students Better Online Researchers ~ Global Digital Citizen Foundation

15 Lesson Plans For Making Students Better Online Researchers ~ Global Digital Citizen Foundation | Future of Libraries: Beyond Gutenberg | Scoop.it

"Google is usually one of the first places students turn to when tasked with an assignment. Whether it’s for research, real-time results, or just a little digital exploration … it’s important they know how to properly Google. Lucky for teachers (and students, of course), Google has a handy set of lesson plans that are just waiting to be unleashed upon the leaders of tomorrow.

"While I understand there’s a LOT more to research than just Googling, it’s important to note that this is where nearly all students start their research. Therefore, it’s a critical skill if they’re going to start down the right paths.

"Below are 15 lesson plans courtesy of Google designed to make students better online researchers. They’re organized by difficulty and meant to help students (and everyone) become better online searchers."

This is a pet peeve of mine--schools are still not teaching kids how to do this properly, with disastrous results. Whether you homeschool or send a child to school, these lessons will help them use the Internet more effectively (and responsibly) for research projects.
