Book Review : Small Green Roofs - The Metropolitan Field Guide | Greenroofs & Urban biodiversity | Scoop.it

Full of information about small green roofs, their construction and biodiversity and plants, over half is devoted to 40 case studies. The book is full of inspiring and beautiful images of a wide variety of green roofs on all manner of buildings and structures. Written for homeowners, architects, landscape architects or ecologists, it’s a valuable resource on a practical level that serves as an excellent companion to the many other green roof books on the market, while at the same time offering a completely unique approach to the way green roofs have been previously written about.

Toitsverts Biodivers / Livingroofs's insight:

A New Biosolar roof rises in the City of London

A New Biosolar roof rises in the City of London | Greenroofs & Urban biodiversity | Scoop.it

Originally the roof in question had been a simple sedum green roof. Installed as a planning condition on a new bank, the roof was what it was. However the bank in question, had decided that they would like to install solar panels. The only viable place for the solar panels was on the area covered in vegetation.

Green roofs in Sweden – what is new?

Green roofs in Sweden – what is new? | Greenroofs & Urban biodiversity | Scoop.it
The green roof development in Sweden the last years have gone from sedum blanket roofs to biodiverse green roofs which offers more benefits than thin sedum roofs. Malmö has long been the leading city in Sweden when it comes to roof greening and green infrastructure in general. Several of the quite recently installed biotope roofs in Malmö was part of a national VINNOVA-project called BiodiverCity.

The Importance of Wild Roofs to Pollinators

The Importance of Wild Roofs to Pollinators | Greenroofs & Urban biodiversity | Scoop.it
Bees and other pollinators, including butterflies, have been declining as their habitat and food gradually disappears. We’ve lost 97% of our wild-flower rich meadows in the countryside since the Second World War due to modern farming practices, and in towns and cities green spaces have been concreted over to create shopping malls and housing developments, while gardens and back yards are being decked over to create low maintenance outside space and car parking spaces.

Bepflanzung von Dächern - Grüne Häuserschluchten

Bepflanzung von Dächern - Grüne Häuserschluchten | Greenroofs & Urban biodiversity | Scoop.it

A Spatial Overview of the Nature of Cities | The Nature of Cities

A Spatial Overview of the Nature of Cities | The Nature of Cities | Greenroofs & Urban biodiversity | Scoop.it
I like to simplify what constitutes urban nature in a given area. I therefore thought it might be interesting to provide an overview and to ask whether anything is missing, or erroneously included. This article expresses my view of the variety of forms that could be included under the “nature of cities” banner. On planning maps, nature is represented by polygons, lines, and points. Polygons are shapes, denoting area. Lines are linear features—though not necessarily straight ones. Points are individual features small enough not to require a shape to represent them.

Fifth Dimension – Green Roofs in Urban Areas

Fifth Dimension – Green Roofs in Urban Areas | Greenroofs & Urban biodiversity | Scoop.it
Green roofs could essentially improve the living environment in cities, as they can be anticipated to produce regulating, provisioning and immaterial ecosystem services such as improvement of microclimate, balancing of hydrological cycle, CO2 sequestration, habitat provision, active cooling/insulation, dust filtering, opportunities for gardening and local food production in kitchen gardens, aesthetic improvement, additional green space and recreational services and educational services via e.g. nature paths on the roofs. The roof area increases dramatically with urban development..

In the Future, Will We Build Cities for Wildlife and Design the Countryside for People? | The Nature of Cities

In the Future, Will We Build Cities for Wildlife and Design the Countryside for People? | The Nature of Cities | Greenroofs & Urban biodiversity | Scoop.it
Cities have long been known as hotspots for innovation. In the past, much of this could be attributed to cities being the centralised physical location of businesses, investors, consumers, markets, and places of learning, and as nodes for connecting with other people and cities around the world. Yet in the new era of global communication, including crowd-sourced funding, online learning, and virtual marketplaces, this dependence on physical proximity is decoupling. Even as our world’s human population becomes increasingly urbanised, our transport and communication infrastructure are simultaneously changing our physical dependence on a city location for an “urban” lifestyle. This leads to a shift in our understanding of what it means to be “urban”, with previous understandings of urban as a physically defined “urbanized” landscape becoming replaced with a much more nuanced “continuum of urbanity”.
