A Living Myth: Collective Intelligence yields Collective Action

A Living Myth: Collective Intelligence yields Collective Action | Collective intelligence | Scoop.it
Humanity is collectively facing James Hillman’s dilemma in The Soul’s Code, where he says, “I can no longer be sure whether the psyche is in me or whether I’m in the psyche…” The national and personal borders that were so vital to identity are increasingly tested by swiftly advancing uncertainties. At the core is a mass realization by a culture engrossed in materialistic pursuit that perhaps, just maybe, something more is afoot.

Scenius, or Communal Genius

Scenius, or Communal Genius | Collective intelligence | Scoop.it
Scenius is like genius, only embedded in a scene rather than in genes. Brian Eno suggested the word to convey the extreme creativity that groups, places or "scenes" can occasionally generate. His actual definition is: "Scenius stands for the intelligence and the intuition of a whole cultural scene. It is the communal form of the concept of the genius."

Individuals immersed in a productive scenius will blossom and produce their best work. When buoyed by scenius, you act like genius. Your like-minded peers, and the entire environment inspire you.

The geography of scenius is nurtured by several factors:

MBTI Research addition to More Women Increases Collective Intelligence of Teams

MBTI Research addition to More Women Increases Collective Intelligence of Teams | Collective intelligence | Scoop.it
Another view and an interesting addition to the already often mentioned research on the collective intelligence of groups and the number of women participating.

Current leadership culture – or perhaps unconscious bias – mean that “thinking” and “judging” are heavily overrepresented. With it comes the emphasis on rationality rather than social attunement, on closure, on planning, on be bright – be brief – be gone rather than on process, on the exploration of options, on adaptability.

Inviting more women into teams results in breaking up this “mono-culture”.

Collective Intelligence in Philanthropy

The problem is that it’s hard for humans to act like ants, because unlike ants humans are smart individually. Perhaps smarter than is good for us. The way we like to attack problems is exactly the opposite of how ants attack problems. We like to centralize control. We like to understand problems to completion – or at least pretend we do – before attempting to address them. This is exactly the opposite of what we need to do to be successful.

Three solutions:
* Foundations need to stop thinking of themselves as funders. They need to think of themselves as movers of knowledge instead of movers of money.
* Give knowledge away aggressively.
* In the face of structural resistance, change requires courage. "Courage" is a word that’s not used enough in philanthropy.

Ledface – Help us build a new kind of intelligence

Ledface – Help us build a new kind of intelligence | Collective intelligence | Scoop.it
We can now see that the whole becomes not merely more, but very different from the sum of its parts. — Philip Warren Anderson

The definition of intelligence is a controversial matter, but no matter which way you look at it, intelligence is an irreducible, multi-dimensional system. Furthermore, if you take a Cartesian split approach toward intelligence, you’d be ignoring collective properties that arise from the properties of parts.

Let’s discuss some concepts involved in Ledface’s project....

Twitter and the Global Brain - Google Docs

STDP says that if two neurons fire (= spike) in rapid succession, the connection from the one that fires first to the one that fires second will be strengthened.

There is an intriguing analogy between networks of neurons operating by the STDP rule and the emerging structure and functioning of real-time social networks like Twitter.
