A streetscape that includes natural landscaping, bicycle lanes, wind powered lighting, storm water diversion for irrigation, drought-resistant native plants and innovative “smog-eating” concrete has earned Cermak road in Chicago the title of “greenest Street in America” according to the Chicago Department of Transport (CDOT).

Opened in October 2012, the first phase two mile stretch is part of the Blue Island/Cermak Sustainable Streetscape project which was introduced in 2009 with the aim of reducing overall energy usage by 42 percent.

What Makes a Great Urban Street? | The Shouting Hare

What Makes a Great Urban Street? | The Shouting Hare | green streets | Scoop.it

We recently had the opportunity to think about what makes a streetscape feel or be urban. As part of the exercise, several people from our office collected images of what they thought were landscape characteristics of a vibrant urban street and we started developing an ever evolving list: bold horticulture that stands up to the architecture, busy sidewalk in front of a skyscraper; density; not always clean and orderly; vibrant colors; places to spend money; illuminated wildly at night; trees; water; somewhere to watch people; shade; irregularity from one street/storefront to the next.

Urban Green Streets: City Gardens and Greenspace

Urban Green Streets: City Gardens and Greenspace | green streets | Scoop.it

City green space and city gardens are a way to create integration with nature in urban settings.

All cities were once expanses of trees and wildlife, and, sadly, they have been paved over with concrete. Joni Mitchell said it best – ‘They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.’ City residents are making a big effort to turn that around and bring nature back to the city and maybe slow down the hustle and bustle.
City street landscaping has generally been a line of trees along the curb, if there were any at all. Now, flower, herb and vegetable gardens are popping up along sidewalks to beautify neighborhoods...

Environmental factors could have a big influence on how often we get off our butts.

Published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, a new study examines how environmental factors—including crime rates, sidewalks, proximity to local businesses, and access to recreational facilities—change the way we walk, bike, and run.

Shifting the Suburban Paradigm

Shifting the Suburban Paradigm | green streets | Scoop.it
Transforming the single-family home by paying attention to what residents, and communities, really need.

How does it work on the street? In the neighborhood? How is it served by transit? Is it adaptable, allowing for the housing of extended families or the hosting of an entrepreneurial endeavor? Can the owner build an accessory dwelling to do so? (Most zoning, homeowners’ associations and CCRs don’t allow for it currently.) What needs to happen to zoning, to financing, to our very notions of resale value to change the suburban condition — and by extension, the American Dream as we know it?
