Experts believe that a solar boom is both feasible and necessary in order to reign in warming to safe levels.

Earlier this year, the International Energy Agency published an alarming report predicting catastrophic global warming. Based on current trends, it said, we're set for a 6 degree Celsius temperature increase this century--a level scientists agree would make life untenable for much of the planet. International agreements have set a target of just 2 degrees C, because that's what scientists say would be a relatively safe outcome.

The IEA did offer positive news, though. It said that an aggressive move to energy efficiency and renewables could keep the world's temperature under 2 degrees, and that such a move need not cost much. In fact, $44 trillion in investment by 2050 would net $115 trillion in fuel savings, such is the wonder of energy efficiency and potential for energy storage...

The record-setting third quarter for U.S. solar energy installations brings the nation’s total to a whopping 10.25 gigawatts (GW).

That’s enough to make the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) predict that the U.S. could finally rise up the ranks to beat Germany in new solar photovoltaic (PV) installations next year. Included in that figure—the country’s second-best quarter—was the residential sector’s record of 186 megawatts (MW) in installations.

The National Center for Photovoltaics (NCPV), which is part of the U.S. National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), maintains a chart that shows efficiency records for all kinds of research solar technologies of all types (thin-film, single-junction cells, multi-junction cells, organic cells, quantum dot cells, etc). Above is the latest version as of April 2013.


On it, you can see the steady pace of progress and how different solar cell compositions compare to each other. Of course, these record-breaking cells were probably very expensive to manufacture and made only in very small quantities, so don't expect to see efficiency numbers like these in commercial PV... But over time, yesterday's record-breakers become today's mass-market products, so all this progress isn't just for the sake of breaking records either.

A new survey of experts shows solar power will become much cheaper through 2025, while expanding greatly, but for these trends to continue for the long term will require a commitment to funding research.
Prices for solar modules—the part of solar panels that produce electricity—will continue to fall, in line with the long-term trend since 1980, according to a survey of experts by Near Zero, a nonprofit energy research organization.
To get a sense of what future prices for solar power are likely to be, as well as other challenges and bottlenecks that the industry faces, Near Zero conducted a formal, quantitative survey from leaders in the industry, universities, and national labs, as a means of formally collecting expert judgments on a topic. By aggregating forecasts made independently by a variety of experts, these results reflect the collective wisdom of the group about how the solar power industry is most likely to develop, and also help to characterize the range of uncertainty about the future...

Solar is a great way to get yourself free from the power grid and take control of your own energy generation, while also helping to drastically lower your impact on the environment. Solar panels last a long time too, once you’ve installed them, they often provide reliable power for well over 20 years, silently generating electricity with little to no maintenance. Sounds great! So why are people slow to implement this fantastic technology?

The initial cost of solar is sometimes prohibitive for families, especially if their energy needs are high. This graphic uses over 45,000 results from their online solar cost estimation tool to show what you can expect, on average, in your state.
The graphic explores four points: how much solar costs in your state, what you could save every month, what you could save over time, how long your solar setup will take to pay for itself. Not surprisingly, sunny states like California tend to have some of the lowest prices on solar, while also providing some of the highest savings over time. However, that doesn’t mean northerns states can’t make financial sense: New York state provides such good incentives on solar purchases, you can actually pay off your system faster there than in California...

Since 2002, the U.S. has increased its installed solar photovolatic capacity by a factor of 200. Which cities are leading the way?

The U.S. now has more than 200 times the amount of installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity than it did in 2002, according to a new report from Environment America, and the top 20 cities for this capacity contain more solar power today than the amount installed for the total country six years ago. "Shining Cities: At the Forefront of America's Solar Energy Revolution" looks at which metropolises were in the lead of PV capacity in 2013, and what cities top the country when it comes to capacity per capita. The top cities may not necessarily be the locales you expect, but this data may highlight potential markets that are hot for building PV installations.

Have you ever wondered what the solar potential of your home is? Or where you work? Or the White House maybe?


A new interactive map commissioned by the District Department of the Environment and created by Mapdwell allows users to click on almost any building in the city and see "how much electricity can be produced on their rooftops from solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, how the financial investment will pay off, and how much pollution will be reduced." You can also see where solar systems are already installed and what the yearly financial benefit is.

The data used to create the map comes from the Army's Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar) system, aerial imagery from the D.C. Geographic Information System and building footprints from EarthData International, Inc. Mapdwell is "a collaborative effort by researchers, academics, and professionals at MIT."

The Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges 20 collegiate teams from around the world to design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive. 

The houses are built over a two year period on campuses across the world, and are then shipped to Irvine, California- the competition itself consists of 10 contests, one being on Energy Balance, measuring the net energy each house produces and consumes.

One of the most important aspect to this concept is the micro-grid solution — the connection between the houses and the local utility to provide excess solar energy to the grid.  Each team’s house is equipped with a bidirectional utility meter that enables power flow to and from the electrical utility and a net metering system to record energy consumption and PV energy production.

For the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, the numbers don’t lie – and they don’t fail to impress, either. In one of the U.S.’s sunniest regions, the sky is the limit for this solar power project.


The Ivanpah project, comprised of three separate plants to be built in phases, has begun construction on federal land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The project received a $1.6 billion loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Electricity from Ivanpah will be sold under multiple power-purchase agreements, each of 25-30 years duration with Southern California Edison and Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The electricity generated by all three plants is enough to support a yearly average of 140,000 homes, and more than twice that number when operating at maximum capacity during the peak hours of the day.

Ivanpah is the first large-scale solar thermal plant to be built in California in 20 years, supporting California’s goal of 33 percent renewable power generation by 2020.

Renewable energy enjoys broad support in the US where people expect the government to support emerging clean power technologies- Americans more concerned about the state of the economy than the threat of climate change: 41% of respondents ranked climate change in the lowest category as a threat facing the world and 51% ranked the economic recession in the highest category in the recent 2012 Global Consumer Wind Study.

When asked to what extent does the electric utility industry cause human-action induced climate changes, 32% of GCWS respondents answered to a certain degree and 39% answered to a high or very high degree.

The overwhelming majority (67%) of respondents said that they would prefer to have their electricity sources supplied by renewables, versus 9% for fossil fuels and 8% for nuclear.

78% of respondents said that they would prefer to see renewables such as wind, solar, hydro, biomass and geothermal developed over the next five years.

Solar power, which makes up a tiny part of Californias overall energy mix, will account for the biggest piece of the states renewable energy pie by the end of the decade, according to the states largest utilities.

Last year, Pacific Gas & Electric got most of its renewable energy from wind, bioenergy, geothermal and small hydropower dams. Solar accounted for about 1 percent. But that mix is quickly changing, and by 2020, the San Francisco-based utility expects solar to account for 40 percent of its renewable portfolio.
California's aggressive "Renewable Portfolio Standard" law requires utilities to purchase 33 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020. Bioenergy, geothermal, solar, wind, wave and tidal power and small hydroelectric dams -- which cause less harm to the environment than large hydro dams -- all count toward meeting the law...
But solar is the fastest-growing piece of renewable portfolios, driven by federal stimulus funding for large solar power plants, a drop in solar panel prices and a boom in the number of developers competing for long-term utility contracts in California...

No other energy source compares to the energy potential of solar. When looking at the images, note that circles for Coal, Uranium, Petroleum, and Natural Gas are TOTAL recoverable reserves whereas the renewable energy circles (including the giant solar energy one) are PER YEAR.
Bottom line: Solar energy is the most abundant energy source on the planet.
For a micro-scale example, the solar energy hitting the state of Texas each month is equal to the total amount of energy the Texas oil and gas industry has ever produced...
