The Whole System Failed Trayvon Martin

The Whole System Failed Trayvon Martin | Grief and Loss | Scoop.it

The whole system failed Martin. What prevents it from failing my children, or yours?

I feel that I must tell my boys that, but I can’t. It’s stuck in my throat. It’s an impossibly heartbreaking conversation to have. So, I sit and watch in silence, and occasionally mouth the word, “breathe,” because I keep forgetting to.

A Love Song to Mom, From Me (and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy)

A Love Song to Mom, From Me (and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) | Grief and Loss | Scoop.it

I cherish time spent with my mother. No matter how busy I get, I always make time for her. “She’s the closest friend I have in my life” is the truest line I’ve ever written, and the closing lyrics “I won’t have the courage to sort through her things; I cannot bear all the pain it will bring” confronts my fear of the inevitable.

GrahamForeverInMyHeart's insight:

Listen to  Mark Kozelek's song "I Can't Live Without My Mother's Love", a tribute to all of us who have devoted ourselves to our children - here and gone. The song is also a tribute to our mothers, whether they are still here or gone.

Jeanine Gray's curator insight, October 13, 2013 6:39 PM

I think that the reason may be because we think whatever we say will not be the end result that you desire.

The desire you have that wrenches your heart is to have your child live again.

We want nothing more than that to happen for you but we are helpless in that effort.

So we hide behind our silence not knowing how to comfort your weaping heart and we become cowards as we turn and walk away.

I remember one coworker who had breast cancer. I saw her in the parking lot and my initial reaction was to avoid her. I overcame that fear and talked to her, trying to speak words of comfort.  She thanked me for the conversation and died soon afterward. I wondered how many others had avoided her because death was pursuing her and finally caught her in its grasp.

Nancy Saltzman, author of Radical Survivor, on The Story Project | Grief and Loss | Scoop.it

Nancy’s inspiring and triumphant true story is a life marked by tragedy but defined by resilience. This two time cancer survivor endured tragedies close to her: the untimely death of her sister, her best friend killed in an auto crash—a seemingly ongoing appointment with loss.

However, Nancy faced her toughest challenge, when her husband, Joel, and two young sons, Adam and Seth, were killed in a small plane crash in Colorado.
