Time for VR Bedtime stories with Samsung Gear VR

Time for VR Bedtime stories with Samsung Gear VR | Future of Libraries: Beyond Gutenberg | Scoop.it
Every parent knows that a bedtime story is a special moment in a child's
day. But what if parents can't always be there to read to their children?
Well Samsung thinks that with the use of Virtual reality they can bring
parents and their children together.  The concept works via an app that can
connect a child and parent using Google Cardboard and/or Gear VR, the pair
can be connected with voice chat and head movements in a shared virtual
world inspired by a storybook. The VR masks from Samsung could resemble a
penguin or frog, letting a kid essentially pick what kind of avatar they
want to have in the virtual space. "  Sharing a bedtime story is incredibly
special. But longer working days and hectic schedules make this harder to
do. At Samsung we believe that technology should bring us closer together.
That’s why we developed Bedtime VR Stories, so parents and children can
enjoy a story together, even when they’re apart. Using individual VR
headsets, the app creates a VR story environment where parent and child can
see and interact with each other, for an immersive shared experience.
Bedtime VR Stories is currently being developed for full release." says
Samsung. This is an interesting application for virtual reality and I often
talk about how VR as a new medium, has the potential to connect people in
new and exciting ways. This certainly will not replace 'real' bedtime
reading as that moment can never truly be captured. But for busy parents
traveling for work this is a wonderful way to connect with your child and
feel a close as possible. Now the big question for Samsung is can I read
the Gruffalo in VR?
Valerie Hill's insight:
Parents, teachers, and librarians understand the importance of reading and discussing books together.  The concept of sharing that time in virtual reality is kind of mind-blowing and perhaps could be misused. This certainly is an example of the need for digital citizenship.
