This winning proposal for Musée de la Romanité in Nimes, France, by Elizabeth de Portzamparc had to deal with a fragile situation which required respectful and exceptional urban dialogue.

Located on the gate of the old city of Nimes, and emerging from the archaeological remains, it had to establish a complex relationship with the two thousand years old antique Arenas of Nimes.


The museum building was only a part of wider project, including urban regeneration of the "Grill“ plot, the museography, the archaeological garden landscaping and a feasibility study of a congress center and a hotel.

Two geometries coexist successfully – in contrast with the magnificence of the static, great stone volume, the Museum’s offers light and luminous presence of one fluid architecture. Acting as a gate of an urban promenade, museum reveals the Arenas through its transparent ground floor, which attracts and invites visitors inside.

The building of the museum was designed to generate coherence in the city, the inventive museography within it and the archaeological garden that extends it...

In 1998, the Union Pacific railyard sat vacant in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Four years later, the 30-acre site was transformed into a mixed-use urban district with specialty stores, restaurants, offices and apartments. A children’s museum and planetarium offered cultural and learning opportunities. And the project’s open-air plaza served as a place for international celebration during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

The Gateway, a $375 million project, is the first phase of a 650-acre brownfield redevelopment plan. It employs nearly 6,000 people and serves as a downtown center for public gatherings, exhibitions and performances. Apartments and condominiums make The Gateway a 24-hour district.

America's "greenest street" provides a blueprint for sustainable urban development | green streets | Scoop.it

A streetscape that includes natural landscaping, bicycle lanes, wind powered lighting, storm water diversion for irrigation, drought-resistant native plants and innovative “smog-eating” concrete has earned Cermak road in Chicago the title of “greenest Street in America” according to the Chicago Department of Transport (CDOT).


Opened in October 2012, the first phase two mile stretch is part of the Blue Island/Cermak Sustainable Streetscape project which was introduced in 2009 with the aim of reducing overall energy usage by 42 percent.

A pilot project aims to pave the way for community-led reuses of L.A. streets.

The automobile is undoubtedly the dominant mode of travel in Los Angeles. But to write off the city as made up entirely of car-driving, bumper-to-bumper rush hour commuters is clearly an over-generalization. A growing group of Angelenos is finding ways to make transit, cycling, and walking (and, often, a combination thereof) relevant and viable in their daily lives.

A physical example of this transition opened this weekend in the city’s Silver Lake neighborhood. On a short strip of street bordering a small triangular park within a vibrant commercial area, officials from the city’s departments of planning, transportation, and public works partnered with the county’s public health department to close the street off to car traffic and convert it into an outdoor plaza. On 11,000 square-feet, the roadway has been effectively removed form the automobile grid with the simple application of paint (in glowing neon green polka-dots), bike racks and planters around the edges and seating in the middle. The project was inspired by similar street plazas created in New York City and San Francisco.
