Urbanizing the Suburban Street

Urbanizing the Suburban Street | green streets | Scoop.it
A community tries some relatively pain-free fixes to make its streets greener and more walkable...

One of the most challenging aspects of suburbs, and of the prescriptions for improving them, is the character of their roadways. Most of us take the poor design of our streets – the most visible part of most suburban communities, if you think about it – so much for granted that it never occurs to us that they actually could be made better for the community and for the environment.

Consider, for example, main "arterial" streets so wide that pedestrians can’t cross them, even if there is a reason to; little if any greenery to absorb water, heat, or provide a calming influence; or residential streets with no sidewalks.

This is where Montgomery County’s new street-scape initiative comes in. It has done some things right, including the preservation of much of its farmland – in part by channeling growth into the central districts of Bethesda and Silver Spring, both served by D.C.’s rail transit system, and more recently by encouraging walkable redevelopment along the notoriously sprawled-out Rockville Pike corridor.

8 European projects show how design and planning can reduce automobile dependence...

Getting people out of their cars is a common goal for many urban planners and even some developers. But the idea is not always so easy to achieve, especially in car-dependent places. Eight relatively new developments in Europe, however, offer insights into how small-scale projects can encourage alternate transportation options.

Visualizing Sustainable Urbanization

Visualizing Sustainable Urbanization | green streets | Scoop.it

In a Sustainable City, the use of renewable resources is emphazised, resource consumption is minimized and resources are managed in a way that maximizes recovery and reuse.
New system solutions provide scope for synergies between sewage, waste and energy production and enable coordination with efficient land use, landscape planning and transport systems. This is illustrated by the eco-cycle model which is essential for a definitive shift from linear to circular resource flows.

Emily Bian's curator insight, May 22, 2015 9:27 AM

Sustainability is the survival of the environment to be able to sustain future generations. Environmental sustainability is a critical issue due to mass consumption, pollution, climate change, and things like deforestation and desertification.

People are using more renewable resources and trying to cut down on mass consumption.

This is a good diagram and article to read for APHUG students for them to learn about sustainability and how that affects the people living on this earth.

Anna Sasaki's curator insight, May 27, 2015 3:08 AM

Sustainability derives from the utilization of renewable resources. There are new and improved methods of the disposal of waste and more eco-friendly ways of transportation and landscape planning. This model insinuates the different ingredients needed to create a sustainable city.

This ties into master planned cities, since the cities have to take into account these fundamental rules of sustainability, as well as the small details which could potentially have grand repercussions.

In the provinces of southeastern Italy, the landscape is changing, as a new world of alternative energy infrastructure blends insular hill towns, turbines and solar panels across traditional farmland. Yet, on the same horizons other, age-old reflections of local sustainable practices echo time-honored human traditions, as lessons for urban reinvention in a networked world.
