The 1.5-megawatt ICAES system is located at SustainX headquarters in Seabrook, New Hampshire. It takes electricity from the grid and uses it to drive a motor that compresses air and stores it isothermally, or at near-constant temperature.

 

To do so it captures the heat produced during compression, traps it in water, and stores the warmed air-water mixture in pipes.

 

When electricity is needed back on the grid, the process reverses and the air expands, driving a generator. No fossil fuel is needed to reheat the air and no emissions are produced, making ICAES a safe and sustainable energy storage solution.

It would be interesting to combine this with wind energy generation, which could be switched to directly generate compressed air, rather than electricity that has to be converted to compressed air.

 

Such a set-up would have the added advantage of making the windmills lighter in their construction and easier to maintain, as the heavy generator on top of the tower could be eliminated. A simple gear mechanism could bring the rotation to the bottom of the tower, where the compressed air can be generated, to be fed directly into storage.

 

Wind energy without the intermittency of low-wind times.

Transactive energy (TE) is a new hot topic in the energy industry, but what exactly is it? Frankly, it is a concept so new that it does not yet have a formal definition. Carl Imhoff, manager of electricity infrastructure for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory summed it up by saying, “Transactive energy is a means of using economic signals or incentives to engage all the intelligent devices in the power grid—from the consumer to the transmission system—to get a more optimal allocation of resources and engage demand in ways we haven’t been able to before.” What does this really mean?

 

It means that the electric distribution system is transforming from a one-way generator to end-user transmission system to a smart grid with resources like distributed generation, load management, ancillary services, and even generation resources owned by third parties or end-users. The intelligence driving TE is based on market value and economics. Whereas smart grid technology refers to the ability of the electric grid to communicate between generator, end-user and even points in between, TE takes this a step further and introduces the additional consideration of energy value.

 

To understand the concept of TE it is important to understand the role of dynamic pricing in the energy industry. Wholesale power markets use dynamic pricing to value energy based on demand at the time of use. This means price of electricity can fluctuate throughout the day. A TE system can actually make energy use decisions based on price signals. This could include a building energy management system programmed to respond to a high price signal by curtailing energy use via automated demand response, using microgrid generation, or even shifting load to onsite energy storage.

Graphene-based supercapacitors have already proven the equal of conventional supercapacitors – in the lab. But now researchers at Melbourne’s Monash University claim to have developed of a new scalable and cost-effective technique to engineer graphene-based supercapacitors that brings them a step closer to commercial development.

 

With their almost indefinite lifespan and ability to recharge in seconds, supercapacitors have tremendous energy-storage potential for everything from portable electronics, to electric vehicles and even large-scale renewable energy plants. But the drawback of existing supercapacitors has been their low energy density of around 5 to 8 Wh/liter, which means they either have to be exceedingly large or recharged frequently.

 

Professor Dan Li and his team at Monash University’s Department of Materials Engineering has created a graphene-based supercapacitor with an energy density of 60 Wh/liter, which is around 12 times higher than that of commercially available supercapacitors and in the same league as lead-acid batteries. The device also lasts as long as a conventional battery.

 

To maximize the energy density, the team created a compact electrode from an adaptive graphene gel film they had previously developed. To control the spacing between graphene sheets on the sub-nanometer scale, the team used liquid electrolytes, which are generally used as the conductor in conventional supercapacitors.

 

Unlike conventional supercapacitors that are generally made of highly porous carbon with unnecessarily large pores and rely on a liquid electrolyte to transport the electrical charge, the liquid electrolyte in Li’s team’s supercapacitor plays a dual role of conducting electricity and also maintaining the minute space between the graphene sheets. This maximizes the density without compromising the supercapcitor’s porosity, they claim.

 

To create their compact electrode, the researchers used a technique similar to one used in traditional paper making, which they say makes the process cost-effective and easily scalable for industrial applications.

 

"We have created a macroscopic graphene material that is a step beyond what has been achieved previously. It is almost at the stage of moving from the lab to commercial development," Professor Li said.
