Why it's time to stop romanticising where our food comes from

“Using rolling green hills and picturesque cows in marketing does little to tell consumers about the journey from farm to fork (RT @GuardianSustBiz: Despite years of "storytelling", the public remains largely ill-informed about the food system:”
Lenni Morkel-Kingsbury's insight:

Cracking the shell on caged-egg production

Cracking the shell on caged-egg production | Grow it...eat it | Scoop.it
A farmer says community misconceptions about caged-egg production are hurting the industry.
Lenni Morkel-Kingsbury's insight:
Hmmmm....I am not sure about this . Of course the " welfare of the birds " is important to caged- egg producers. Seems logical. Chickens = eggs eggs= product and profit....therefore welfare of chickens linked to bottom line. .Interesting claims that this is best practice model for mass egg production....numbers like 30000 eggs per hour...and claims in article of chicken welfare focuses on benefits of disease reduction/ control and less cannibalism and smothering amongst the chickens...compared to what? This article tries to suggest that there are misconceptions about the caged egg industry out there in public but it's comparison of caged egg production with free range practice falls short of making any benefit claims against this other than of course we care for our chickens to maintain production rates. Hmmmm

What a great way to introduce kids to growing foods themselves. This scoop provides some fanastic ideas about how to reuse food by regrowing it. These ideas are fantastic to try in the home or even better as part of a school garden. These ideas can be used and create little mess and are very inexpensive. Obviously you just need to be aware of the growing time, particularly for pineapples, if you were to look into using some of these ideas in a classroom.
