An innovative swing bridge over the River Hull has opened to the public, offering pedestrians the unique experience of riding on the bridge as it opens and closes to river traffic.

Located in Kingston, the bridge connects Hull’s Old Town Conservation Area to the undeveloped industrial landscape of the east bank. Designed as the first stage of a wider masterplan it will unlock the potential of the riverside to promote wider regeneration in the areas east of the city centre. Foster and Partners Proposes a New Thames Hub Airport for the City of London | green streets | Scoop.it
Foster and Partners have designed a new airport for the Isle of Grain in the Thames Estuary, which would alleviate air traffic from Heathrow Airport.


The proposal would take on 110 million passengers at a new location that would also cut down on noise and air traffic over the city. With location near water, the architects hope the Thames Hub Airport will provide an alternative to building a third runway at Heathrow Airport.


The architects’ plan also addresses issues related to global warming and rising sea waters—the design includes a flood protection plan and builds on the infrastructure of green transportation already in place.

While floating homes have been the norm in the Netherlands for many years, they're just starting to gain in popularity in the UK.


Houseboats are increasingly dotting the Thames in London, and waterborne developments are currently in the works for post-industrial areas of Glasgow and Liverpool. Now one company—SRT EcoBuild—is looking to establish a village of floating homes in the waterways of Leith, Edinburgh.

The proposed homes are to be powered largely by powered by solar, with heat provided by air-source heat pumps and will also utilize rainwater harvesting to help bring them close to self-sufficiency. To minimize impact on and disruption to the local environment, they will be constructed offsite.
