A Graphic Showing the World's Vanishing Wildlife

A Graphic Showing the World's Vanishing Wildlife | green infographics | Scoop.it

The toll of human activity on the world's wildlife population over the past 40 years is devastating. The World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) recently released "2014 Living Planet Report"  shows that between 1970 and 2010, the population of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish around the globe has dropped a shocking 52 percent.

It's capital, the real capital, and it's disappearing #naturalcapital

LEONARDO WILD's curator insight, January 15, 2015 7:32 AM

When talking about "Global Warming" we think of the wrong processes—we take the median to be the issue, when in fact it's the weather extremes that cause the greatest havoc—yet still, "Climate Change" does not give the full picture, either. "Climate" refers to one meta-process, while "Change" is a word that many embrace as potentially positive. "Planetary Upheaval" may be a more generally accurate description of what we are facing.

4,700 Measures to Fight Climate Change

4,700 Measures to Fight Climate Change | green infographics | Scoop.it
That's the number of measures the world's 58 biggest cities have passed to fight climate change.

The world's 58 biggest cities have passed 4,700 measures to fight climate change, according to C40 Cities, a new website that launched today committed to "implementing meaningful and sustainable climate-related actions" across its network of the world's megacities. Another 1,500 action plans are under active consideration.

According to the site, 50 percent of the world's cities are already formally dealing with climate change. And 90 percent of all urban areas are coastal, putting them at increased risk for flooding. But, the site notes, cities are a major part of the problem too. Megacities produce 70 percent of the world's carbon dioxide.

The site also offers a host of case studies about fighting climate change and tips for reducing your carbon footprint. Read more about the project here. And check out the sharp interactive graphic that illustrates the myriad problems associated with climate change facing the world's cities...

NYC's Daily Carbon Footprint Visualized

NYC's Daily Carbon Footprint Visualized | green infographics | Scoop.it

With one of the best public transportations systems in the world, individual New Yorkers tend to have smaller carbon footprints than typical Suburbanites, but with a population of over 8.2 million, the carbon footprint for the city itself is pretty outrageous.

This visualization shows what it would look like if all of the carbon dioxide emitted from vehicles, buildings, factories, and people could be captured in “bubbles.” Each turquoise orb represents one ton of CO2, which would fill a sphere with a diameter of 33 feet, and as of now two are released every second in the Big Apple!
