Oscar Issac was a famous musisican from Guatemala. The went to college at Julliard and that is where graduated. Erick Chavarria was born in Guatemala city but at the age fifteen he moved to the united states to live with his uncle. His first in america was a dishwaher but as time went on he keep telling himself that he would move on to bigger and better things. Julio Ponce Palmieri is an award winning filmmaker and writer from Guatemala city.

Guatemala includes eight different industries to contribute nearly 25% of the countries GDP. The countries manufacturing industries employe nearly 15% of its population. The lack of adequate infrastructure and skilled labor has hindered growth. The toursim industry has been a major contributor to the countries GDP. Its apperal industry is the largest employers and significant contributor to the countries exports. The mining and the petroluem industries also play a role in the countries economy.

Typical food

Many of the foods in Guatemala are based on the Maya cuisine. Some of the main ingredients are corn, chillis, and beans. There are some commom foods that are eaten on certain days of the week. For example it is custom to eat paches(a kind of tamale made from potatoes) on Thursday. There are also some dishes that are associated with special occasions.

Guatemala is a constitutional goverment. Which means that the president is head of state and of government and of the multi-party system. The Executive branch is exercised by the government. The Legislative branch is vested in bothe the government and the congress of the republic. The Judicial branch is independent from the other two branches.

The current president of Guatamala is Otto Pérez Molina. He has been the president since January 14 2012. He served in the military as the Director of Military Inteligence. He graduated from Guatemala's National Military Academy. He retired from the active military in January 2000. November of 2011 was when he was elected president with 54% of the votes.

The flag of Guatemala has two colors. It has one white stripe in the middle and two blue stripes on either side. The blue stripes mean that Guatemala is between two oceans, the Pacific and Alantic. The white stripe stands for peace and purity. In the stripe is the countries state bird that symbolies liberty.

My country is Guatemala. It's capital is Guatemala City. The countries name in spanish is República de Guatemala. The real name for the capital is Guatemala del valle de la Asunción. They became independent from Spain in 1821.

Important holiday

If you go to Guatemala on Independence day then you will be overwhelmed by all the bands.Their Independence day is on september 15. The celebration is held in the towns square, kind of like new york city. Each one of the bands play infront of all the towns people. Everyone of the bands are dressed and well rehearsed for this wonderful celebration for Guatemala's independence.

Weather during this time of the year in the capital city

The weather is looking pretty good in Guatemala City. They have a low change for rain on most of the days. The high is in the low 70's. The low is in the high 50's. It is going to have a little bit of win on most of the days. So if you are going to Guatemala then you might want to wear a jacket.

In the 1500's a spanish adventurer name Pedrode Alvarado defeats the Maya and turns Guatemala into a spanish colony. In 1821 Guatemala becomes independent and joins the Mexican empire the following year. In 1839 Guatemala becomes fully independent. In 1941 Guatemala declares war on the Axis powers. In 1976 27,000are killed and more than a million are found homelessby the earthquake.

Almost two thirds of the land is suitable for agricultural usage. The main crops in Guatemala is coffee, sugar, bananas, and cotton along with hemp, essential oils, and cacao. Coffee is grow on highland plantations. The bananas are produced along the Alantic coastal plain. Nontraditional exports have greatly increased over the years.

In Guatemala 50-60% of the people are Catholic. 40% of the people are protesant and 3% of the people are eastern orthodox. One percent of the people have a Mayan faith. More than on third of the people are protesant. The government has made a policy that every Mayan church in the country has to have an altar so that traditional ceremonies can be held.

Literacy Rates

 In urban areas 55% of the women are literate. In rural areas the rate is lower with only 35% of the women are literate. Most children do not go to school because of the lower financial resources. If they do go to school then they are over age. For the kids that do go to school they are most likely to repeat the grades or they will drop out.

The currency of Guatemala is quetzal. It is called that because of the countries bird. It is divided into 100 cents called centavos. In the top right corner of the bills is the value displayed in Mayan roman numerals because Guatemalans cultural history. The first time that they issued paper money was in 1946. The first centavos were first introduced in 1925.
