Gamers, their networks and collective intelligence. « Seven Levels Left | Collective intelligence | Scoop.it

The next generation is growing up in a collaborative world and are instinctual in their use of collective intelligence and networks. We have become ‘informational hunters and gatherers” (Jenkins, 2006, location 2480) and while elder generations may still be isolated in old media, the younger generations, and especially gamers, are learning to work together in a way we have never done before. Games bring people together and allow for collaboration in problem solving, a skill that many of us could benefit in practicing.

Different view: Why CrowdSourcing is Bad...or Great | Collective intelligence | Scoop.it
I am highly critical of those who promote crowdsourcing as some sort of panacea. Except for Duct Tape, nothing is a panacea. Crowdsourcing has many of the same shortcomings as outsourcing, and a few more to boot.

Pierre Levy on Collective Intelligence and Curation

A video interview from Howard Rheingold, this time with "Collective Intelligence" guru Pierre Levy.  The answers and explanations Mr Levy provides are absolutely simple and clear to understand for anyone.

In essence what emerges from the dialogue is that in the process of doing "serious", "quality" curation, even at the personal level, me and you are helping others understand and make sense of their world more easily. It is a virtuous circle and it is certainly an act of collective intelligence from this viewpoint.

Collective Intelligence April 2012: Call for papers

Collective Intelligence April 2012: Call for papers | Collective intelligence | Scoop.it

We seek papers about behavior that is both collective and intelligent. By collective, we mean groups of individual actors, including, for example, people,
computational agents, and organizations. By intelligent, we mean that the collective behavior of the group exhibits characteristics such as, for example,
perception, learning, judgment, or problem solving.

Investigation of Rating Scales for Collective Intelligence in Innovation Communities

Investigation of Rating Scales for Collective Intelligence in Innovation Communities | Collective intelligence | Scoop.it

We all rate user-generated content on the web all the time: videos, blog posts, pictures. These ratings usually serve to identify content that we might like. In online innovation communities such as Dell’s IdeaStorm or My Starbucks Idea those ratings serve a different purpose: identify the “best” idea to be implemented by the host organization (there is a whole other argument that it is only about marketing and not about the “ideas” but let’s not go down that road). So the question arises: how can we best design collective intelligence mechanisms for idea selection in innovation communities?

In a paper published at the last ICIS conference, a group of researchers from TUM (Germany) compared three different rating mechanisms in a field experiment (n=313) against a base-line expert rating.

Call it semantic heterogenity...

Call it semantic heterogenity... | Collective intelligence | Scoop.it

In 2008, journalist Jeff Howe published Crowdsourcing: Why the Power of the Crowd Is Driving the Future of Business, in which he defined the term as follows:
“The act of taking a job traditionally performed by a designated agent (usually an employee) and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people in the form of an open call.”
Fairly straightforward, yes? Well, judging from the way the term is applied in modern media, there’s still some confusion over the true meaning crowdsourcing.
To illustrate, here are two recent news stories purporting to show crowdsourcing at work. One example fits the bill perfectly. The other does not. See if you can guess which is which…

Inspired by a recent post in Inc.com, we asked how companies generate ideas from staff members. The suggestions ranged from financial incentives to instant-message "idea storms."

Birth of the global mind - FT.com | Collective intelligence | Scoop.it

To understand where the combination of mobile sensors, cloud databases and computer algorithms augmented by human action is leading us, consider the self-driving car. Stanley, a driverless vehicle, won the US Darpa (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) grand challenge in 2005 by navigating a course of slightly over seven miles in a little under seven hours. Last year, Google demonstrated an autonomous vehicle that has driven over 100,000 miles in ordinary traffic. The difference: Stanley used traditional artificial intelligence algorithms and techniques; the Google autonomous vehicle is augmented with the memory of millions of road miles put in by human drivers building the Google Street View database. Those cars recorded countless details – the location of stop signs, obstacles, even the road surface.

Collective Intelligence & Pyramidal Intelligence

Collective Intelligence & Pyramidal Intelligence | Collective intelligence | Scoop.it

Pyramidal collective intelligence has a major limit: it shows a structural incapability to adapt to the unsteady, unpredictable and disruptive grounds of complexity. Standards and norms are most of the time they are subordinated to a logic of competition. They serve a strategy of territorial occupation and monopolistic control by means of artificially rarefying knowledge (patents, intellectual property, etc…), rather than maximizing the permeability and the interoperability with the external environment. New technologies bring a new paradigm allowing a decentralized co-creation of value.

4 reasons to focus on collective intelligence

4 reasons to focus on collective intelligence | Collective intelligence | Scoop.it

For as long as we can look back, people made decisions after sitting down as departments, partners, maybe a board, or a leadership team going back and forth until they “thought” they had the best decision.

A new environment is emerging and it’s not just based on a small group of people making decisions that they think are “smart”. Instead, it is based on a large group of people coming together to make significantly smarter decisions. And if you’re a business and haven’t heard of this you better consider it and fast!
