The States And Cities That Lead (And Lag) In The Clean-Tech Economy

The States And Cities That Lead (And Lag) In The Clean-Tech Economy | green infographics | Scoop.it

When it comes to clean tech, America could do with some Californication. The state is beating everywhere else hands down, from public policy and capital invested to adoption of electric vehicles and smart meters.

A new ranking of clean-tech leadership from research firm Clean Edge gives the Golden State a score of 91.7 out of 100. The next highest ranked state, Massachusetts, comes in with a score of 77.8. Clean Edge’s state scores combine 70 indicators, while the metro scores look at 20 factors, including things like green buildings and levels of clean electricity.

Sustainable Energy Roadmaps | Worldwatch Institute

Sustainable Energy Roadmaps | Worldwatch Institute | green infographics | Scoop.it

Transitioning from a carbon-intensive economy to a low-carbon future presents challenges and opportunities for developing countries. The Sustainable Energy Roadmaps help countries successfully navigate the change to an infrastructure capable of meeting the energy challenges of the 21st century.

The approach examines a country’s potential for renewable energy production such as wind, solar, small hydropower and biomass. Existing energy infrastructure is analyzed to identify the potential for, and hurdles to, increased efficiency and energy storage. At the same time, current socio-economic and policy environments are factored into the analysis to identify barriers to low-carbon development and determine international best practices to suggest how they can be overcome. Equally important, funding options that might be available from private, public, and multilateral institutions to help bring renewable energy projects into being are assessed.

The project strengthens government and civil society capacity, enhances stakeholder engagement, and advances policies that combat climate change...

Renewable Energy + Clean Power in Europe [Infographic]

Renewable Energy + Clean Power in Europe [Infographic] | green infographics | Scoop.it

Germany has become more than just a leader in standard renewable energy uptake; it is making a play for commercial leadership and technological primacy in the increasingly competitive global renewable energy business.

Companies understand their customers want to see more renewable energy in action, and German regulators understand that they need to find ways to put more renewable energy, including wind power, onto the grid to replace planned coal and nuclear power plant retirements.

In the continental context, the EU is preparing to release its latest communication on an integrated energy market ahead of a goal of operational integration it has set for 2014.

ONE | INFOGRAPHIC: Closing the gender gap in land rights

ONE | INFOGRAPHIC: Closing the gender gap in land rights | green infographics | Scoop.it

Although women play an indispensable role in the rural economy, they face severe constraints in accessing the agricultural assets and services they need to maximize their production. It has become increasingly clear that there is a “gender gap” in resources such as land, technology, and extension services; that the gap imposes costs not only on women but also on the broader economy and society; and that closing the gap would improve agricultural productivity and reduce hunger and poverty. Oft-cited statistics from a recent FAO report focus on the gains that could be made if women had equal access to non-land resources. In light of evidence that secure rights to land for women can increase agricultural productivity and confer other household benefits, we at Landesa think it is critical to consider what additional gains could be made if women had equal access to one of the most important assets to agricultural households: land.

Why Some States Are More Economically Mobile Than Others

Why Some States Are More Economically Mobile Than Others | green infographics | Scoop.it
The impact of income, class, and religion.

Economic mobility - the quintessentially American idea (ideal, really) that any one, no matter how humble their origins, can become wealthy - has taken some terrible hits in the last few years. Writing in The New Republic, Timothy Noah notes that income heritability ("a measure of how determinative one generation’s relative income status - what we used to call ‘station in life’ - will be of the next generation’s relative income status') is much higher in the U.S. than in many of the countries that people once emigrated to America from, in search of greater opportunities. “Mobility in the United States has fallen dramatically behind mobility in other comparably developed democracies," he writes.
