OMA and Olin win competition to design garden bridge for Washington DC

OMA and Olin win competition to design garden bridge for Washington DC | green streets | Scoop.it

Rem Koolhaas' firm OMA has teamed up with Olin to create the 11th Street Bridge Park – a raised garden spanning Washington DC's Anacostia River.

Netherlands-based OMA and Olin beat three other design teams to win a government-supported competition to design a bridge that could provide a new "civic space" for the USA's capital city.

The project, currently expected to cost $35 million (£22 million), was proposed to find new uses for a series of piers that previously supported a major road crossing across the Anacostia River, which has been moved to a new location.

The new design is comparable to New York's popular High Line park andThomas Heatherwick's garden bridge proposal for the River Thames in London.

Every day, thousands of cyclists and pedestrians jockey for space on a narrow strip along the center of the Brooklyn Bridge. At the Brooklyn terminus of the bridge, however, the already-chaotic scene devolves into a dangerous confluence of cars, bikes, and pedestrians as the path abruptly ends in the center of a busy intersection at Adams and Tillary streets.

After five years of study, meetings, and schematic designs, however, accessing the Brooklyn Bridge will soon be improved under a plan to revamp the Brooklyn Bridge Gateway Area streetscape, encompassing Tillary Street between Cadman Plaza West and Prince Street and several blocks of Adams Street, with widened sidewalks, improved bike lanes, and increased landscaping.

In Sweden, a series of undulating arches, brightly lit by fuchsia-tinted LED lights, dance across the Sölvesborg Bay. From a distance, the structure could be mistaken for the Loch Ness Monster's mysterious glowing cousin, but these massive illuminated vaults actually support Europe's longest pedestrian bridge.

Spanning 2,480 feet—that's nearly half a mile!—the Sölvesborg Bridge was designed by Swedish design firm Ljusarkitektur in collaboration with lighting company Lumenpulse to connect the small town of Sölvesborg with a new housing district across the bay.

Architect Thomas Heatherwick, together with actor and green activist Joanna Lumley have conceived what they call the ‘garden bridge’; a scheme that sees a lush green space connecting north and south london, in response to a call for proposals simed at improving pedestrian links across the river Thames.


The structure is an elevated garden that will offer a place in which to enjoy unparalleled views of the city, while providing new walking routes between the popular covent garden and soho quarters. It will also enhance London’s already rich and diverse horticultural heritage of allotments and community gardens, heathlands, parks and squares; further fulfilling its reputation for being one of the greenest urban areas of its size in the world.

Many city dwellers feel enveloped by their urban environment and ache for open spaces. Bringing the landscape into the city is not an uncommon theme, with rooftop gardens, council verge regeneration, and green walls among many of the key ideas envisioned by landscape architects. 

These transformations emerge in an effort to counter the routine indifference of many built forms, yet never on such a scale as the Breakfast on the Bridge event, which took place in Sydney in recent years.

The Bay Lights is the world’s largest LED light sculpture, 1.8 miles wide and 500 feet high. Inspired by the Bay Bridge’s 75th Anniversary, its 25,000 white LED lights are individually programmed to create a never-repeating, dazzling display across the Bay Bridge West Span through 2015.

Drawing inspiration from the surroundings and the dynamic nature of the water below, artist Leo Villareal leveraged digital technology and innovative software to develop and realize the design...

Three finalists present plans for major new bridge in Los Angeles:

The groups—headed by HNTB, AECOM, and Parsons Brinckerhoff— have all been shortlisted to create the city’s new Sixth Street Viaduct. Their vivid public presentations were the first glimpse of what will likely be LA’s next major icon.

The original 3,500-foot-long structure, a famous rounded Art Deco span designed in 1932, has been deemed unsalvageable due to irreversible decay, and in April the city’s Bureau of Engineering called for a competition to design a new, $400 million, cable stayed structure.

Following the city’s lead, all three teams presented plans that not only showcased memorable forms, but embraced people-friendly designs, including pedestrian paths, parks, and connections to the river below. The push reveals Los Angeles’s focus on attracting people and talent through increased livability. Such moves are a welcome, if uphill battle considering that so much of the city has been designed for cars, not people...

The answer to one of today's difficult planning problems may lie in the Middle Ages. In cities across the US, freeways cut through communities, creating urban dead zones. To heal that damage, Columbus, Ohio built an urbanized bridge, common in 12th & 17th century Europe.

 

In Medieval and Renaissance Europe, imaginative, multifunctional bridges known as "habitable bridges" were quite common. Some hosted markets. Others contained mills that harnessed the power of the river. Many housed defensive towers or featured chapels. Beyond the novelty of having buildings on a bridge, they were highly functional, as they became natural venues for commercial trade. Perhaps the most famous habitable bridge was London Bridge, which had buildings on it from 1209 until it was rebuilt in 1831. Other surviving habitable bridges include Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy; Ponte di Rialto in Venice; and Krämerbrücke in Erfurt, Germany...

The Ambitious Cykelslangen by DISSING+WEITLING enables Copenhagen's vision to become the best cycling city in the world by the end of 2015.

The 235-meter-long orange snake meanders 5.5 meters high above sea level from Havneholmen through the mall Fisketorvet, ending at Kalvebod Brygge. This “snake” is actually a ramp and a bridge, called the “Cykelslangen — The Bicycle Snake,” that provides more than 12,000 bicyclists with a safe route through this busy district every day.

The architecture firm DISSING+WEITLING was asked to design a ramp to replace a nearby staircase. Instead of just designing a simple ramp, they went a step further and designed a bridge. The result is a destination and focal point that can be seen for miles from the air and has also completely transformed the area for all who enjoy it.

When North Shore City Council engaged Beca Architects to design the Onepoto Footbridge on Auckland's North Shore, they wanted a functional structure for pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely, but at the same time offering a unique experience for users by incorporating architectural elements into the bridge to create interest, and to blend it into the surrounding landscape.
The underlying structural concept of the bridge is a conventional two span, pre-stressed concrete beam footbridge, disguised cleverly by integrating with the architectural cladding. Designed to simulate a breaking wave, it reflects the overall vision of the bridge to recreate a journey across the Onepoto stream.
Measures were taken to preserve the sensitive coastal environment, protect native trees and wildlife, and preserve the old historic bridge in both the design and during construction.

NEXT architects has won a competition to design a pedestrian bridge for Changsha, China, with plans for a wavy structure based on a Möbius strip.

The structure will comprise a sequence of undulating steel ribbons that combine to create a never-ending surface, with intersecting connections, based on the principal of the Möbius ringThe form is also intended to reference traditional Chinese crafts.

The bridge will create three different routes across the water, including one that reaches a height of 24 metres to offer views of the harbour, the city and the surrounding mountains. Lighting fixtures will highlight the profile of the structure after dark.

The design was developed by Heatherwick Studio after Transport for London awarded it to develop ideas for improving pedestrian links across the river.

"In this context we are excited to have been selected by TFL to explore the opportunity of a pedestrian river crossing. The idea is simple; to connect north and south London with a garden."

The new Melkweg Bridge in Purmerend (NL) connects the old and new parts of the city with a unique design that accomodates both pedestrians and cyclists.


Developed by Dutch studios NEXT Architects and Rietveld Landscape, the bridge crosses the Noordhollandsch Kanaal to connect the historic city centre with the growing Weidevenne district in the south-west and is the first stage in a masterplan for the canal and its periphery. It does so with a steeply arching upper level for pedestrians and a zig-zagging lower level for cyclists and wheelchairs. The massive arch reaches the height of 12m above water level and offers incredible views over the city, with a high lookout that is an attraction in itself, letting users fully experience the relationship between the new and historic center of Purmerend.

Designed for the [AMSTERDAM] Iconic Pedestrian Bridge Competition, the project offers more than just a possibility of crossing the Amstel river. Branching into several pedestrian trajectories, the bridge prioritizes on being an extension of the public space in front of the Hermitage Museum. In order to prolong the experience of water, the bridge comprises several routes to create a public promenade. The iconic nature of the project is seen by the design team as an emergent feature resulting from both the geometry of the bridge as well as the socially enabled functional potential.

'We see Amsterdam as a city of differences at a small scale which emphasize its local realm. Houseboats represent a specific way of living which could better highlight the local and embed a fruitful cultural echange between the visitors and Amsterdam’s way of living...'
